Shopify Recurring Payments: Protect MRR From Failed Payments and Chargebacks

TL;DR:

  • Shopify subscriptions run on the free Shopify Subscriptions app or a third-party app, and the store needs Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, or Stripe as its gateway.
  • Set retry attempts, the days between them, and a skip, pause, or cancel fallback separately for payment failures and inventory shortages.
  • A disputed renewal is won with the cancelation policy the customer accepted, renewal notices, usage logs, and cancelation history, not with the current storefront.
  • Count only billed orders as recurring revenue, because the app's active subscriptions figure includes paused contracts and skipped orders.

Shopify recurring payments are auto-billed subscription charges that renew on a set schedule through the Shopify Subscriptions app or a compatible third-party subscription app, using a card or wallet the customer saved at checkout. In the Shopify Subscriptions app, each renewal is billed the day after it falls due, at 10:00 am in the store's local time.

A failed billing attempt is a collection problem, while a disputed successful payment is a chargeback. Each needs its own owner, customer message, and metric, and both depend on one consistent record of the subscription contract, the order it generated, the payment outcome, and what was delivered.

Choose a Supported Subscription Setup

Merchants using Shopify can sell subscriptions with the free Shopify Subscriptions app or a third-party app such as Recharge, Skio, or Bold. Subscription products sell only on the online store, Shopify POS, Shop, and custom storefront channels. Review the official subscription setup requirements for payment, product, and app compatibility before implementation.

Define the product, cadence, discount terms, and customer controls before launch, because a replenishment box, a membership, and a digital service each need different fulfillment handling.

Check Gateway Support Before You Build

The Shopify Subscriptions app works with five payment gateways, and availability depends on your region and the gateway's terms. The eligibility considerations list the limits for each one, so settle the gateway before you design the plan.

GatewayWallets and MethodsLimits
Shopify BetalingenShop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal accelerated checkouts; some stores accept only Shop PayApple Pay is limited to Visa and Mastercard. Saved cards update automatically through the card networks.
PayPal ExpressPayPal gateway and PayPal as a walletThird-party transaction fees apply if Shopify Payments is not activated on the store.
Authorize.netPayPal is the only walletGoogle Pay and Apple Pay are not supported.
AdyenOnly payment methods that support recurring billing in your Adyen configurationThe Adyen payment app is limited to organizations with existing Adyen approval.
StripeMay be offered as a wallet option when a store cannot use Shopify PaymentsAvailable only to select merchants.
Every gatewayCards and supported wallets only; local, manual, and non-card methods may be unavailableNo draft orders or bundles. Gift cards and Shopify Scripts discounts apply to the first payment only, while automatic discounts apply to every order. The theme must support sections and blocks.

The Shopify Subscriptions app is listed as free in the Shopify App Store, so your costs come from the gateway and from any third-party app plan. For Stripe-side billing and retry tools outside Shopify's subscription contracts, see Stripe recurring payments.

Preserve Enrollment Terms and Every Material Change

Save the offer and the customer's acceptance with the original order, and keep an audit trail of every change to product, quantity, price, cadence, and address. The current storefront does not show what the customer agreed to before a disputed renewal.

Shopify creates a purchase options cancelation policy automatically when subscriptions are enabled, and customers must agree to it at checkout. Keep the wording that was live on each order date, because that is what you cite when a customer says they did not know the plan renewed.

Record the effective date of every skip, pause, or cancelation and its effect on any order already created. In the Shopify Subscriptions app, a skipped order shows a Skipped badge, a pause stops charges and upcoming orders immediately, and a cancelation ends billing and delivery immediately and cannot be undone. Read recurring payments for the distinction between payment schedules and the underlying customer commitment.

The contract-management documentation describes changes, skips, pauses, and cancelation. Confirm behavior for the specific app you use, because a third-party app may expose different controls.

Keep Customer Management Clear and Accessible

Shopify Subscriptions emails customers 3 days before each renewal is charged, which gives them time to skip, update payment details, pause, or cancel. Third-party apps follow their own notification schedule, so check what yours sends. The Shopify Subscriptions customer-experience guide explains the customer-facing flow; test that customers can reach each control from your receipts and account pages.

Send a recognizable receipt that names the plan, confirm every pause or cancelation with its effective date, and link support-assisted requests to the subscription contract.

Use the subscription renewal checklist to review the journey end to end. Support should not assure a customer that billing stopped unless the relevant contract and collection state confirm it.

Treat Inventory and Payment Failures Separately

A renewal fails for one of two reasons: the payment was declined, or the order could not be created, usually for lack of stock. Identify which one before you message the customer, because inventory shortages and substitutions need different communication from a declined card.

In the Shopify Subscriptions app, open Apps > Subscriptions > Settings and find Billing attempts. For both Payment method failure and Not enough inventory, you set the number of retry attempts, the days between attempts, and what happens when retries run out: skip the order, pause the subscription, or cancel it. Shopify notifies the customer in each case.

A contract that lacks the stock to create an order shows a caution icon. Create order oversells the product, while Bill contract makes another billing attempt after you restock. Decide which route is acceptable before a launch or limited drop, and avoid promising a shipment your operation cannot fulfill.

For physical products, use the fulfillment operations guide to preserve item and parcel records. For digital products, use the digital goods evidence guide to distinguish entitlement creation from actual usage.

A declined renewal has its own recovery path. Read the credit card decline code before retrying, and run a smart dunning sequence for the declines that can still collect. Shopify Payments updates saved cards automatically through the card networks, with wide support in the United States and varying support elsewhere. On other gateways, customers may need to update payment details themselves, so confirm with your gateway what it receives. Because every renewal reuses a stored credential, review the rules for card-on-file transactions too.

Renewals lost to failed payments are involuntary churn, not customers choosing to leave, and they recover on a different timeline than a dispute. Recurly's July 2026 network data puts involuntary churn at a 1.38% annual median for ecommerce, and shows it falling from a 1.30% annual median at $10 to $25 average revenue per customer, the highest of any band, to 0.18% at $250 and above. Merchants running subscriptions outside a Shopify app should check what their recurring payment service provider already handles.

Resolve Disputed Renewals With Claim-Specific Records

Shopify sorts disputes into seven categories, and subscription canceled is one of them (the full response workflow is in Shopify chargebacks). With Shopify Payments, order details, fulfillment and tracking data, refunds, the customer's undisputed order history, and your subscription policy are added to the response automatically, and the response is submitted on the due date even if you add nothing. You usually have 7 to 21 days to respond, the card company can take up to 75 days to decide, and the decision is final with no appeal. See chargeback time limits for the card network windows behind those dates. Read the dispute reason code first and match it to the renewal order, payment, and service period before you gather anything.

If your store is enrolled in a network dispute resolution program, eligible disputes are refunded automatically before they become chargebacks, with no evidence window, so your renewal records matter earlier, at the cancelation and billing-notice stage. Your NDRP-inclusive chargeback rate counts those disputes and drives Shopify Payments account standing and reserve thresholds, and winning a dispute does not remove it from the rate. Card networks run their own monitoring programs as well, covered in chargeback thresholds.

A billing descriptor that customers recognize on their statement keeps renewals from being disputed as unfamiliar charges. This guide covers the Shopify mechanics, while subscription chargebacks and recurring billing chargebacks cover platform-neutral recovery and prevention.

Investigate genuine billing errors and account compromise before labeling a case as intentional friendly fraud, because earlier successful orders and active usage give context but do not on their own prove a later charge was valid. Build a concise chronology of the accepted plan, the relevant change, the disputed payment, and the supporting records; the evidence standardization workflow keeps templates consistent across subscription and one-time purchases.

Reconcile Credits and Measure Retained Revenue

Canceling future orders, refunding a past payment, and ending access or fulfillment are separate actions, so confirm each one. If a refund overlaps with a dispute, use the refund reconciliation guide before issuing another credit.

Track successful renewals, recovered failed payments, inventory exceptions, cancelation errors, refunds, and chargebacks as separate lines, and compare net recovered funds after fees rather than win rate alone.

The Performance view in the Shopify Subscriptions app shows subscriptions revenue and the number of new, active, and canceled subscriptions. Its active count includes paused contracts and skipped orders, so reconcile it against billed orders before you report monthly recurring revenue.

Chargeflow has a direct integration with Shopify and Shopify Payments, and each product covers a different stage. Chargeback alerts from the card networks arrive before a dispute becomes a chargeback, and Chargeflow Alerts responds to them. Chargeflow Prevent scans orders after checkout and before fulfillment, and Chargeflow Automation builds and submits evidence for the chargebacks that still arrive. Confirm which app, payment account, and evidence sources your setup covers, and set a route for missing subscription data rather than assuming every contract record is available.

Veelgestelde vragen

Can Shopify accept recurring subscription payments?

Yes. Shopify supports auto-billed subscriptions that renew weekly, monthly, or yearly through the Shopify Subscriptions app or a compatible third-party app, and the store needs a supported payment gateway. Review the requirements for the product, payment method, and subscription app before launch.

Which payment gateways support Shopify subscriptions?

The Shopify Subscriptions app works with Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, and Stripe, depending on your region and the gateway's terms. Stripe is available only to select merchants, and the Adyen payment app requires existing Adyen approval.

What happens when a Shopify subscription renewal fails?

Shopify retries according to the Billing attempts settings in the Shopify Subscriptions app: the number of attempts, the days between them, and a final action of skip, pause, or cancel, with a notification to the customer. Payment failures and inventory shortages are configured separately. A failed attempt is a collection problem, not a chargeback, because a chargeback disputes a payment that was already taken.

How do I stop recurring payments on Shopify?

Skipping removes one upcoming order, pausing stops charges until the subscription is resumed, and canceling ends billing and delivery permanently. For a customer subscription, the customer can pause or cancel it from their customer account, and a merchant can do the same from Apps > Subscriptions; a cancelation cannot be undone. Recurring vendor payments set up through Shopify Bill Pay are canceled under Finance > Bill Pay, but only before the payment starts processing. Your own Shopify bill is reviewed under Settings > Billing.

How much is the Shopify chargeback fee on a disputed renewal?

With Shopify Payments the fee is $15 in the United States and varies by country, for example £10 in the United Kingdom and €15 in most euro countries. It is withdrawn when the chargeback opens and, per Shopify's help center, returned if you win. See the Shopify chargeback fee guide for ways to reduce how often it applies.

Is the Shopify Subscriptions app free?

The Shopify App Store lists Shopify Subscriptions as free. Your costs depend on the gateway, for example PayPal Express adds third-party transaction fees when Shopify Payments is not activated, and third-party subscription apps set their own plans.

What is a Shopify recurring charge?

For a store, a recurring charge is a renewal billed under a customer's subscription contract, and that is the payment a customer can dispute. In Shopify's developer documentation, a recurring application charge is how an app bills the merchant for the app itself, which is a separate relationship.
