En bref :

  • Compare the same year, market, channel and measurement; a historical debit-wallet share is not current global market share.
  • Apple Pay supports eligible third-party browser checkout using an Apple device; Google Pay web checkout supports multiple browsers.
  • Google Wallet passes, Google Pay checkout and Google Pay’s India payment service are different products and measures.
  • Historical statistics remain dated and sourced. Test the payment flows your customers can actually use.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are mobile wallets that let shoppers pay with a phone, watch or browser instead of typing card details. Google Pay is the payment service and Google Wallet is the app that stores the cards, as Google’s Wallet and Pay explanation sets out.

Apple Pay leads in the U.S.: 16% of U.S. consumers used it in a store in the past week in 2025, double the 2024 share, in a PYMNTS survey of 3,339 consumers. Google Pay in-store use more than doubled too.

Aperçu : Apple Pay vs Google Wallet

Quick answer: Compare the same year, market and payment channel. Apple Pay can support checkout in third-party browsers using an eligible Apple device; Google Pay web checkout supports several browsers. Test the flows your customers can actually use before choosing which buttons to offer.

Provider descriptions: Apple Pay and Apple Wallet; Google Wallet capabilities. These capabilities do not establish comparative annual processing volume.

Historical estimates elsewhere in this article should be read with their original source, date and metric. Do not treat a user estimate as a payment-volume figure.

Apple launched Apple Pay in 2014. It works across compatible Apple devices, with supported cards and participating merchants. A historical user estimate is not an observed 2026 user count; the dated estimate below remains separate from country availability and processing value.

In its September 30, 2026 India launch announcement, Apple reported availability in more than 90 countries and regions and support from more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide. Those are dated availability and partner counts, not active-user or transaction-share measures. Check Apple’s supported country and region list and your card issuer for current eligibility.

Why Apple Pay Stands Out: Apple Pay supports purchases in stores, on websites and in apps using compatible devices. Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode can authenticate payments. Merchant support and the customer's card and device determine the available checkout flow.

Google Wallet : le concurrent polyvalent d'Android

Google Wallet stores eligible cards, tickets, passes and other credentials. Google Pay remains the payment name for supported online, in-app and tap-to-pay flows. Do not combine Wallet app users, Google Pay checkout users and region-specific payment-app users into one global total without a common definition.

Google Wallet availability and payment support are separate questions. Use Google’s country and feature availability selector; passes, contactless payments and Wear OS support can differ by market, device and participating issuer. A single undated country count does not establish which payment features a customer can use.

Why Google Wallet Stands Out: Google Wallet combines payment cards with eligible transit passes, tickets and other credentials. Google Pay also supports online checkout. Available features depend on the customer's device, market and participating providers.

Unique Features at a Glance: What's New In 2026?

Preauthorized payments for subscriptions: participating merchants can support recurring or deferred Apple Pay payments, and supported cards can show them in Wallet. This capability predates iOS 26. Apple’s preauthorized-payment guidance explains that revoking authorization in Wallet does not cancel the underlying subscription; customers must manage it with the merchant.

Transit use: Apple Pay supports transit in eligible cities and can support Express Mode. Check the transport operator’s accepted cards and device rules before traveling; support for a transit feature does not establish its market share.

India product distinction: Google’s India-specific Wallet availability page, checked October 13, 2026, lists the Wallet app as available and contactless payments as unavailable. Google Pay’s India payment service is a separate product; pass-storage availability should not be counted as payment penetration.

To compare adoption, specify the country, payment channel, year and denominator first. A forecast for digital wallets as a category cannot establish that one individual wallet leads globally or that a wallet has become the default U.S. point-of-sale method.

Answer-first: Apple Pay leads in the U.S., where 16% of consumers used it in a store in the past week in 2025 (PYMNTS). Google Pay leads in India through UPI. The global figures below are forecasts for all digital wallets, not Apple Pay or Google Pay counts.

Global Digital-Wallet Market Context

Global forecasts measure the whole wallet market

More than 5.2 billion users

Juniper Research projected this global user count for 2026 in its August 2022 forecast.

More than $16 trillion

Juniper Research projected this annual global transaction value for 2028 in its July 2023 forecast.

These are projections across digital wallets. They are not observed Apple Pay or Google Pay user counts or individual annual processing totals.

La portée mondiale d'Apple Pay

PYMNTS’ October 22, 2024 article reported 744 million users globally in 2024. Treat that as the publication’s historical estimate, not an official observed 2026 total or a like-for-like Google Wallet comparison. Its date and user definition must stay attached to the figure.

User counts and payment values measure different things. Compare wallet statistics only when the source, year, geography and definition match.

Acceptance: over 85% of U.S. retailers

Apple’s Apple Cash page, checked October 13, 2026, reports this Apple Pay acceptance figure. It is a company-reported merchant-acceptance claim.

Weekly in-store use: 16% of U.S. consumers

PYMNTS found 16% of U.S. consumers used Apple Pay in a store in the past week in 2025, up from 8% in 2024.

Share of purchases: about 10%

The same PYMNTS Apple Pay report puts Apple Pay at about 10% of eligible in-store purchases and under 5% of all U.S. transactions.

Adoption d'Apple Pay à l'international

  • UK: Check supported cards, merchant acceptance and the specific checkout or transit flow.
  • Australia: Verify the participating issuer and merchant rather than inferring usage from country availability.
  • China: Country availability and local card/network support do not establish a comparative wallet market share.

Age-based adoption comparisons need a dated survey with the same population and definition for each wallet; the primary sources verified here do not establish that comparison.

Historical debit-wallet share: PULSE’s August 17, 2021 Debit Issuer Study release reported that Apple Pay accounted for 92% of U.S. debit transactions completed through Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay in 2020. That is a three-wallet debit-transaction measure, not Apple Pay’s share of all payments or a current 2026 market share.

La portée mondiale de Google Wallet

The sources verified for this comparison do not establish a comparable 2026 global active-user total for Google Wallet and Apple Pay. Treat app storage features, Google Pay checkout activity and India’s payment service as distinct measurements.

TechnologyChecker’s linked page measures storefront technology detections, not a Google Wallet user census. A claim framed as 65-70% of the smartphone market worldwide describes a different population and is not substantiated as a smartphone share by that linked directory. Do not use that wording to calculate or rank wallet users.

Google Wallet payment eligibility depends on the country, device, card and issuer. For online Google Pay checkout, your payment service providers must support the payment networks and credential types being offered. Country availability and smartphone installation counts do not measure active wallet use.

Volume des transactions et part de marché

The global digital wallet market processed over $13.9 trillion in 2023, with continued growth into 2025 as digital wallets expand across eCommerce and in-store payments. That market-wide figure cannot establish Google Pay's individual annual transaction value or its ranking against Apple Pay. A comparable vendor total needs its own source and the same measurement period and geography.

Google Pay is growing fast in the U.S. but from a smaller base than Apple Pay. PYMNTS found Google Pay in-store use more than doubled between 2024 and 2025, though it did not publish a share figure. Google does not report U.S. user totals or transaction share. For merchant planning, check eligibility, acceptance at your checkout and actual payment use in your own data.

Adoption internationale de Google Wallet

Google Wallet and Google Pay have market-specific features. Use the country and device requirements for the service you intend to offer:

  • India: Google Pay’s payment service differs from the Google Wallet passes app. The Wallet availability page checked October 13, 2026 does not list contactless payments as supported for India; verify the separate payment service and merchant flow you plan to offer.
  • UK: Confirm the card issuer, device and Google Pay checkout or Wallet tap-to-pay requirements.
  • France: Verify supported features and payment methods; country availability is not a share-of-usage comparison.

For an age-based adoption comparison, use a dated original survey that measures the same population and payment behavior for each wallet. Registered accounts, app downloads and monthly transactions are not interchangeable demographic measures.

Comparison rule: Android device share does not measure Google Pay users or payment transactions. Compare each wallet only within a common year, geography, channel and population.

Checkout Conversion Impact: Why Wallet Acceptance Is a Revenue Decision

For merchants, the more useful Apple Pay vs Google Pay question is not which wallet shoppers like better, it's what each one does to your checkout completion rate. Independent processor testing puts a hard number on that.

Stripe ran a statistically significant holdback experiment across its Optimized Checkout Suite, testing more than 50 payment methods against a base that processes $1.4 trillion a year. Merchants who offered Apple Pay saw a 22.3% increase in conversion and a 22.5% increase in revenue versus merchants who didn't. A separate Stripe test found that surfacing Apple Pay through the Express Checkout Element, instead of only at the end of checkout, produced an average 2x increase in conversion rate.

TestResult
Offering Apple Pay vs. not offering it+22.3% conversion
Offering Apple Pay vs. not offering it+22.5% revenue
Apple Pay shown early via Express Checkout Element (separate Stripe studies)~2x conversion rate

Google doesn't publish an equivalent independent study, but the underlying mechanism, fewer form fields and one-tap biometric authentication, applies to any wallet that skips manual card entry. The practical takeaway for merchants building a checkout strategy: put both wallets in front of the buyer early, not behind a "more payment options" click.

Short answer: Neither wallet is safer for every payment. Both keep your real card number from in-store merchants and need a screen lock or biometric check. Apple Pay always sends a device token from the iPhone's Secure Element with a one-time code. Online, Google Pay can also return a saved card number that may need 3D Secure.

For merchants, the difference is the credential your gateway receives. Apple Pay sends a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code. In stores, Google Wallet shares a virtual card and requires a screen lock. Online, Google Pay can return a device token or a card saved to a Google account, which needs 3D Secure where applicable.

Neither wallet replaces a broader ecommerce fraud prevention strategy. The details below show how the two differ.

Tokenization for secure transactions: Apple Pay uses device-specific payment credentials to keep the actual card number from merchants, reducing fraud risk. Google Pay checkout can return cards stored on a Google Account or Android device tokens, depending on the flow. Confirm credential type and required risk checks with your processor; wallet acceptance alone does not eliminate chargeback exposure.

Authentication: Apple Pay supports Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, with separate Express Mode behavior for eligible transit. Google Wallet tap-to-pay requires supported payment methods, screen-lock and device-security conditions. Authentication requirements depend on the device and payment flow, so do not assume every purchase requires biometrics.

Privacy and data sharing: distinguish payment data from optional Wallet features. Apple says it does not retain payment transaction information tied to the user, but its preauthorized-payment feature retains limited merchant-related information. Evaluate the specific provider feature and privacy settings rather than assigning either wallet a blanket “no tracking” label.

Consumer trust: The primary sources checked here do not establish a wallet-versus-wallet trust ranking by country. Provider security features and survey-reported preferences are different kinds of evidence.

Payment requirements: Confirm supported payment methods, authentication and processing requirements for the market and flow being offered. A wallet brand alone does not establish that a merchant’s complete checkout meets every applicable requirement.

Tokenized wallet payments can still turn into chargebacks. To see how Chargeflow handles those disputes, schedule a demo.

Digital Wallet Transactions and Chargeback Risk: What the Tokenization Data Shows

Tokenization can reduce exposure of card details, but it does not eliminate customer disputes. Authentication and evidence of delivery or service fulfillment answer different questions; cases involving friendly fraud still need transaction and order records. Our guide to mobile payment chargeback trends covers the wider risks merchants face as wallet use grows.

Visa’s cited tokenization reference reports an average 30% reduction in online fraud for token-based transactions versus PAN and a separate 4.6% authorization-rate lift for global card-not-present token transactions. Its footnotes refer to historical 2022 datasets and qualify merchant scope and variability. These network statistics are not an Apple Pay-versus-Google Pay experiment, and accepting either wallet does not automatically produce those results.

Google’s Google Pay card-credential reference distinguishes cards on file that return PAN information from Android device tokens that return a cryptogram. Apply the required risk checks to the actual payment flow rather than assuming every Google Pay online transaction uses a network token.

Do not infer a particular friendly-fraud share or dispute workload from wallet acceptance alone. Track your own reason codes and mature payment cohorts, and keep authorization, order, delivery and customer-communication evidence. The operational issues discussed in restaurant chargebacks remain relevant when customers pay with a wallet.

For cost context, LexisNexis Risk Solutions’ June 24, 2026 U.S. retail and ecommerce study release reports approximately $5.13 in total fraud cost per $1 of direct fraud loss for the U.S. study scope. That is a broader retail/ecommerce fraud-cost multiplier, not a wallet-specific chargeback fee or a guaranteed cost for every merchant. Tokenization reference: Visa, tokenization data. Merchant checklist: test coverage before choosing a wallet

Customer and country

Separate Apple Pay card payments, Google Pay checkout, Google Wallet passes and Google Pay’s India payment service. Availability is not active-user share.

Device and browser

Test Safari and relevant third-party browsers, Android and desktop checkout. Confirm button eligibility and successful handoff to the authorizing device.

Recurring payment

Test initial consent, subsequent charges, cancellation and support records. Revoking a payment credential and canceling a subscription are different actions.

Measure on the same basis

Compare completed payments and conversion for the same market, device mix, period and checkout placement. Keep historical survey figures separately labeled.

Provider implementation references: Apple Pay third-party browser support and Google Pay web prerequisites. Feature availability and integration requirements vary.

As digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay grow, so does the complexity of managing disputes tied to these transactions. Many unauthorized transactions don't fail at checkout. They show up later as chargebacks, so knowing what is a chargeback matters before untangling wallet-specific dispute patterns. Our directory of wallet and BNPL disputes shows where each wallet dispute is handled.

Instead of treating chargebacks as isolated events, Chargeflow connects dispute data, transaction behavior, and account activity to improve how cases are handled and prevented.

Grâce à « Chargeflow », les commerçants peuvent :

  • Prevent chargeback fraud before it turns into disputes with chargeback alerts, priced at $29 per prevented chargeback

  • Tap-to-Pay Eligibility: Confirm country, issuer, card and device requirements for contactless payments. Google Pay online checkout and Google Wallet tap-to-pay availability are separate from market-wide transaction-growth forecasts.
  • Digital Identity Adoption: Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support eligible identity features alongside payment services. Apple focuses on travel and TSA integration, while Google Wallet's zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) approach leans into privacy-first verification.
  • Measure payment behavior: Age-group and weekly-use comparisons require the same dated survey population and payment definition for each wallet.
  • India product scope: Google Pay’s India payment app and the Google Wallet passes app are distinct. Use the country-specific payment and pass features when choosing a merchant checkout flow.
  • Shift Toward Automated Dispute Handling: As digital wallet usage grows, merchants are moving from manual dispute workflows to automated systems that connect transaction data with dispute outcomes.
  • Transit features: Apple Pay and Google Wallet support eligible transit use cases; confirm operator, card and device support rather than inferring a transport market share.
  • Agentic Commerce Emerges: As AI shopping agents begin initiating Apple Pay and Google Pay transactions on consumers' behalf, AI agent chargeback liability and agentic commerce chargebacks are becoming new considerations for wallet providers and merchants.
  • What's Next: Digital wallets are expanding beyond payments into identity, access, and embedded finance. By the end of the decade, integration across devices, services, and authentication layers will define how Apple Pay vs Google Pay compete.

Apple Pay had an estimated 744 million users worldwide in 2024, according to PYMNTS; Apple does not publish an official count. In the U.S., 16% of consumers used Apple Pay in a store in the past week in 2025, double the 8% recorded in 2024, based on a PYMNTS survey of 3,339 consumers.

Google does not publish a global Google Pay user count. In the U.S., Google Pay in-store use more than doubled from 2024 to 2025 (PYMNTS). In India, where Google Pay is a UPI payment app, Google Pay and PhonePe together handled 79% of UPI transactions in May 2026, according to NPCI data reported by Outlook Business.

There is no single comparable figure here that establishes which wallet is bigger worldwide in 2026. The cited 2020 PULSE figure measures Apple Pay’s share within three U.S. debit wallets, while the 2025 usage survey and India UPI statistics measure different populations and channels. Compare matching measures before drawing a ranking.

What is Apple Pay's market share?

Apple Pay accounts for about 10% of eligible U.S. in-store purchases and under 5% of all U.S. transactions, according to a 2025 PYMNTS survey. Over 85% of U.S. retailers accept Apple Pay, according to Apple. Among U.S. debit wallet transactions, Apple Pay held a 92% share in 2020 (PULSE).

What is Google Pay's market share?

Google Pay has no published U.S. market share; Google does not report one. In India, Google Pay and PhonePe together held 79% of UPI transactions in May 2026 (NPCI data). In the U.S., Google Pay in-store use more than doubled from 2024 to 2025, but it remains behind Apple Pay.

Google Wallet stores eligible cards and passes, while Google Pay names supported payment services. Apple Wallet stores eligible cards and credentials, while Apple Pay handles payment flows. Compare the card, device, country and checkout features you need rather than treating each app name as a global adoption or security ranking.

Is there a downside to accepting Apple Pay for merchants?

Apple Pay depends on compatible Apple devices, cards and merchant support. It also works in third-party browsers at participating merchants through an iPhone QR-code flow, as described in Apple's browser guidance. Test the checkout paths your customers use and provide other supported payment options.

Apple Pay also keeps the underlying card details out of merchant systems, which strengthens security but means dispute evidence has to come from order, device, and delivery data rather than card-level detail.

What are the disadvantages of Google Pay for merchants?

The main disadvantage of Google Pay for merchants is that online payments can arrive as a saved card number rather than a device token, which may need 3D Secure and carries different fraud liability. Google Pay also reaches fewer U.S. shoppers than Apple Pay. Test the flows your customers use and keep your processor’s risk controls.

Why is Google Pay being discontinued?

Google’s February 22, 2024 U.S. app announcement said the standalone U.S. Google Pay app would stop being available on June 4, 2024. Online checkout and tap-to-pay were to continue, and Google said its India and Singapore apps were unaffected. This was a U.S. consumer-app change, not the worldwide replacement of the Google Pay payment name. Related coverage: PaymentsJournal.

Which is more secure, Apple Pay or Google Pay?

Neither is more secure in every case. Both tokenize in-store payments and require a screen lock or biometric check. Apple Pay uses a Secure Element device token for every card payment, and Apple keeps no card transaction data tied to you. Online, Google Pay can return a saved card number, so confirm 3D Secure with your processor.
