TL;DR:

  • Cardholders dispute posted charges in the Bank of America app or Online Banking. Bank of America states most credit card transactions must be disputed within 60 days of the statement date showing the error.
  • That 60 day period is the customer's. Merchants follow the deadline on their provider's case notice.
  • Track the customer credit, merchant debit, submitted evidence and final outcome as separate events.
  • Match evidence to the claim: authorization, delivery, product, billing or refund.

A Bank of America cardholder disputes a charge through the bank, and the merchant answers the resulting chargeback through its own acquirer or payment provider, which is not necessarily Bank of America. This page covers both sides in separate sections. Last checked: 2026-10-05.

How to Dispute a Bank of America Transaction (Cardholder)

Steps below follow Bank of America: how to dispute a charge and apply to credit card billing inquiries.

  1. Contact the merchant first if you can. Bank of America notes this often resolves the issue faster, and the merchant's contact details are usually on your receipt or statement.
  2. In the mobile app, log in, select the account, select the transaction, tap Dispute Transaction and follow the instructions.
  3. In Online Banking on a computer, select the account and transaction, then select Dispute this transaction.
  4. Phone and mail are also available for credit card billing inquiries.

Per the Bank of America credit card dispute FAQ, only posted transactions can be disputed, because pending charges are temporary and may change. Bank of America says claims stay viewable in its site and app for up to 120 days after a claim is closed.

How Long Do You Have to Dispute a Bank of America Charge?

Bank of America states: "Most transactions must be disputed within 60 days of the date of your statement on which the error appeared." That is the customer reporting period for credit card disputes. It does not give a merchant 60 days to respond, and it should not be applied to every account type. See the chargeback time limit guide for network windows.

For debit-card claims, different consumer error-resolution rules may apply. Do not treat a credit card FAQ as the rule for every Bank of America account.

Cardholder vs Merchant: Who Does What

AspectKaarthouderHandelaar
RouteBank of America app, Online Banking, phone or mailThe acquirer or payment provider that processed the payment
Deadline sourceBank of America's customer reporting periodThe due date on the case notice from the provider
Records to gatherReceipts, messages with the merchant, charge detailsOrder, fulfillment, communication and refund records mapped to the claim

Not every merchant accepts payments through Bank of America. A Bank of America-issued card can be used at a merchant whose processor is a different company. For a comparison, see Chase disputes and chargebacks, and for the definition and flow, what is a chargeback.

Merchants: Track Credits, Debits and Outcome Separately

A cardholder's account investigation and your merchant balance are connected but are separate ledgers. Use this status map and read the actual notices and account entries for your case.

EvenementWat dit betekentWat te doen
Customer creditThe cardholder's account may show a temporary creditDo not treat it as a final decision on your case
Merchant debitYour balance may be adjusted at a stage set by your providerNote the amount, date and reference
Submitted evidenceYour response is with the reviewerKeep proof of submission and the chronology
Final outcomeThe decision and any return of fundsReconcile principal, credits and fees

Results and deadlines are not guaranteed. A provisional credit does not establish a final loss, and extensions depend on your provider. If a refund was already completed, include its reference. If the customer asks for another reimbursement during an open case, check your provider's instructions first, because refunds and chargebacks can overlap.

Use authorization evidence for authorization claims and fulfillment evidence for nonreceipt. See product-description claims and billing errors for the other types. Write a short chronology, label attachments and use standard evidence categories. A fraud-specific evidence program does not automatically apply to delivery or billing complaints, so ask your provider about eligibility. The full process is in chargeback management.

Close the Case With an Operational Finding

Record the recovered amount and fees, then identify the cause: descriptor confusion, a delayed shipment and a failed cancellation need different fixes. Merchants can use Chargeflow's automated chargeback recovery to organize supported responses.

Log in to the mobile app or Online Banking, select the account and the posted transaction, then choose Dispute Transaction and follow the instructions. Phone and mail are also available, and Bank of America suggests contacting the merchant first.

How long do I have to dispute a Bank of America credit card charge?

Bank of America states most transactions must be disputed within 60 days of the statement date on which the error appeared.

Does provisional credit mean the dispute is final?

No. A provisional credit is temporary account treatment. The final decision comes after the review, so read the notices and account entries for the actual status.

Do merchants have the same response window as cardholders?

No. The cardholder reporting period is separate. Merchants follow the deadline on the case notice from their acquirer or payment provider.

Does fraud evidence resolve every Bank of America dispute?

No. Delivery, product, cancellation and billing complaints need records that answer those specific allegations.
