This guide covers merchant evidence preparation for Apple Pay card-payment disputes: matching the payment, understanding the allegation, and organizing relevant exhibits. For payment-product routing and general responsibilities, use the Apple Pay chargeback guide.
An Apple Pay dispute is a complaint about a payment made using a card in Apple Pay. For merchant card purchases, the dispute follows the underlying card and payment-provider workflow; Apple Pay’s security features do not remove the cardholder’s ability to dispute an Apple Pay charge.
Identify the Payment and Case Type
This guide covers merchant card payments. Apple Cash person-to-person transfers, Apple Card account issues, and purchases billed directly by Apple have their own support routes. Identify the product and transaction before directing the customer or preparing evidence.
For a card payment through your store, locate the case with the provider that processed it. For example, Stripe explains in its Apple Pay dispute documentation that these disputes use the same process as card payments.

| Evento | O que verificar | Lojista Ação |
|---|---|---|
| Customer asks about a charge | Receipt, descriptor, date, and amount | Help identify the purchase and investigate the complaint |
| Inquiry or eligible alert | Current stage and service instructions | Respond or resolve through the applicable workflow |
| Formal chargeback | Dispute reason, amount, and deadline | Accept or submit relevant evidence where permitted |
| Recorded outcome | Status and actual balance adjustments | Reconcile funds, fees, and any earlier refund |
Use the dispute-stage guide and merchant response workflow to assign the correct next step. Not every case passes through an inquiry or alert before a chargeback.
Match Tokenized Payments Correctly
The Apple Pay card number can differ from the physical card number. Apple’s refund guidance explains this distinction and notes that merchants may use the Apple Pay card number when locating a refund.
Start with the provider’s payment ID, order ID, date, amount, and currency. Treat displayed card digits as supporting matching information. A mismatch with the physical card’s last digits is not independently evidence of fraud. Do not ask customers to send a full card number or sensitive authentication credentials to resolve the case.
Verify Liability Protection on the Actual Transaction
Apple Pay uses tokenized payment data and device security. It does not require a biometric action in every circumstance. Apple’s security overview describes authentication options including a passcode and exceptions such as Express Mode.
Liability protection depends on the transaction and network conditions. As a processor-specific example, Stripe documents Visa device-version and card-region conditions for Apple Pay liability shift. Confirm eligibility through your provider rather than assuming that the wallet name proves protection.
A fraud liability shift does not answer claims about delivery, product quality, cancellations, or missing credits. Review authorization evidence separately from the underlying service complaint.
Choose Evidence by the Claim
Follow the current case and provider requirements
Choose Apple Pay records by the disputed fact
Pagamento não autorizado
For unauthorized-payment claims, retrieve the authentication result and relevant transaction context available through your provider.
Non-receipt
For non-receipt, connect the promised delivery or service date with actual fulfillment.
Quality complaint
For quality complaints, compare the purchase-time description with what was supplied.
Cobranças duplicadas
For duplicate charges, reconcile payment IDs and capture status.
Missing credits
For missing credits, show the refund amount, date, reference, and completion status.
Use the non-receipt guide and product-quality dispute guide when applicable. Do not request a biometric record that your business does not receive or claim that device authentication proves every part of the sale.
Use the Provider’s Deadline and Refund Workflow
Read the response cutoff on the case. There is no universal Apple Pay merchant response window. Review the final packet and confirm submission rather than treating a saved draft as sent.
Before a refund, check for an open dispute or prior credit. Use refund and chargeback reconciliation to avoid duplicate reimbursement. A customer’s statement that they withdrew a dispute does not establish that it closed; follow the provider’s documentation requirements.
Track Prevention and Recovery Separately
Reconcile the outcome, disputed amount, fees, and refund records. Do not assume every fee is returned after a win or that recovery removes the original dispute from monitoring.
Use early resolution services where supported and prevention controls for recurring causes. If evidence handling needs coordination, explore Chargeflow’s automated recovery workflow.
Build a Apple Pay claim-to-evidence worksheet
This page owns merchant evidence preparation for a card purchase. Use Apple Pay payment routing and chargeback context to identify the product and processing channel first. Match the order using the provider payment reference, amount, currency, and capture time; do not rely on card digits alone.
| Allegation | Evidence task |
|---|---|
| Payment was not authorized | Check the actual authentication and transaction records and applicable provider conditions. |
| Goods or access not received | Connect the order to delivery or access records and the customer complaint. |
| Product differs from the promise | Preserve the purchase-time listing, selected variant, and return or support chronology. |
| Refund was promised but not received | Match the refund ID, amount, processing status, and affected payment. |
Authentication does not establish delivery or product quality. For its separate scope, see the 3D Secure authentication guide. Remove irrelevant exhibits before final submission.

Sources and scope
Source notes updated: October 11, 2026. Apple Pay card-funded payments. Identify the processor and the actual authentication record. A wallet label alone does not establish liability shift or a merchant response deadline.
For a live case, retain the governing document’s edition or effective date, the relevant provision, and the provider notice.
