En resumen:

  • A chargeback ratio divides a defined count of chargebacks by a defined count of transactions.
  • Chargeback ratio is not automatically the same as VAMP ratio.
  • Compare ratios only after matching their numerator, denominator, date basis, payment scope, and exclusions.
  • An operational example: 75 disputes divided by 10,000 successful payments is 0.75%, which is not a VAMP result.

A chargeback ratio divides a defined count of chargebacks by a defined count of transactions. The date basis and network rules matter: an internal chargeback rate is not automatically the same metric as Visa's VAMP ratio.

The same measure goes by several names, including chargeback ratio, chargeback rate, chargeback-to-transaction ratio, and chargeback to sales ratio. The chargeback ratio formula is chargebacks divided by transactions, but a chargeback ratio calculation is only as reliable as its definitions. The names describe the same idea only when the numerator, denominator, and period match. This article shows how to calculate each version from your own chargeback data, where it differs from Visa's program metric, and what the figure means for your account.

How to Calculate Chargeback Ratio: A Chargeback Rate Calculation You Can Reproduce

Chargeback rate calculator

Calculate a defined operational rate

Disputes received ÷ successful payments × 100

Use the same stated account, processor and payment scope.

Keep the reporting period and eligible payment definition explicit.

75 ÷ 10,000 × 1000.75%

Operational received-case rate. Label the period and definition next to the result. The starting values are hypothetical, so replace them with your own counts.

This calculator is not a Visa VAMP result or a purchase-cohort loss rate. VAMP needs its own fraud-report data, exclusions, settled-transaction scope and program conditions.

This operational example is not automatically a network monitoring ratio or a transaction-cohort loss rate. For a purchase cohort, assign each dispute back to the original purchase period and account for cases that arrive later. Dispute activity can be measured by dispute date, while a dispute rate can use the original charge date, so state the date basis, population, numerator, denominator, and pending outcomes (Stripe: measuring disputes). VAMP uses its own defined event scope, covered below.

Keep the records behind each count so the number can be rebuilt later. The chargeback evidence sources guide explains where those records come from and how they are joined. The best long-term fix for a high figure is to prevent chargebacks before they happen, and the ratio is also useful next to your chargeback win rate, which measures dispute outcomes rather than dispute volume.

Compare Internal Reporting With the Visa Program Metric

Each card network and processor can define its own ratio, and each counts only the activity in its own scope, so you might see a different figure from each source. Compare ratios only after matching their numerator, denominator, date basis, payment scope, and exclusions.

Visa's VAMP concerns domestic and cross-border VisaNet card-not-present activity: applicable TC40 fraud reports plus TC15 disputes, divided by settled TC05 transactions. Exclusions include qualifying pre-dispute resolutions and Compelling Evidence 3.0 fraud, subject to extract timing. VAMP is therefore not only a chargeback rate.

Visa's older monitoring programs worked differently from VAMP; see how Visa's Fraud Monitoring Program compared before relying on older figures.

¿Cuál es un índice de devoluciones aceptable?

There is no single acceptable chargeback ratio. A 1% figure is often quoted, but it is not a rule set by every network, processor, or acquirer, and acquirers can apply stricter limits based on their own risk tolerance. Which figure matters depends on the program that is measuring you.

For Visa, the VAMP excessive-merchant ratio from April 1, 2026 is at least 150 basis points (1.5%) for Asia Pacific, Canada, Europe, and the US, together with at least 1,500 fraud and dispute events in a month. Other regions use different values: Latin America and the Caribbean use 150 basis points and 1,500 events, while Central Europe, Middle East, and Africa use 220 basis points, 150 events, and USD 75,000. The fact sheet conditions merchant thresholds on the acquirer's own standing, and the 1,500 minimum counts fraud and dispute events, not sales volume (Visa VAMP fact sheet). Visa also measures enumeration separately.

Mastercard runs its own program. Its Excessive Chargeback Merchant tiers combine a chargeback count with a ratio, and figures often cited are 100 chargebacks with a ratio of 1.5% to 2.99% for ECM and 300 chargebacks with 3% or higher for the High Excessive tier (Stripe: dispute monitoring programs). Treat those as reference points only, and confirm the current figures and the denominator Mastercard uses with your acquirer. Our guide to the Excessive Chargeback Merchant program explains Mastercard's monitoring in more detail, and the chargeback threshold guide compares limits across processors. Do not apply Visa's VAMP values to Mastercard, or the reverse.

¿Qué ocurre si tu índice de devoluciones es elevado?

A high chargeback-to-transaction ratio is bad news for any merchant. A structured approach to chargeback management keeps disputes under control, and a documented chargeback mitigation plan sets out what to do when the ratio rises.

Depending on the program and your acquirer, you may be placed in a chargeback monitoring program. Acquirers can require remediation plans and monthly reporting for listed merchants, and they can charge program fees or pass network assessments on to the merchant. The amounts depend on your acquirer agreement and the program, so ask your acquirer for the current schedule. Tools like real-time chargeback alerts help catch disputes before they escalate, and automating chargeback recovery can recover revenue that would otherwise stay lost.

The impact is not only financial. A high ratio can lead an acquirer to place a reserve on your account or review it for termination, and without a merchant account you cannot accept card payments. Sound chargeback risk management keeps the ratio from reaching that point.

Cómo mantener baja la tasa de devoluciones

Some merchants treat chargebacks as a cost of doing business, but the actual cost of a chargeback goes beyond the disputed amount: it includes fees, lost merchandise, and staff time. Many disputes are also friendly fraud, where the cardholder disputes a purchase they made, so a claim alone does not show the cardholder's intent. Track your ratio every month, using one stated definition, and act on the causes behind it.

Start with avoidable errors. Stop chargebacks arising from avoidable merchant errors, follow the issuer's authorization rules, and use fraud detection on every payment. Card-network chargeback rules shape every dispute, so know them before you respond.

Then review the whole customer journey and make sure your sales process is not creating disputes. Does your product description match the product images? Can customers easily find your contact details and get timely responses? Do they know when orders will arrive, how to return a faulty product, and when to expect a refund? Do you check that the right product is sent? A clear refund policy also reduces friendly fraud. If the ratio is already too high, follow our 30/60/90-day plan on how to reduce chargebacks, ordered by how fast each fix moves the number.

Chargeback Ratio FAQs

Is chargeback ratio the same as Visa VAMP ratio?

Chargeback ratio is not automatically the same as VAMP ratio. VAMP combines applicable fraud and dispute counts over settled transactions and includes program-specific exclusions and conditions.

Can I compare ratios from two dashboards directly?

Compare ratios only after matching their numerator, denominator, date basis, payment scope, and exclusions. Different definitions can produce different results for the same business.

Does software calculate chargeback ratios automatically?

Many processors and dispute dashboards report a ratio automatically, but each uses its own definition. Check the numerator, denominator, and period behind the displayed figure before comparing it with a network threshold.

¿Cuál es una tasa de devoluciones aceptable?

There is no single acceptable rate. A 1% figure is often quoted, but thresholds depend on the network program, region, acquirer, and your own agreement, so confirm the figure that applies to you.

Reflexiones finales sobre el índice de devoluciones

Your chargeback ratio highlights your exposure to disputes and fraud. Card networks and acquirers watch their own versions of it, and so should you. The wider goal is to prevent eCommerce chargebacks across the store. Once in a while, buy from your own store to experience the checkout yourself, and confirm that the price at checkout matches the product page.
