En bref :
- Treat every disputed renewal as its own case, with its own terms, cancel request, charge, shipment and refund record.
- Visa 13.2 and Mastercard 4853 carry most cancelled-renewal disputes, while trial complaints can arrive as Visa 13.5.
- Visa trial offers need express consent, a 7-day pre-billing reminder and a "trial" descriptor on the first post-trial charge.
- ROSCA and state laws such as California's still apply even though the FTC click-to-cancel amendments were vacated in 2025.
- A missed cancel sync can breach VAMP’s regional limits; the listed 1.5% regions also require at least 1,500 counted events.
Supplement subscription chargebacks are card disputes on recurring orders for vitamins, nutraceuticals or other supplements. To answer one, you link the disputed renewal to the terms the customer accepted, their cancel history, the shipment and any refund. An "active" status or a delivered parcel alone rarely settles the case.
The hard cases sit between systems. A customer cancels in the portal. The billing app still creates the order. The warehouse ships it, and support promises a refund. Each team sees a different status, so your dispute file needs one clear account of what really happened.

Why Do Supplement Subscription Chargebacks Happen?
Most renewal disputes start with a gap between what the customer expected and what your records show. A buyer may grasp the first order but miss the recurring price. A pause may apply to one shipment, not every plan. An address change may land after the order already left.
Other disputes start with real errors on your side:
- A cancel request arrived but was never applied.
- A paid shipment went out of stock and never shipped.
- Support approved a refund that never went through.
Rule those out before you treat a renewal dispute as friendly fraud.
Sort the case by what the customer actually claims. Unauthorized use, a missed cancel, non-delivery, product quality and a missing credit each need a different file. Record both the processor reason code and the customer's own words, because the code label is often broader than the issue.
Do not use one customer-level export as proof for every cycle. A screen that says "canceled" today does not show whether the disputed renewal was canceled earlier. An old signup record does not prove a later cancel request was invalid.

Which Reason Codes Cover Supplement Renewal Disputes?
Most supplement renewal disputes land in a handful of codes. Visa uses 13.2 for a cancelled recurring transaction (see the full list of Visa chargeback reason codes).
Mastercard now files most of these under 4853, its cardholder dispute code, though some processors still show the older 4841 label. Check the code on each case, then pull the evidence that answers it.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Réclamation d'un client | Visa code | Mastercard code | Evidence that answers it |
|---|---|---|---|
| "I canceled, but you charged me again" | 13.2 Cancelled Recurring | 4853 (shown as 4841 by some providers) | Accepted terms, cancel request with time and scope, proof the charge came first or the request missed the stated method |
| "I never agreed to a subscription" | 13.5 Misrepresentation (trial offers) | 4853 | Express consent at checkout, trial terms, enrollment email, pre-billing reminder |
| "I never got the order" | 13.1 Not Received | 4853 | Carrier handoff, address, delivery scan or documented exception |
| "It was not what you advertised" | 13.3 Not as Described | 4853 | Offer page, label, quantity and formula records for that order |
| "You promised a refund" | 13.6 Credit Not Processed | 4853 | Refund status, amount, date and processor reference |
| "I did not make this purchase" | 10.4 Other Fraud, Card Absent | 4837 | Account history, device and login data, prior undisputed renewals |
Cardholders generally have up to 120 days to file, but your own response clock is much shorter. Use the due date on the case and see our chargeback time limits guide for network detail. For code-by-code exhibits, the guide on tailoring evidence to each reason code goes deeper, and the Mastercard reason code list explains the 4841 and 4853 labels.
What Card Network Rules Apply to Supplement Free Trials?
Both Visa and Mastercard have written rules for trial and negative option offers, and supplement funnels sit right in their scope. If your offer starts with a free or discounted trial, these rules shape both your checkout and your dispute defense. The free-trial conversion chargebacks guide covers the billing timeline in more depth.
Visa vs Mastercard trial rules at a glance
Visa (since April 18, 2020)
Get express consent to the subscription. Email the terms at signup, even for a $0 order. Send a reminder with a cancel link at least 7 days before billing when a trial ends or terms change. Add "trial" to the descriptor on the first post-trial charge. Offer online cancel.
Mastercard (free trials of physical goods, since April 2019)
Register the merchant through your acquirer in the Mastercard Registration Program and use MCC 5968. The trial starts when the customer receives the product. Before the first full-price charge, get explicit consent to the start date, amount, payment date, statement name and cancel steps. Send a receipt with cancel steps after each approved charge. Give a direct link to cancel online.
Mastercard (all subscriptions, since October 11, 2022)
Show the terms on the payment page and capture acceptance before the order completes. Email a confirmation with cancel steps right after signup. Provide an online way to cancel. For plans billed every six months or less often, send a reminder 7 to 30 days before billing. A receipt after each billing is recommended, and required after 4 or more months in the Acquirer Chargeback Monitoring Program.

Morgan) and Mastercard subscription billing summary, plus Mastercard's Transaction Processing Rules (10 June 2025, Rules 5.1.1, 5.4.1 and 5.4.2) and Security Rules and Procedures (section 9.4.10). Confirm current terms with your acquirer.
These rules matter in disputes too. Visa says a merchant can defend a trial misrepresentation claim by showing the cardholder expressly agreed to future charges at signup and got an electronic notice before the post-trial charge. If you cannot show both, expect that dispute to be hard to win.
Which US Laws Shape Supplement Auto-Renewals?
Card rules are not the only layer. Federal and state auto-renewal laws also set what you must disclose and how customers cancel. Here is where things stand as of October 2026. Have your legal team apply them to your own offers.
- ROSCA is still in force. The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires clear terms, express informed consent before billing and a simple way to cancel online plans.
- The FTC "click to cancel" rule is not in effect. A federal appeals court (Eighth Circuit) vacated the 2024 amendments to the FTC Negative Option Rule in July 2025. The FTC reopened rulemaking in March 2026, so watch for a new proposal. The FTC’s March 2026 explanation confirms that the surviving Negative Option Rule covers prenotification plans. Other negative-option offers may remain subject to ROSCA, the FTC Act, the Telemarketing Sales Rule or state law, depending on the arrangement.
- California tightened its law on July 1, 2025. California AB 2863 requires express consent, online "click to cancel," a yearly reminder, notice 7 to 30 days before a price change, and consent records kept for 3 years or 1 year after the contract ends, whichever is longer.
- Other states have their own auto-renewal laws. Check where your customers live, not only where your business sits.
Why does this matter for chargebacks? The same records that prove compliance also win disputes. A saved consent event, a reminder log and a cancel confirmation are your strongest exhibits for 13.2 and trial claims.
How Do You Build a Cycle-Specific Evidence File?
Give each renewal its own record. Link the subscription ID, billing cycle, order ID, charge ID, amount, currency, shipment and support case. Keep raw timestamps with their time zones next to a clean timeline.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Record | What to keep | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription agreement | Checkout cadence, recurring price, cancel terms and the consent event | What the customer saw and agreed to |
| Disputed renewal | Cycle ID, created order, actual capture and payment account | Which charge the dispute is about |
| Cancel or pause | Request time, channel, scope, reply and effective date | What change was asked for and applied |
| Fulfillment | Warehouse acceptance, release, carrier handoff and delivery or exception | What happened to this shipment |
| Remedy | Refund approval, processor result, amount and reference; replacements kept apart | Whether the promised fix was completed |
This is a suggested source map. Not every subscription app exposes every field, so ask each system owner what records exist and what each status means. "Processed" may mean the order was created, not that the card was charged or the parcel left. Subscription apps such as Recharge and Skio each name these events differently.
Keep a source reference for each exhibit so another reviewer can trace it. Never swap an awkward original timestamp for a tidier one. If two systems disagree, keep the gap and explain it.
How Do Cancellation, Billing and Shipment Cutoffs Interact?
A cancel request can arrive before the charge but after the order exists. It can also arrive after the charge while the parcel can still be stopped. These are different states, and "the plan was active" describes neither one well.
Four events to compare before you respond
Pull a timestamp for each one on the disputed cycle.
Request received
When and where did the customer ask to cancel or pause, and which cycle did it cover?
Payment captured
Which charge moved funds? Keep authorization and capture apart.
Shipment released
Did the warehouse stop the order, and when did the carrier take it?
Remedy completed
Was a refund or replacement only approved, or did it finish?
Show your shipping cutoff clearly, but know that the cutoff alone does not decide the chargeback. The issuer looks at the accepted terms, the actual request and what you did next. A warehouse limit is a fact to explain, not a blanket defense.
This matters in Shopify stores. Shopify's subscription fulfillment guidance treats cancels and refunds as separate actions and notes that the subscription app may need its own step. Test your setup rather than assume a refund stops future renewals. The chargeback prevention before fulfillment guide shows where to hold a risky order.
A portal request sent to a 3PL is not proof the parcel stopped. Record the reply and the result. If the order could not be stopped, keep that exception and the support reply, so no one tells the customer it was stopped when it shipped.
Worked Example: A Cancel Between Renewal and Release
This example is hypothetical. The dates, amounts and IDs are made up to show the method. They are not network time limits or a guess at an issuer decision.
Subscription S-42 renews for a $72 order. The order is created at 08:50 UTC. The customer asks to cancel at 09:05. The card is charged at 09:12, and the warehouse releases the order at 10:30. Support replies at 11:00 but only stops future cycles.
The customer disputes the $72 charge as a canceled recurring payment. Your account screen says "canceled," and tracking later shows delivery. Neither screen explains the key order of events.
Hypothetical $72 renewal: what each timestamp proves
09:05 cancel request
Shows the request came before the charge. Pull its wording and the terms that applied.
09:12 card capture
Identifies the payment. It does not show the cancel was handled correctly.
10:30 warehouse release
Shows a later physical step, not that the request came too late.
11:00 future cycles stopped
Shows one change took effect. Check what happened to the current cycle.
Illustration only. All times UTC. This timeline does not decide entitlement or predict an outcome.
Now pull the actual cancel wording and the terms this subscriber saw. Did they ask to stop the current order, future renewals or both? Did the request come through a working channel? Did your confirmation describe the effect clearly? These questions often surface a merchant error that a generic subscription rebuttal would miss.
If a valid cancel was missed, accept or refund through the processor route and fix the workflow. Our guide on chargeback vs refund decisions helps with that call. If the terms and events support you, describe the disputed cycle precisely. Do not claim delivery proves consent, or that a shipping cutoff voids every later request.
How Do You Match Evidence to Each Dispute Reason?
Canceled recurring payment (Visa 13.2)
Start with the request and its scope. Add the cancel terms shown at checkout, the original consent and the cycle timeline. A support chat often says more than a current "active" badge, because it shows what the customer asked and what you promised. See cancelled subscription chargebacks for the full 13.2 case build.
Payment not recognized or unauthorized
Show the link between the customer and the payment. Clear receipts and a recognizable billing descriptor help when the claim is really confusion. Earlier paid renewals are useful context, but they are not automatic permission for every later charge.
Produit non reçu
Link the disputed order to carrier handoff, address and delivery or a logged exception. A label purchase is not the same as carrier acceptance. Our item not received chargeback guide covers the carrier evidence.
Le produit ne correspond pas à la description
Compare the offer with what you shipped. Keep quantity, formula, label and checkout marketing records, and avoid claims about results you cannot support. Telling the customer to "use it longer" is not evidence. For formula and quality claims, see the item not as described chargeback guide and our skincare quality dispute guide.
Crédit non traité
Separate support approval from processor completion. State the refund amount, date, status, reference and original charge. If a credit was promised but failed, do not present the promise as a completed refund. The double-refund guide covers overlapping remedies, and chargebacks after a refund explains what to submit when money already moved.
How Many Renewal Disputes Can a Supplement Brand Absorb?
Fewer than most teams think. Renewal disputes stack on top of fraud reports in the Visa ratio, and a single bad billing run can push a healthy account over the line.
Visa's VAMP fact sheet lists an excessive-merchant test of at least 1.5% and at least 1,500 counted fraud and dispute events a month in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America/Caribbean. The denominator is settled card-not-present Visa transactions. CEMEA requires at least 2.2%, at least 150 events and at least USD 75,000 in fraud and dispute amount.
These merchant thresholds apply when the acquirer is not already Above Standard or Excessive. Visa’s current VAMP overview separately says programs for Brazil and Chile will be announced later; confirm country and account treatment with your acquirer. Qualifying pre-dispute resolutions and CE3.0-qualified TC40 fraud are excluded subject to data-extract timing. The health and beauty chargeback overview covers the full program detail.
Hypothetical US brand: 120,000 settled Visa CNP transactions a month
Counted fraud reports plus disputes, as a share of settled transactions.
Normal month: 720 fraud reports + 960 disputes
Bad renewal batch adds 200 disputes
VAMP ratio threshold; count also required
Hypothetical figures. 1,680 events / 120,000 = 1.40%; 1,880 / 120,000 = 1.57%. Your acquirer may apply stricter limits.
In this example, one missed cancel sync turns a 1.40% month into 1.57%, above the 1.5% line, with 1,880 events, above the 1,500 floor. Mastercard runs its own program too; see the Mastercard Excessive Chargeback Program guide. The money is real as well. Mastercard projects global chargeback costs will rise from $36.9 billion in 2026 to $46.1 billion in 2029.
$36.9B Global chargeback cost in 2026 | $46.1B Projected cost in 2029 | 286M Chargebacks projected for 2026 | 1.5% VAMP ratio in the listed regions; also requires 1,500 events |

How Do You Prevent the Next Supplement Renewal Dispute?
Prevent disputes by removing confusion, not by making cancel harder. Hard cancel flows can break ROSCA, state law and network rules, and they push customers to their bank. For more tactics, see how subscription brands prevent forgot-to-cancel chargebacks.
Supplement renewal prevention checklist
✓ Show the recurring price, cadence and cancel route next to the checkout button.
✓ Save the exact offer and terms version for each order. Never overwrite it later.
✓ Send a reminder with the amount, date and a cancel link before a trial converts or terms change.
✓ Say in every cancel confirmation which plans and cycles stop, and when.
✓ Use a descriptor customers recognize, and add "trial" on the first post-trial charge for Visa.
✓ Sync cancels to billing and the 3PL before the next order is created.
✓ Use chargeback alerts to refund a confused renewal before it becomes a dispute.
For US merchandise orders, the FTC's shipping-rule business guide explains your duties when an order cannot ship on time, including delay consent or refunds in some cases. A subscription label is not an exception to that rule.
How Should You Reconcile the Payment Before Another Refund?
Map each money movement on its own. A renewal charge, a partial refund, a pending dispute debit and a replacement shipment are different events. A free replacement may fix a product issue without reversing the card payment, and store credit is not a card refund.
Before you refund during an open dispute, check whether an alert, an earlier credit or the dispute itself already moved the money.
Support tools do not always see every movement. Finance should know the exposure left on the original payment. Use the partial-chargeback guide when only part of a payment is disputed. Brands that ship curated kits with item-level issues should also read our beauty box chargeback guide.
Who Owns Each Step, and What Should You Measure?
Assign one case owner who can see billing, support and fulfillment records. Then give each type of record a named owner.
Give each exception a named owner
Billing owner
Terms version, renewal charge and cancel scope.
Fulfillment owner
Stop request, release result, tracking and exceptions.
Support owner
Customer claim, reply and promised fix.
Finance and dispute owners
Finished credits, money still at risk, evidence review and case deadline.
Suggested roles. Map them to your real team.
Track these numbers each month, and state the base for each one:
- Cancels applied before the next affected action
- Cases with a complete cycle-to-payment match
- Refunds completed after approval
- Responses sent before the case deadline
Compare renewal disputes by cycle, SKU, offer version and reason. Keep prevented cases, accepted losses and won cases apart. Fewer support tickets do not prove customers stopped having cancel problems. Benchmarks in our chargeback trends by industry report help you set a baseline.
Supplement Subscription Chargeback Questions Merchants Ask
Can a customer charge back a supplement subscription renewal?
Yes. A customer can dispute a supplement subscription renewal with their card issuer, most often as a cancelled recurring transaction (Visa 13.2) or under Mastercard 4853. The merchant can respond with the accepted terms, the cancel history and the timeline for that specific renewal.
What is chargeback reason code 13.2?
Visa reason code 13.2 is "Cancelled Recurring Transaction." The cardholder says they were billed for a recurring payment after cancelling or withdrawing permission. Merchants answer it with the agreed cancel terms, the request record and proof of when the charge happened relative to the cancel.
Is negative option billing illegal?
Negative option billing is not illegal in the US, but it is regulated. ROSCA requires clear terms, express informed consent and a simple cancel method for online plans, and states such as California add their own auto-renewal rules. Visa and Mastercard also set trial and subscription rules for merchants.
What is the FTC negative option rule?
Negative-option marketing treats silence or inaction as acceptance, but the surviving FTC Negative Option Rule specifically covers prenotification plans. The broader 2024 "click to cancel" amendments were vacated in July 2025; the FTC reopened rulemaking in March 2026. Other recurring offers may still be governed by ROSCA, the FTC Act, the Telemarketing Sales Rule and state laws, as applicable.
Who loses money on a supplement subscription chargeback?
The merchant usually bears the loss on a supplement subscription chargeback. The issuer pulls the funds back through the acquirer, and the merchant pays the product, shipping and dispute fee unless it wins the case. Winning reverses the amount, but the fee often stays.

Automate a Supplement Renewal Workflow You Can Trace
Use automation to gather records and route exceptions while keeping track of who supplied each fact. When you assess a tool, ask to see a canceled renewal, a partly refunded order and an order shipped after a cancel request, not only a clean first purchase. Subscription chargeback recovery works best when each renewal is already a traceable record.
Chargeflow's health and beauty solution is a good starting point for recurring-product brands, and Chargeflow Automation builds and submits the evidence for each dispute. Chargeflow has recovered $200M+ for merchants. Confirm your processor, subscription data access and fulfillment coverage when you set it up.
Source review: October 29, 2026. Worksheets are original frameworks. All case IDs, amounts and timelines are hypothetical; no customer outcome or recovery forecast is implied. Check the current case, provider and legal requirements before you submit.
