How Do Stripe Recurring Payments Work? A Complete Merchant Guide

TL;DR:

  • Pick one Stripe collection method before you build: Billing subscriptions, recurring invoices, Payment Links, or charges on saved payment methods.
  • Budget for two kinds of cost, per-payment processing plus Billing, and fixed dispute fees that can make a lost dispute on a small renewal cost more than the renewal.
  • Smart Retries skip hard declines until the customer adds a new payment method, so set what happens after the last retry and when access is revoked.
  • Cancel, pause, and refund are separate actions, and Stripe cannot cancel on a customer’s behalf.
  • Match each renewal dispute to its billing period and allegation, and stop further billing on subscriptions that are disputed.

Stripe recurring payments are charges collected on a fixed schedule through Stripe Billing, which creates an invoice each period and, with automatic collection on, charges the customer’s saved payment method. Your business remains responsible for clear enrollment terms, service delivery, cancellation handling, and the accuracy of each charge.

How to Set Up Stripe Recurring Payments

To set up Stripe recurring payments, create a recurring price, attach a payment method to a customer, create the subscription, and connect webhooks so product access follows payment status.

Stripe offers four ways to charge on a schedule, and the one you pick decides how much you build yourself.

MethodeMeest geschikt voorBuild Effort
Subscriptions (Stripe Billing)Recurring prices with trials, upgrades, proration, and automatic invoicesNo code through the Dashboard or Payment Links, or the Subscriptions API with Checkout and Elements
Recurring invoicesCustomers invoiced on a schedule who pay by card or bank debitNo website needed, Stripe hosts the invoice and payment page
Payment LinksSelling a subscription by link over email, SMS, or social mediaNo code
Charges on saved payment methodsCustom schedules where you decide when and how much to chargeSome coding with the Payment Intents API, and you trigger each charge

Stripe Billing setup

Connect the price, customer, payment, and access workflow

  1. 1Create the recurring price

Set the amount, currency, and billing interval, or a usage-based price.

  2. 2Collect the payment method

Use Stripe Checkout or Stripe Elements so the payment method is collected securely and attached to the customer.

  3. 3Create the subscription

Stripe generates an invoice for each billing period and, with automatic collection on, charges the default payment method.

  4. 4Connect billing events

Most subscription activity happens asynchronously, so your integration needs events such as invoice.paid, invoice.payment_failed, invoice.payment_action_required (the customer must authenticate, for example with 3D Secure), and customer.subscription.deleted. See Stripe’s subscription webhook documentation.

  5. 5Provision access from paid state

After invoice.paid, confirm the subscription status is active before extending access, and revoke access when the status becomes canceled or unpaid.

  6. 6Handle failures and disputes

Enable Smart Retries, notify customers when a payment fails, and subscribe to charge.dispute.created and radar.early_fraud_warning.created so a disputed renewal does not go unnoticed.

Test the lifecycle with the chosen collection method. An active subscription and a paid invoice are separate signals; a payment that requires customer action must reach the customer.

Renewals charge a stored credential while the customer is absent, so keep the consent record described in our card-on-file transactions guide. For how subscriptions differ from installment arrangements, read our guide to recurring payments, and see the Stripe subscription lifecycle documentation for how subscription and invoice states interact.

Respond to invoice.created promptly: if Stripe does not receive a successful response, it delays finalizing automatic-collection invoices for up to 72 hours, which can push a renewal past the date your customer expects.

What Is a Stripe Charge on a Recurring Payment?

A Stripe charge is a single attempt to move money into your Stripe account. In a subscription, each attempt to collect an invoice creates a charge, so a renewal that fails and then succeeds on a retry produces a failed charge followed by a successful one.

On the cardholder’s statement, the line shows your statement descriptor. When it does not identify your business, the customer may see only “STRIPE.” Stripe is the processor, not the seller, so it cannot refund on your behalf. Use a recognizable billing descriptor so a renewal is not mistaken for an unknown charge.

Stripe Recurring Payments Fees

Stripe recurring payments carry two cost layers: card processing on every payment, and on Stripe Billing a percentage of Billing volume. The table lists Stripe’s published US rates. Your own rates can differ by region, payment method, product configuration, and negotiated terms, so confirm them on the current Stripe Billing pricing page and in your account before you model margins.

Stripe Failed Payments and Smart Retries

Stripe retries failed subscription and invoice payments automatically with Smart Retries, and the recommended default is 8 tries within 2 weeks. Some failures cannot be retried and need a new payment method.

Retry SettingWhat Stripe Does
Smart Retries windowChoose 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month, or 2 months. Per the Smart Retries documentation, Stripe uses AI to pick attempt times from signals such as how many devices recently presented the same payment method
Custom scheduleUp to three retries, each a set number of days after the previous attempt
Never retriedNo payment method on file or an India-issued card
Hard decline codesScheduled retries continue, but the payment executes only after the customer supplies a new payment method. Codes: incorrect_number, lost_card, pickup_card, stolen_card, revocation_of_authorization, revocation_of_all_authorizations, authentication_required, highest_risk_level, transaction_not_allowed
Lokale betaalmethodenOff by default. Once enabled, Stripe retries only insufficient-funds failures: ACH Direct Debit up to 2 times within 40 days, SEPA and Bacs Direct Debit up to 2 times within 30 days, Australia BECS Direct Debit up to 4 times within 30 days

Other declines, such as insufficient funds, stay in the schedule, so match customer messaging to the credit card decline codes you see. Stripe also updates stored card details automatically when a customer receives a new card number.

When the last retry fails, the subscription follows the failed-payment setting you chose:

Setting After the Final RetryResulting StatusAccess Guidance
Cancel the subscriptioncanceled, a terminal stateRevoke access
Mark the subscription unpaidunpaid, with invoices continuing as drafts and no payment attemptsRevoke access
Leave the subscription past duepast_due, with invoices continuing to generate and charge under your retry settingsNotify the customer and apply your own grace period
Pause the subscriptionpaused for eligible subscriptions, with no new invoices until it resumesFollow your pause terms

Unrecovered renewals become involuntary churn. Recurly’s July 2026 network data shows median annual involuntary churn of 1.38% for ecommerce and 1.06% for SaaS, falling from 1.30% at $10 to $25 average revenue per customer to 0.18% at $250 and above. Our guide to involuntary churn covers benchmarks and fixes, and smart dunning covers the notifications that should run alongside retries.

Stripe Adaptive Acceptance retries selected false declines in real time at authorization, a different mechanism from Smart Retries scheduling later attempts. If you are still choosing infrastructure, compare what each recurring payment service provider automates by default.

Cancel, Pause, or Refund a Stripe Subscription

Pausing collection, canceling a subscription, and refunding a payment are three different actions, and a cancellation refunds nothing unless you choose to. In the Dashboard you can select a prorated refund, a refund of the last payment in full, or no refund. Pausing collection leaves the subscription status unchanged, so Stripe recommends using the status, not the pause, as the trigger for starting or stopping service.

The Stripe cancellation documentation covers the options. By default, cancellation takes effect immediately and no further invoices are generated; you can also cancel at the end of the billing period, on a custom date, or after a set number of billing cycles through a subscription schedule.

Customers cannot cancel through Stripe. In Stripe’s guidance for customers, Stripe says it is not authorized to cancel subscriptions on a customer’s behalf, tells them to contact the business, and points them to their bank, which may open a dispute, if the business does not respond. Give subscribers a self-service route instead, such as the customer portal cancellation page, which is enabled by default and can collect a cancellation reason or offer a retention coupon.

A disputed subscription keeps billing by default, which can create more disputed charges. Under Manage disputed payments in your Billing settings you can cancel it immediately without prorating, or at the end of the period, for disputed card payments opened for the full amount.

Stripe’s dispute-prevention guidance for canceled subscriptions recommends an in-app cancellation button, clear billing terms the customer accepts with a click before you collect card details, a reminder before a trial ends, reminders about 7 days before a yearly renewal and 2 to 3 days before a monthly one, and a flexible refund policy.

Use the renewal prevention checklist to review cancellation handling, and the refund reconciliation workflow when credits overlap disputed charges. For the wider playbook, see our guides to subscription chargebacks and recurring billing chargebacks.

Respond to a Disputed Stripe Subscription Renewal

Read the case reason code, identify the disputed invoice and service period, and submit one complete evidence package before the deadline. For a cancellation claim, show the request and billing sequence. For nonreceipt, show entitlement or fulfillment. For an unauthorized payment, assess the payment and account facts rather than assuming prior usage proves consent.

Stripe notifies you by email, in the Dashboard, and through a charge.dispute.created event. Four limits shape the response:

Before submitting evidence

Check four response constraints

Meet the case deadline

You usually have 7 to 21 days depending on the card network, and missing it loses the dispute automatically. See chargeback time limits for the windows by network.

Submit one complete response

Stripe forwards your response to the issuer immediately, and you cannot edit it or add files afterward.

Attach concise files

Banks do not review links, audio, or video. The combined file limit is 4.5 MB, and Mastercard evidence is capped at 19 pages.

Allow for the issuer’s review

The issuer’s decision can take up to 3 months.

The deadline on the specific dispute controls your response. Prior paid invoices provide context, and the evidence must answer the disputed renewal and its actual claim. Source: Stripe dispute response documentation.

Intentional friendly fraud is one possible pattern, but failed cancellation, unclear billing, and account compromise need different responses.

Renewal disputes can contribute to network monitoring. Visa VAMP uses the sum of the TC40 fraud count and TC15 dispute count, divided by the count of settled TC05 card-not-present VisaNet payments in the same month. In Asia Pacific, Canada, the EU and the U.S., the standard Excessive Merchant test from April 1, 2026 requires both a ratio of at least 1.5% and at least 1,500 monthly fraud-and-dispute reports, when the acquirer is not Above Standard or Excessive. Other regional and acquirer conditions differ. Applicable pre-dispute resolutions and qualifying CE3.0 TC40 records can be excluded depending on extract timing; a single payment can appear in both reports. Mastercard ECM instead uses current-month chargebacks divided by the previous month's captured payments: 100–299 chargebacks and a 1.5%–2.99% ratio, with no fine in the first program month and fines starting in month two. A ratio alone does not establish enrollment, fines or account closure, and being below the standard merchant thresholds does not guarantee freedom from processor or acquirer review. Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program and Excessive Chargeback Program cover the operational background; card testing is monitored separately. Confirm the applicable notice and Visa's fact sheet before estimating an alert or refund's effect on reporting.

Stripe’s own guidance lists Ethoca and Verifi alerts among ways to stop disputes on canceled subscriptions, because an alert lets you refund before the chargeback is filed. Read how chargeback alerts work; Chargeflow Alerts connects to Visa’s Verifi RDR and Mastercard’s Ethoca networks.

Use the Stripe evidence checklist to prepare records. Prior paid invoices give context but do not guarantee an outcome.

Automate Stripe Disputes With Chargeflow

You can connect Chargeflow to Stripe to handle disputes that still reach you. Chargeflow Automation builds and submits evidence for each dispute and charges 25% of each recovered chargeback, backed by a 4x ROI guarantee. Confirm account coverage and exception handling before relying on automation. For subscription products that ship physical goods, Chargeflow Prevent screens each new order after checkout and before fulfillment, which is where a stolen-card signup can be stopped before the first shipment.

Judge the result on net recovered funds after recovery fees, compared with the cost of manual versus automated chargeback processing, across comparable billing periods. A higher win rate from answering only the easy cases does not mean better total recovery.

Veelgestelde vragen

Can Stripe process recurring payments automatically?

Yes. Stripe Billing supports automatic recurring collection within a configured subscription workflow. The payment outcome still depends on the payment method, customer action where needed, and the subscription’s actual state.

How much does Stripe charge for recurring payments?

On published US pricing, card payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents and Stripe Billing adds 0.7% of Billing volume on the pay-as-you-go plan, so a $20 monthly renewal costs about $1.02 in Stripe fees. ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8%, capped at $5. Confirm your own rates in your Stripe account, because region, payment method, and negotiated terms change the total.

Does Stripe retry failed recurring payments?

Yes. Smart Retries reattempt failed subscription and invoice payments, and the recommended default is 8 tries within 2 weeks. Stripe does not execute a retry after a hard decline code until the customer supplies a new payment method.

How do you stop recurring payments in Stripe?

A business cancels the subscription in the Dashboard or through the API, immediately, at the end of the period, or on a custom date. A customer has to contact the business or use its customer portal, because Stripe cannot cancel subscriptions on a customer’s behalf. If the business does not respond, the customer’s bank may open a dispute.

Does canceling a Stripe subscription refund its payments?

No, not unless you choose to. When you cancel in the Dashboard you select a prorated refund, a refund of the last payment in full, or no refund. Review the effective date, invoice treatment, and refund settings, then confirm what completed for the customer.

What does a Stripe charge on a bank statement mean?

It means the cardholder paid a business that uses Stripe to process payments. Stripe is the processor, not the seller, so it cannot refund or cancel on the business’s behalf. A customer who does not recognize the charge should contact the business first, and a clear statement descriptor helps customers recognize a renewal and reduces unrecognized-charge disputes.
