TL;DR:
- Two setup paths: recurring invoice series (daily to yearly) and item subscription plans (weekly to annually), both built in the Square Dashboard.
- Card on file cost: automatic charges run 3.5% + 15¢, which beats the 2.9% + 30¢ online rate only on charges under $25.
- Failed payments: Square does not automatically retry declined recurring invoice payments, so you need your own follow-up process.
- Disputes: you have 7 days to answer a Square dispute, and renewals map to Visa 13.2 and Mastercard 4841.
- Chargeflow: the Square integration syncs disputes through the Disputes API, and Automation charges 25% only on recovered chargebacks.
Square recurring payments are scheduled charges you create in the Square Dashboard, either as a recurring invoice series or as an item subscription plan, so customers are billed on a fixed cadence without a manual re-bill. Recurring invoices run daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, and subscription plans run weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually.
This guide covers both setup paths step by step, what Square charges for automatic card on file billing, what happens when a renewal declines, and how to handle the disputes that recurring billing produces. For the wider model behind these charges, see our guide to recurring payments.
What Are Square Recurring Payments and How Do They Work?
Square offers three ways to bill on a schedule. Recurring invoices send the same invoice on a cadence and charge a card on file automatically when the customer has one saved; otherwise the customer pays each invoice online. Subscription plans attach a billing cadence to catalog items and charge the customer's saved card each cycle. The Subscriptions API gives developers the same plan model for a custom checkout.
| Methode | Cadence options | How the customer pays | Pause or stop | Failed payments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recurring invoice series | Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly | Pays each invoice online, or a card on file is charged automatically | Edit (future invoices only) or end the series; no pause option listed | Square does not automatically retry declined payments |
| Item subscription plan | Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, annually | Subscribes through Square Online, a link, a QR code or a checkout button; card is saved | Pause (indefinitely or by billing cycle), resume or cancel | No retry schedule is published in Square's help center |
| Subscriptions API | Defined in plan variations | Card on file required; ACH is not supported | Pause, resume or cancel through the API; cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle | You detect failures through the payment.updated webhook |
Choose invoices when the customer should see an itemized bill each cycle, as with retainers, agencies and B2B accounts. Choose subscription plans for product or membership billing with no invoice step. Use the API only when you need a custom checkout. Square documents the invoice path in its recurring invoice guide and the plan path in its subscription plan guide.
How Do You Set Up Recurring Invoices in Square?
A recurring invoice series takes a few minutes to build in the Dashboard. You create one invoice, set the schedule, and Square sends every later invoice on its own.
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Orders & payments (it may appear as Invoices & Payments or Payments) > Invoices > Recurring series.
- Click Create recurring series and select a template if you use one.
- Choose an existing customer or add a new one with name, phone and email.
- Add the title, an optional custom invoice ID and message, then the line items and amounts.
- Under Recurring schedule, set the frequency, start date, end date and due date.
- Choose Preview, Save as Draft or Send (the button reads Schedule for a future start date).
You can also start a series from the Square Point of Sale app: More > Invoices > Create Invoice > Make This Invoice Recurring. In the Dashboard, open the series menu to edit it, end it or view it. Edits apply to future invoices only, and ending a series stops future sends while invoices already sent stay payable. If a customer's card is already on file, Square charges it automatically; otherwise the customer pays each invoice online.
How Do You Create Square Subscription Plans for Automatic Billing?
Square subscription plans charge a customer's saved card on a recurring schedule with no invoice step, which makes them the better fit for product subscriptions and memberships.
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Items & services > Subscription plans, then click Create plan.
- Enter a plan name (only you see it) and click Assign items to pick items from your catalog.
- Click Add frequency option and choose when billing starts: at subscription start, on the last day of the month, or on a custom date. Set partial billing to Prorate or Charge full price.
- Set the subscription endpoint to continuous or after a set number of billing cycles.
- Add a discount if you want one, and enable pause if customers should be able to pause.
- Click Save. Customers subscribe through your Square Online store, a shared link, a QR code or an embedded checkout button.
You manage subscribers under Orders & payments > Subscriptions. Customers receive a manage subscription link by email to update their payment method, pause, resume or cancel. As the seller you can pause indefinitely or by billing cycle, and resume immediately or on the next billing date. Square states there are no monthly fees or fixed costs for Subscriptions.
Plan around these documented limits before you launch:
- You cannot change a plan's price after it is created, so a price change means a new plan.
- You cannot swap items on an active subscription.
- Pickup fulfillment is not available for subscriptions, and there are no commitment periods.
- Subscription management is not available on Android devices.
- For custom builds, the Subscriptions API needs a card on file, has a $1 minimum charge and does not support ACH because bank accounts cannot be stored for later charging.
What Does Square Charge for Recurring Payments?
Square does not add a separate recurring fee. You pay card processing on each cycle, and the rate depends on how the charge is made.
| Payment path | Square rate | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Card payment on an invoice or online | 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium; 3.3% + 30¢ on Free | The customer pays the invoice online |
| Card on file charged automatically | 3.5% + 15¢ | Applies to automatic recurring invoice charges on all plans |
| ACH bank transfer on an invoice | 1%, $1 minimum | A $10 cap applies on higher plans |
| Sending invoices | Gratis | Fees apply only when the customer pays |
| Subscription plans | No monthly or fixed fee | Card processing fees apply; confirm your rate in the Dashboard |
The automatic charge is not always the cheapest path. On the 2.9% + 30¢ online rate, a $50 invoice costs $1.75 to collect online and $1.90 as a card on file charge. A $500 invoice costs $14.80 online and $17.65 on file. The two rates break even at $25, so card on file billing only wins on charges below that. On the Free plan's 3.3% + 30¢ online rate the break-even moves to $75. These figures are calculated from the rates in Square's recurring payments how-to and pricing page, so recheck them before you quote them, since Square revises its fees.
What Happens When a Square Recurring Payment Fails?
A declined renewal is the most common way a recurring payment stops, and Square leaves more of the recovery to you than most merchants expect. Square's invoice guide states that it will not automatically attempt to re-process declined payments, and its help center does not publish a retry schedule for failed subscription charges. Treat the follow-up as your own process.
Square's card on file decline guidance gives the working rules:
| Signal | What Square recommends |
|---|---|
| Any retry | Wait at least 24 hours, and limit attempts to 2 or 3 over several days. Immediate retries can trigger fraud alerts or more declines. |
| INSUFFICIENT_FUNDS | Retrying after several days may work. |
| GENERIC_DECLINE | Do not retry. Ask the customer to contact their card issuer. |
| Closed account issuer alert | A strong signal that future charges will fail. Request a new payment method. |
| HSA/FSA and prepaid cards | These decline more often as funds run down, so flag them for earlier outreach. |
Developers can subscribe to Square's card.automatically_updated webhook to learn about expired or closed cards before a charge fails. For the full decline-reason map, see credit card decline codes, and for retry timing and customer notices, see dunning management. A renewal that is never recovered becomes involuntary churn.
Recurring Payments and Chargeback Risk on Square
Recurring billing produces disputes because every renewal is a separate charge a customer can forget, not recognize or want to cancel. Mastercard projects global chargeback costs reaching $42 billion by 2028, with nearly half reported as fraudulent. A subscriber who does not recognize a renewal often files a chargeback instead of asking for a refund, and each disputed renewal counts on its own.
Disputes over renewals usually land in two reason codes: Visa reason code 13.2 (cancelled recurring transaction) and Mastercard reason code 4841 (canceled recurring or digital goods transactions). Customers who simply forgot the subscription show up as friendly fraud, and a recognizable billing descriptor on each charge reduces those claims.
When a customer disputes a Square charge, Square notifies you by email, in the Dashboard and in the app, and places a hold on the disputed funds right away. You have 7 days to submit your response, and the bank can take up to 90 days to decide a challenged dispute. Square states it charges no fee for its dispute management service. The steps are in Square's dispute walkthrough. Card networks also cap how long after a charge a dispute can be filed, covered in chargeback time limits, so a forgotten renewal can still come back months later.
Stacked renewal disputes push your ratio toward Visa's Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) Excessive level of 1.5%, effective April 2026, and toward Mastercard's Excessive Chargeback Merchant range of 1.5% to 2.99% with 100 or more chargebacks. See Mastercard chargeback monitoring programs for how to stay out of that range. Platform-agnostic detail on this pattern is in recurring billing chargebacks and subscription chargebacks.
What Evidence Defends a Disputed Square Renewal?
Winning a renewal dispute depends on records you create at signup, not at dispute time. Keep these for every recurring customer:
- Proof of consent: the timestamped checkbox, signed invoice or accepted terms showing the customer agreed to recurring billing and to save the card.
- The terms shown: amount, cadence, renewal date, trial end date and how to cancel.
- Payment trail per cycle: Square's paid-invoice emails and receipts for each charge.
- Proof of service or usage: delivery confirmation or account activity for the period billed.
- Cancellation history: a record that no cancellation request came before the charge, or the refund you issued after one.
Consent is also a legal requirement. The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA) requires clear disclosure of material terms before you collect billing information, express informed consent, and a simple way to stop recurring charges. The Eighth Circuit vacated the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule in July 2025 and the FTC restarted rulemaking in 2026, but ROSCA enforcement continues. State automatic renewal laws add their own notice and cancellation rules, so check the states you sell into. Square's own developer rules say to ask permission before saving a card, for example with a checkbox in the purchase flow, and Square can disable applications that link cards without it. Our guide to card on file transactions covers the network rules behind stored credentials.
How Does Chargeflow Protect Square Recurring Revenue?
Chargeflow connects to Square through Chargeflow's Square integration. You authorize your Square account once, and disputes sync through Square's Disputes API the moment Square notifies you, with deadline tracking so the 7-day window does not lapse.
- Chargeflow Automation builds the evidence package, formats it to Compelling Evidence 3.0 for qualifying Visa cases and submits it. Pricing is 25% of each recovered chargeback, backed by a 4X ROI guarantee and up to 80% higher win rates.
- Chargeflow Alerts use Verifi RDR, Ethoca and the Chargeflow Network to refund flagged transactions within 24 hours and deflect up to 90% of chargebacks. See how chargeback alerts work before you enroll.
- Chargeflow Prevent scans orders after checkout and before fulfillment, trained on a network of 20,000+ merchants with a false positive rate under 0.1%, so a fraudulent first order is caught before the service starts.
- Chargeflow Insights is a free dashboard for tracking your dispute ratio.
When Does Square's Built-In Billing Fall Short?
Square is a solid fit for small and mid-sized recurring revenue, but the limits above add up: no repricing on a plan, no item swaps, no automatic invoice retries and no published subscription retry schedule. If you need retry logic, proration rules or usage-based billing, compare a dedicated recurring payment service provider. If you also sell through other platforms, see how Shopify recurring payments, Stripe recurring payments and Venmo recurring payments compare.
Veelgestelde vragen
Does Square offer recurring payments and subscriptions?
Yes. Square offers recurring payments through recurring invoice series (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly) and item subscription plans (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually), both managed in the Square Dashboard. Square states there are no monthly fees or fixed costs for Subscriptions, and you pay card processing fees on each charge.
How do I set up auto-renewal recurring payments on Square?
For invoices, go to Orders & payments > Invoices > Recurring series and click Create recurring series. For subscriptions, go to Items & services > Subscription plans and click Create plan. Set the amount, frequency, start date and end date, then send or save. A card on file is charged automatically; otherwise the customer pays each invoice online.
Can I pause or cancel a Square recurring payment?
Yes. For a recurring invoice series, open the series menu and choose End recurring series, which stops future invoices while invoices already sent stay payable; Square lists no pause option for invoice series. For a subscription, pause (indefinitely or by billing cycle), resume or cancel it from Orders & payments > Subscriptions, or the customer can do it from the manage subscription link in their email.
How much does Square charge for recurring payments?
Square charges standard processing fees with no extra recurring fee. Online and invoice card payments are 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium and 3.3% + 30¢ on Free, and automatic card on file charges are 3.5% + 15¢. ACH on an invoice is 1% with a $1 minimum. Check Square's pricing page, since rates change.
What happens if a Square recurring payment fails?
Square does not automatically retry declined recurring invoice payments, and its help center publishes no retry schedule for subscription charges. Square's developer guidance is to wait at least 24 hours, try no more than 2 or 3 times over several days, and ask for a new payment method if charges keep failing.
What is the downside of using Square for recurring payments?
The main limits are no automatic retries on declined invoices, no price change on an existing subscription plan, no item swaps on active subscriptions, no commitment periods and no ACH through the Subscriptions API. Merchants who need retry logic or usage-based billing often add a dedicated billing platform.
How do I protect Square recurring payments from chargebacks?
Keep consent and terms records for every subscriber, use a recognizable billing descriptor, and answer disputes within Square's 7-day window. Chargeflow's Square integration syncs disputes automatically, and Chargeflow Alerts deflect up to 90% of chargebacks before they post.
