En resumen:
- Checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid for the information, shipping, and payment steps.
- Apps on those core checkout pages and the Checkout Branding API are Plus-only, while some checkout editor and post-purchase capabilities work on lower plans.
- Public apps using Shopify Functions can work across plans; custom apps containing Functions are Plus-only.
- Each added field or removed step changes fraud exposure, so pair checkout changes with screening that runs after payment and adds nothing to checkout load time.
Shopify Plus checkout customization works through checkout extensibility, not by editing checkout code. You set branding with the Checkout Branding API, add fields and content with checkout UI extensions, and control discounts, shipping, and payment logic with Shopify Functions. The old checkout.liquid file is now unsupported for the information, shipping, and payment steps.
This guide covers what you can change, how Plus differs from standard Shopify, the technical limits on every extension, how to test a customization before it goes live, and the fraud trade-off most articles skip. It is part of our Shopify Plus guide and is written for developers planning a build and merchants deciding if they need Plus.

What You Can Customize on Shopify Plus Checkout
On Shopify Plus checkout, you can customize four things: branding, UI content and fields, checkout logic, and the page flow. You do this through checkout extensibility, Shopify's app- and API-based framework for editing checkout safely.
In plain terms, the checkout is the final set of screens where a shopper enters their address, picks shipping, and pays. Customizing it means shaping those screens to match your brand and business rules. On Plus, you get far more room to do that than on standard plans.
Checkout extensibility means you change the checkout with approved apps and APIs instead of editing raw checkout code. Shopify controls and maintains those plug-in points, so your changes survive platform updates and stay compliant. Editing raw code used to break checkouts during updates.
Here's what each tool lets you do:
Choose by checkout surface and behavior
Which customization tool fits the job?
Advanced branding
Use the Checkout Branding API for advanced Plus branding. Basic colors, fonts and logos can also be adjusted in the checkout editor on lower plans.
Checkout UI extensions
Add supported fields, content and UI with checkout UI extensions. Placement on information, shipping and payment steps requires Plus; thank-you and order-status extensions are available on lower plans.
Backend rules
Use Shopify Functions for discounts, delivery and payment customizations. Supported operations depend on the payment method and checkout surface, with additional Shop Pay restrictions.
One-page checkout
Shopify's default checkout already runs on a single page across all plans. On Plus you can reshape that page with extensions and Functions instead of only restyling it.
Confirm the plan, extension target and payment-method limits before scoping a build. Public-app Functions and custom-app Functions have different plan eligibility.
Most stores combine these tools rather than picking one. You might use branding for look and feel, UI extensions to add a field, and Functions to control payment rules. Together they cover almost every checkout change a growing brand needs.
The End of checkout.liquid
checkout.liquid was the Plus-only file that let developers edit checkout code directly. It is now unsupported for the Information, Shipping, and Payment checkout steps, per Shopify's checkout.liquid deprecation notice.
The sunset happened in stages, and the last stage landed in August 2026:
| Checkout surface | Legacy status | What replaces it |
|---|---|---|
| Information, shipping, and payment steps (Plus) | checkout.liquid unsupported | Checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions, Checkout Branding API |
| Thank you and order status pages (Plus) | checkout.liquid and script tags sunset August 28, 2025 | Checkout UI extensions for the thank you and order status targets |
| Thank you and order status pages (non-Plus) | Script tags sunset August 26, 2026 | Web pixel app extensions and UI extensions |
Plan new builds around apps and APIs, not raw code. If a store still has script tags on its order status page, they stopped firing this summer, which is worth checking before you trust your conversion or attribution numbers.
For developers, this is a hard cutoff, not a warning. Old themes that still reference the file will not render custom checkout logic. If you inherited a legacy store, audit it now and rebuild any custom steps as extensions or Functions before they silently stop working.
Shopify Plus Checkout vs. Standard Shopify Checkout
Only Plus opens the advanced checkout tools; every Shopify plan lets you edit basic checkout appearance. Knowing where the line sits helps you decide whether an upgrade is worth it.
Shopify's plan comparison shows the split clearly. Plus enables UI extensions on the information, shipping, and payment pages, plus custom apps built with Shopify Functions. Both are unavailable on non-Plus plans.
| Capacidad | Standard Shopify | Shopify Además |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout editor settings (logo, colors, fonts) | Sí | Sí |
| Checkout Branding API (advanced styling) | No | Sí |
| UI extensions on information, shipping, and payment pages | No | Sí |
| UI extensions on thank you and order status pages | Sí | Sí |
| Post-purchase and web pixel app extensions | Sí | Sí |
| Public apps built with Shopify Functions | Sí | Sí |
| Custom apps built with Shopify Functions | No | Sí |
| Payment customizations on credit card fields (US and Canada) | No, non-credit-card methods only | Sí |
If you need any row marked "No" under standard, Plus is the plan that unlocks it. Standard Shopify still lets you adjust logos, colors, and basic settings from the checkout editor, run post-purchase offers, and install public Functions apps. What it locks away is the deeper control: custom fields on the core checkout steps, your own Functions logic, and branding at the API level.
The question is how much control you need. A simple store may never outgrow standard settings. A high-volume or B2B store usually will, and that's when Plus pays off.
Price is part of the math too. Shopify Plus pricing runs far above standard plans, so the extra checkout control should map to a clear revenue or operations gain. If custom fields, net terms, or advanced branding drive real value, the upgrade earns its keep.
Technical Limits Every Checkout Extension Must Respect
Shopify's checkout UI extensions reference sets hard limits on what a customization can do, and most build estimates that blow up do so because nobody checked them first.
| Limit | Regla | Por qué es importante |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions per location | Up to three extensions per block target in the checkout editor | Plan which messages, fields, and upsells earn a slot; the fourth idea has to go elsewhere |
| Bundle size | Compiled extension bundle cannot exceed 64 KB | Large libraries and embedded assets fail the build; keep logic lean and fetch data instead |
| Limitación de velocidad | Extensions that make excessive changes are rate limited for the rest of that buyer session | Batch updates together instead of firing them one by one |
| Network access | Calls to external services require the network access capability | Every external call adds latency to the page where shoppers decide to pay |
| API version | Set the latest stable api_version in the extension config | Shopify CLI blocks new deploys to versions older than 12 months, and old versions eventually stop being supported |
If you do not have in-house developers, a Shopify Plus agency can build and test these extensions against the limits above, and our comparison of Shopify Plus development and design agencies covers 15 of them.
None of these limits apply to apps that run after checkout. That matters for the fraud discussion below: screening that happens post-purchase adds nothing to your bundle and nothing to checkout load time.
Common Checkout Customization Use Cases
Most Shopify Plus checkout projects fall into five use cases, built to lift revenue, serve business buyers, or reward loyal shoppers. Several of them add a data field or remove a step, and both change your fraud exposure.
Set an outcome for each change
Five checkout projects to test
Post-purchase offers
Test an eligible one-click add-on after payment without adding steps to the main checkout.
Useful custom fields
Capture gift messages, delivery instructions, or a B2B purchase-order number at checkout.
Loyalty integration
Let shoppers see or redeem supported rewards at checkout, then measure completion and repeat purchases.
B2B payment rules
Use Shopify Functions to set net terms for B2B buyers and control which payment methods each buyer sees.
Less friction
Remove unnecessary friction and order supported payment options while preserving required payment, order and risk signals.
Measure conversion, order value and downstream disputes together. An uplift is a test result, not a guaranteed property of customization.
Each of these wins is real, and each one shifts your risk profile. A gift-message field adds a place for bad actors to probe, and a removed step means one less checkpoint. Keep that link between customization and risk in mind as you read the next section.
The Fraud Trade-Off of Custom Checkouts
Every customization decision is also a fraud decision. Each custom field you add or friction point you remove can open a gap that fraudsters and refund abusers exploit.
Most guides optimize checkout for speed and conversion alone, then act surprised when Shopify chargebacks climb. Friendly fraud, where a real buyer disputes a legitimate charge, thrives when checkout collects less proof of who placed the order.
Speed sells, and the pressure to remove friction is real. Baymard Institute's cart abandonment research shows why checkout teams chase every removed click, and why the same data should make fraud teams nervous.
70.22% Average cart abandonment rate across 50 studies | 17% US shoppers who abandoned because checkout was too long or complicated | 35.26% Conversion lift a large ecommerce site can gain from better checkout design | $5.13 Total cost to US merchants per $1 of direct fraud loss |
Sources: Baymard Institute cart abandonment research (updated September 2025); LexisNexis Risk Solutions, 2026 True Cost of Fraud Study.
But stripping friction has a cost. ACI Worldwide reports that refund abuse and friendly fraud have surged, driven by frictionless eCommerce. ACI forecast a 25% rise in friendly fraud between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday 2025.
The trade-off cuts both ways. In its 2026 True Cost of Fraud Study, LexisNexis Risk Solutions found that more than half of US retailers and ecommerce companies saw customer churn rise because of their own anti-fraud measures. Friction at checkout loses good customers; no friction at all loses the goods.
The fix is not "remove all friction." It's deliberate design paired with post-checkout fraud screening.
Chargeflow Prevent screens every order after checkout, before you ship. It scores each order and recommends approve, verify, or cancel, so it's fraud screening that never touches checkout, your extension bundle, or your page speed. It installs through Chargeflow's Shopify app without a single checkout extension. Pair it with chargeback alerts to resolve disputes before they post as chargebacks, and with automated chargeback recovery for the ones that still land.
Watch these common fraud gaps as you customize:
- Guest checkout: No account means less identity signal, which makes fraudulent orders easier to hide.
- Removed CVV or AVS checks: Dropping card verification speeds checkout but weakens your first line of defense.
- Express and one-click payments: Fewer steps mean fewer chances to catch a stolen card before purchase.
- Custom fields that skip review: Extra inputs like PO numbers or gift notes can bypass manual review rules.
Because screening happens after payment, legitimate buyers are not slowed by extra verification, and risky orders get flagged before you ship and lose the goods.
Fraud and customer confusion can increase disputes even when checkout conversion improves. Shopify’s Network Dispute Resolution Program can automatically enroll stores with an NDRP-inclusive chargeback rate of 1.5% or higher over the last 90 days, subject to minimum volume and broader risk factors. Card-network chargeback thresholds use their own definitions and criteria. Evaluate checkout results against the applicable measures, using Shopify’s current NDRP guidance.

How to Test a Checkout Customization Before It Goes Live
A checkout change touches revenue, compliance, and risk at the same time, so test it against all six dimensions below rather than conversion alone. Run the full pass on a development store, then again on production with a small traffic share.
| Prueba | What to check | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion | A/B test the new flow against the current checkout with a holdout group | Completed checkout rate holds or improves, with no drop in average order value |
| Accessibility | Keyboard navigation, focus order, and screen reader labels on every new field and block | Every custom element is reachable and labeled without a mouse |
| Velocidad | Compiled bundle size and any external calls made during checkout | Bundle stays under 64 KB and no blocking network request runs on the payment step |
| Payment behavior | Functions rules per market, currency, and payment method, including express wallets | Only the intended methods are hidden, renamed, or reordered, and card fields still validate |
| Análisis | Web pixel events on the thank you and order status pages | Orders attribute correctly and no event fires twice |
| Fraud signals | AVS and CVV enforcement, custom-field data reaching your review queue, and test orders through post-checkout screening | Every new order path still gets scored before fulfillment |
The fraud row is the one most teams skip, and skipping it is one of the most common chargeback mistakes Shopify merchants make. Fold it into the same QA sheet as the others and it costs an hour; discover it after launch and it costs a quarter of disputes. If you sell in several markets, repeat the payment-behavior test in each one; our guide to Shopify Markets and expansion stores explains how they differ. Preguntas frecuentes
Can You Customize the Checkout on Shopify Plus?
Yes, Shopify Plus lets you customize checkout through branding, UI extensions, and Shopify Functions, all built on checkout extensibility. Your store must be on the Plus plan, so if you are coming from another platform, start with our guide to migrating to Shopify Plus.
Is checkout.liquid Still Available on Shopify Plus?
No. checkout.liquid is unsupported for the information, shipping, and payment steps, and it was sunset for the thank you and order status pages on August 28, 2025. New builds use checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions, and the Checkout Branding API instead.
What Is the Difference Between checkout UI Extensions and Shopify Functions?
Checkout UI extensions control what buyers see and enter, while Shopify Functions control checkout logic and rules. Extensions handle fields, banners, and content; Functions handle discounts, shipping, and payment behavior.
Which Checkout Customizations Work Without Shopify Plus?
Every plan gets the checkout editor for logos, colors, and fonts, UI extensions on the thank you and order status pages, post-purchase and web pixel app extensions, and public apps built with Shopify Functions. Extensions on the information, shipping, and payment steps, custom Functions apps, and the Checkout Branding API need Plus.
How Do You Add Custom Fields to Shopify Checkout?
On Shopify Plus, you add a custom field with a checkout UI extension placed on the information, shipping, or payment step in the checkout editor. Other plans can use extensions only on the thank you and order status pages, so a field collected before payment needs Plus. Feed the new field's data into your fraud review rules so it does not bypass them.
Does Shopify Plus Have One-Page Checkout?
Yes, Shopify Plus uses Shopify's one-page checkout, which shows information, shipping, and payment on a single screen to reduce steps. This shorter flow can lift conversion, but it also removes friction that once helped catch fraud.
Does Customizing Checkout Increase Fraud Risk?
It can, because every removed step or added field changes how easily fraud slips through your checkout. Pair conversion changes with post-checkout screening so you keep a fast checkout without inviting fraud.
