Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program (NDRP)

Resumo:

  • Shopify can automatically enroll accounts at an NDRP-inclusive rate of 1.5% or higher over the previous 90 days; broader risk factors and minimum-volume exclusions also apply.
  • NDRP resolutions reimburse the full order and incur a regional fee, with no Shopify evidence or appeal route.
  • Exit requires the NDRP-inclusive rate to stay below 1.00% for 30 consecutive days while processing continues. Suspended or terminated accounts may be ineligible.
  • NDRP resolutions and won disputes remain in this rate. Visa and Mastercard monitoring use separate criteria.

Shopify’s Network Dispute Resolution Program (NDRP) is an automated dispute-handling system that Shopify enrolls high-risk merchants into after an account review flags an elevated chargeback rate, with possible automatic enrollment at an NDRP-inclusive rate of 1.5% or higher over the last 90 days; once you’re in it, Shopify refunds disputed orders on your behalf and bills you a flat resolution fee, with no option to submit evidence or appeal the outcome.

Shopify runs the NDRP to protect its own standing with Visa and Mastercard. Every payment processor is monitored by the card networks, and a merchant portfolio with too many chargebacks puts Shopify’s own processing relationships at risk. Auto-enrolling high-dispute stores into a program that resolves cases instantly, before they escalate into formal chargebacks, is how Shopify keeps its overall dispute numbers in check. If your store gets pulled in, it’s a signal worth acting on, not just an inconvenience to wait out.

What Is Shopify’s Network Dispute Resolution Program?

The NDRP is Shopify’s way of resolving a dispute before it becomes a full chargeback. Instead of going through the usual evidence and response process, Shopify settles the case on the spot, in the customer’s favor.

Once your store is enrolled, here’s what happens every time a covered dispute comes in:

For automatically resolved NDRP cases

Refund, fee and final resolution

  1. Full order reimbursement

Shopify returns the full order amount before the dispute becomes a formal chargeback.

  2. Regional resolution fee

A fee applies to each resolved case. Check the order details and the published country or region schedule.

  3. Final outcome

There is no evidence-submission window or Shopify appeal for a case resolved through NDRP.

Automatic resolutions still count in Shopify’s NDRP-inclusive rate. Shopify’s current program guidance; checked 11 October 2026.

Automatic resolution avoids the formal evidence-response process, but it does not remove the case from Shopify’s NDRP-inclusive rate. When enrollment is due to a high rate, Shopify also describes a 10% payout reserve; review the reserve terms sent to your account.

Why You Get Automatically Enrolled: Shopify’s Risk Review and 1.5% Criterion

Shopify’s current guidance says an NDRP-inclusive rate of 1.5% or higher over the previous 90 days can trigger automatic enrollment. Broader account-risk factors also apply, and minimum-volume exclusions protect smaller stores. The separate exit target remains below 1.00%. Source: Shopify NDRP guidance (checked 11 October 2026).

Shopify calculates this rate from every dispute a customer opens against a chargeback-eligible transaction (a payment processed through Shopify Payments), not just the ones you lose. Winning a dispute doesn’t remove it from the calculation; only the volume of disputes relative to your total eligible transactions matters. That’s why a string of avoidable disputes, even ones you’d win on evidence, can still push you into the program.

How Shopify’s Threshold Compares to Visa and Mastercard’s Own Monitoring Programs

Shopify’s NDRP enrollment and exit criteria are separate from Visa and Mastercard monitoring. Each uses its own counts, denominators, account scope and review period. A percentage alone does not establish placement or guarantee that another program’s limits are met.

What Ignoring the Dispute Rate Actually Costs You

Staying in the NDRP is not the only risk. If the same dispute rate also crosses Mastercard’s thresholds (1.5%-2.99% dispute rate plus 100-299 disputes for ECM, 3%+ dispute rate plus 300+ disputes for HECM), fines escalate by month of non-compliance, on top of any Shopify NDRP fees already paid. Issuer recovery assessment applies at every paid tier for both programs.

Month of Non-ComplianceMastercard ECM FineMastercard HECM Fine
Month 1No fineNo fine
Mês 2$1,000$1,000
3º mês$1,000$2,000
Months 4-6$5,000$10,000
Months 7-11$25,000$50,000
Months 12-18$50,000$100,000
Mês 19+$100,000$200,000

These fines are not even the worst-case outcome. If your account is eventually suspended or terminated for excessive chargebacks, Mastercard and Visa can add you to a merchant-termination file (Mastercard’s MATCH list, Visa’s equivalent), which typically stays on record for up to five years and makes opening a new merchant account with any acquirer extremely difficult. See Chargeflow’s full breakdown of 2026 chargeback thresholds and how to avoid Mastercard’s monitoring programs for the mechanics behind both.

How to Get Out of the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program

Getting removed from the NDRP is a matter of hitting Shopify’s published exit criteria and, if the program doesn’t lift automatically, asking Shopify to review your account.

Shopify Payments · exit eligibility

Check the rolling rate and sustained performance

  1. Open the rate report

In Shopify admin, use Analytics → Reports → Chargeback rate and review the previous 90 days.

  2. Get below the exit target

The NDRP-inclusive rate must fall below 1.00% and remain below it for 30 consecutive days while you continue processing on Shopify Payments.

  3. Confirm account eligibility

Suspended or terminated accounts may be ineligible to exit. Check monitoring status in Shopify Payments settings and contact Support if needed.

The rate includes standard chargebacks, automatically resolved NDRP cases and won disputes. Shopify NDRP exit requirements; checked 11 October 2026.

One caveat Shopify states plainly but most guides skip: if your store has already been suspended or terminated from Shopify Payments, you might not be eligible to exit the NDRP at all, even if your dispute rate later qualifies. The exit path above assumes your account is still in good standing.

There’s a second wrinkle tied to that one: termination does not retroactively clear NDRP fees. Disputes tied to orders placed before your account closed still get resolved (and billed) through the NDRP; only disputes on orders created after termination shift over to the regular chargeback process, per Shopify’s own documentation.

There’s no shortcut around the 30-day sustained requirement. Shopify built it in specifically so that a temporary dip in disputes (a slow month, a handful of resolved refunds) doesn’t get a high-risk store released prematurely.

How to Avoid Enrollment in the First Place

The NDRP is a symptom, not the actual problem. Real Shopify chargeback prevention means keeping your dispute rate low enough that you never trigger a risk review at all. That comes down to five levers:

  1. Fast, human customer support. Most disputes start as a complaint the customer couldn’t resolve with you directly. A live chat response or a same-day refund resolves the issue before the customer opens their banking app.
  2. Accurate product descriptions and imagery. “Item not as described” is one of the most common dispute reasons on Shopify stores. Sizing charts, real photos, and honest material/condition details cut this category down directly.
  3. On-time, trackable shipping. Publish realistic delivery windows and upload tracking numbers the moment an order ships. “Item not received” disputes spike whenever a customer can’t see where their package is.
  4. Fraud screening at checkout. Stolen-card and account-takeover orders convert into chargebacks almost every time. Screening risky orders before they ship, through ecommerce fraud prevention tools, keeps them out of your dispute rate entirely.
  5. Chargeback alerts and prevention tooling. Even well-run stores get disputes from friendly fraud, customers disputing a charge instead of requesting a refund. Juniper Research projects friendly fraud will grow from 22% of all chargebacks in 2026 to 28% by 2031, so this category is only getting bigger. Tools like Chargeflow Alerts intercept these before they turn into a formal chargeback at all, resolving eligible cases through the supported program. Confirm their treatment in Shopify’s NDRP-inclusive rate; an automatic resolution does not necessarily remove a counted case.

This last point is the one most merchants miss. Chargeback rate isn’t just a customer-service metric, it’s also a fraud and abuse metric, and a growing share of disputes never touch your support team before they hit your bank. Chargeflow Alerts, powered by Visa and Mastercard’s own alert networks, deflects up to 90% of preventable chargebacks within 24 hours of setup, with no dispute fee charged when a chargeback is successfully prevented. Chargeflow Prevent works earlier in the funnel, blocking friendly-fraud and repeat-abuse transactions before they’re ever processed. Used together, these controls can reduce eligible disputes. Measure the actual NDRP-inclusive rate and each network’s separate criteria; no tool guarantees staying below every threshold. Recovery tools have nothing to work with here: once a dispute settles through the NDRP there’s no evidence to submit and no case to win, so prevention is the only lever that gets a store out of the program and keeps it out.

The cost math backs this up: LexisNexis Risk Solutions found merchants pay $5.13 for every $1 of direct fraud loss once chargeback fees, product loss, and operational overhead are added, so keeping disputes out of your rate is cheaper than fighting them after the fact. Perguntas frequentes

What dispute rate gets a Shopify store enrolled in the NDRP?

Shopify says automatic enrollment is possible at an NDRP-inclusive rate of 1.5% or higher over the last 90 days. Broader account-risk factors and minimum-volume exclusions apply. This differs from the below-1.00% exit criterion.

What is an acceptable chargeback rate on Shopify?

Shopify publishes a possible 1.5% automatic-enrollment criterion and a below-1.00% exit criterion. A lower rate provides headroom, but account-risk factors and separate network measures also apply.

How many chargebacks am I allowed on Shopify?

Shopify does not cap the raw number of chargebacks directly; what matters is your chargeback rate, disputes divided by chargeback-eligible transactions, over a rolling 90-day window (see how to calculate your chargeback ratio). Transaction volume affects the rate, and minimum-volume exclusions and broader risk factors also matter.

How do I check my Shopify chargeback rate?

In Shopify admin, use Analytics → Reports → Chargeback rate and select the previous 90 days. Review enrollment and monitoring status separately in Shopify Payments settings.

How much does Shopify charge for a dispute resolved through the NDRP?

Shopify charges a flat, region-based resolution fee per dispute resolved through the NDRP, roughly $15 USD, €15 EUR, £10 GBP, or $25 AUD, with Ireland’s fee including 23% VAT. This is separate from the standard chargeback fee charged on disputes handled through the normal chargeback process.

Can I win or appeal a dispute resolved through the NDRP?

No. Disputes resolved through the NDRP are final: Shopify refunds the customer automatically, and there is no evidence submission or appeal process. This differs from a standard chargeback, where merchants can submit evidence and potentially win representment.

How long does it take to get removed from Shopify’s NDRP?

The NDRP-inclusive rate over the previous 90 days must remain below 1.00% for 30 consecutive days while you continue processing on Shopify Payments. Suspended or terminated accounts may be ineligible to exit.

Is Shopify’s NDRP the same thing as Visa’s VAMP or Mastercard’s ECM?

No. Shopify NDRP, Visa VAMP and Mastercard monitoring have different counts, denominators, scope and criteria. A store can enter NDRP through an account-risk review without meeting a network program’s criteria.

What happens if my dispute rate stays high after Shopify’s NDRP?

If the same dispute rate also crosses Mastercard’s ECM or HECM thresholds, fines escalate by month of non-compliance, starting at $1,000 in month two and reaching $100,000 to $200,000 per month by month 19, on top of any Shopify NDRP fees already paid.

Chargeflow backs Alerts and automated dispute recovery with a 4X ROI guarantee and a 100% submission rate, on top of the up-to-90% chargeback deflection already covered above. Start for free and put your Shopify dispute rate on autopilot.

Keep Your Shopify Dispute Rate Under 1% for Good

The NDRP itself isn’t the risk, an unmanaged dispute rate is. Every lever that keeps you out of the program (responsive support, honest listings, reliable shipping, fraud screening, and chargeback alerts) is also what keeps you clear of Visa’s and Mastercard’s own monitoring programs. Merchants who treat their dispute rate as a number to actively manage, rather than something to react to after an enrollment email, rarely see either.

If disputes are already climbing, start with the transactions you can still influence: Chargeflow’s Prevent screens incoming orders for fraud risk before they ship, and chargeback alerts catch the ones that slip through, resolving them before they count against your rate. For whatever still becomes a formal chargeback outside the NDRP, Chargeflow’s automated recovery handles evidence and submission end-to-end, backed by a 4X ROI guarantee: fewer disputes in, higher win rates on the ones that land. Merchants comparing providers for whatever still becomes a formal dispute can see how to evaluate a chargeback recovery service. For the full picture on fighting and preventing chargebacks on Shopify beyond the NDRP specifically, see Chargeflow’s Shopify chargebacks guide.
