A Stripe dispute is a payment complaint handled through the payment method’s dispute process and shown in your Stripe account. For card payments, the issuing bank generally evaluates the claim while Stripe supports case notification, evidence submission, and balance adjustments.

Read the Status Before Taking Action
Start with the exact payment in Stripe. Record the dispute ID, reason, amount, currency, and displayed deadline. Match the case to the order, account, and any existing refund.
| Status | Practical Meaning |
|---|---|
| needs_response | Review the claim and respond through the available workflow |
| under_review | The submitted response is being evaluated |
| won or lost | Review the recorded outcome and financial adjustments |
| warning_needs_response or warning_under_review | Handle the inquiry stage and its instructions |
| warning_closed | An inquiry closed without becoming a formal dispute |
| prevented | The event was prevented from becoming a formal chargeback |
These status distinctions come from Stripe’s dispute object reference. Do not count every closed event as a lost chargeback.
Separate Response Deadlines From Resolution Time
Use the cutoff shown on the case. Stripe’s dispute lifecycle guide describes typical merchant response windows of 7–21 days, issuer review of 60–75 days, and a total lifecycle that can take 2–3 months. These are general references; the actual payment method, reason, and stage determine the applicable workflow.
Not every dispute can be challenged. If the case is already closed or does not offer a response, check the explanation before assuming that a submission was missed.
Understand Received and Countered Fees
Stripe distinguishes a fee for receiving a dispute from a fee for countering one. The amount and exceptions depend on the account’s country and terms. Consult Stripe’s current pricing and your account agreement instead of applying one US dollar figure globally.
Where a countered fee applies, Stripe documents its return when the dispute is won. Received-fee treatment has location and contractual exceptions. Reconcile each fee separately from the disputed funds; do not label the entire case fee-free after a win.
The refund and chargeback guide explains why the original payment, refund, disputed amount, and fees need separate records.

Prepare a Reason-Specific Response
Follow the current case and provider requirements
Review the complete Stripe response before its final send
Read the claim
Read the actual claim and decide whether the records support accepting or challenging it.
Connect relevant records
Connect the relevant fulfillment, access, billing, or authentication records to the payment.
Write the factual explanation
Use a concise factual explanation and readable attachments.
Review field instructions
Review prefilled information and field-specific instructions.
Confirm final submission
Check the final packet and confirm submission before the deadline.
For Visa CE 3.0 evidence, Stripe specifically advises leaving prefilled qualifying fields unchanged because edits can affect eligibility. Add requested missing information and follow the applicable instructions. Do not extend that special rule into a blanket claim that every prefilled field must never be reviewed. Our Stripe chargebacks guide covers the evidence that fits each dispute reason.
Stripe’s response guide explains final submission and CE 3.0 handling. Once you submit the standard response, you cannot amend it or add files, so complete the review first.
Use the evidence panel guide for field review, the Stripe evidence checklist for case preparation, and the digital goods evidence guide for access records. Relevant evidence supports evaluation; it does not guarantee a win.
Before final review, use the Stripe dispute response checklist to check the case record, relevant attachments and submission confirmation.
Handle Refunds and Customer Withdrawals Carefully
When a dispute is open, follow the available case workflow before issuing a separate credit. Check previous refunds and their completion status. If a customer says they withdrew the dispute, continue following the required response process until the case is resolved.
For a recorded loss or unexpected status, use the Stripe outcome diagnostic. Identify a documented inconsistency rather than assuming that every loss has an appeal path.
Measure Disputes and Recovery Separately
Stripe’s measurement documentation distinguishes dispute activity by dispute date from dispute rate by charge date. Winning a dispute does not erase it from the dispute rate. Network monitoring calculations and account risk review also require their own context.
Use prevention controls to address recurring causes and early resolution workflows where supported. For coordinated evidence preparation and submission, explore Chargeflow’s automated chargeback recovery.
Use the Stripe chargeback management workflow to assign case owners, manage exceptions and report preparation and recovery separately.
Review a Stripe evidence packet before final submission
This page owns evidence preparation and submission. Use the Stripe balance-reconciliation guide for debits, fee entries, and outcome credits. Start by opening the actual case, reading the customer’s allegation, and matching the dispute to the payment and order.
| Review | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Case and claim | The case ID, reason, amount, currency, and due date match the packet. |
| Relevant exhibits | Each record answers the allegation and uses the correct order or payment. |
| Existing credits | Refund IDs and amounts are checked before presenting the balance history. |
| Final submission | The team has completed review and retains the resulting submission status. |
Stripe’s response documentation states that a submitted response cannot be edited or supplemented. Review the complete packet before final submission; saving working evidence is not the same as completing the response.

For card disputes, the issuing bank generally evaluates the claim while Stripe supports the response workflow and communicates the outcome.

Stripe dispute costs depend on country, account terms, and whether the case is countered. Review received and countered fees separately using current pricing and your agreement.
Can I change a Stripe dispute response after submitting?
Stripe’s standard response workflow does not allow edits or additional files after final submission. Review relevant evidence and field-specific instructions before sending it.
Does winning a Stripe dispute lower the dispute rate?
Winning a Stripe dispute recovers funds but does not remove the dispute from the dispute rate. Track recovery outcomes separately from received disputes.
