TL;DR:
- A partial refund settles the returned item, not the dispute, unless it matches the disputed amount.
- Klarna inquiries escalate after 21 days when the refund falls short, and Stripe blocks Klarna refunds after escalation.
- Afterpay takes a partial refund from the last installment first; Affirm applies it to the final monthly bill.
- Contest the unrefunded balance with item-level proof: order lines, return receipt and refund reference.
- Track refund, case and payout as three separate records so returned funds are never counted twice.
A BNPL partial refund dispute is a buy now, pay later case where you credit only part of an order, such as one returned item, while the shopper's dispute is still open. The refund changes the shopper's payment plan. It does not always close the case.
Get the order of steps wrong and you can pay twice: once as a refund and again as a lost dispute. Three provider rules show why:
- Klarna resolves an inquiry only when your refund matches the disputed amount.
- Afterpay closes a dispute as refunded only when the refund equals or exceeds the dispute amount.
- Affirm asks you to contact its resolutions team before refunding any other amount.
Why a Partial Refund Leaves the Dispute Open
The case has its own amount. Your refund has its own amount. The provider closes the case only when the two line up, or when a decision is made.
Partial returns are common. The CFPB found that 13.7% of individual BNPL loans in 2021 had at least some part of the order returned, up from 12.2% in 2020. The same study counted 180 million loans worth over $24 billion from five lenders in 2021. More current figures sit in our BNPL statistics.
13.7% BNPL loans in 2021 with part of the order returned (CFPB) | 180M BNPL loans from five lenders in 2021 (CFPB) | $24B+ Value of those 2021 loans (CFPB) |
So a shopper who returns one item and disputes the whole order is a normal case, not a rare one. You need a rule for it before it happens.

Partial Refund Rules by BNPL Provider
Each provider handles a partial credit on an open case in its own way. Check the route first. If you still need to compare BNPL providers on fees and dispute handling, start there.
| Aanbieder | Does a partial refund close the open case? | Where the refund lands in the shopper's plan | Your response window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klarna | Only if the refund equals the disputed amount. A partial refund on a full-amount dispute does not resolve the inquiry. | Allocated to the invoice of the matching capture, if order line references match. | 21 days to resolve before Klarna steps in; 14 days for the first request |
| Afterpay | Only if the refund is equal to or greater than the dispute amount. | Taken from the 4th installment first, then the 3rd, and so on. | 13 days to submit evidence; Afterpay then has 30 days to decide |
| Affirm | Affirm asks you to email its resolutions team before refunding an amount other than the disputed amount. | Applied to the final monthly bill first. Payment amounts stay the same. | Typically 15 days from notice |
| Sezzle | You can issue a full or partial refund from the dispute window. Sezzle then decides if the case can close. | Sezzle adjusts the repayment plan for you. | Shown in the dispute portal |
| BNPL virtual card | Card network rules apply. Do not refund a charge that already has a chargeback. | Handled by the BNPL provider, not your processor. | Set by the card network and your processor |

Klarna: Match the Disputed Amount or Prepare Evidence
Klarna through Stripe spells out the partial case. Stripe's Klarna dispute guide says a partial refund resolves a partial dispute when the amounts match. If the dispute covers the whole order, a partial refund for one item will not resolve it.
- The inquiry escalates to a chargeback 21 days after the return was registered.
- You cannot refund once the inquiry escalates.
- You get 12 days to submit evidence, or 5 days for fraud claims, and only one round.
- Klarna pauses the shopper's payments while the case is open.
Klarna's own docs add two limits. If you choose to adjust the order, you must refund within 96 hours or Klarna performs an automatic chargeback. Klarna also limits disputes to three per order, with exceptions such as unauthorized purchases. For the full Klarna chargeback process and fees, see our Klarna chargeback guide.
Afterpay: Refund the Item, Then Contest the Rest
Afterpay marks a dispute as refunded only when the refund is equal to or greater than the dispute amount. A smaller refund leaves the case open, so contest the balance with evidence. Afterpay merchant fees are not returned when you refund. Our guide to Afterpay chargebacks covers the full response.
Affirm: Ask Before You Send an Off-Amount Refund
Affirm refunds cannot be reversed. For any refund that differs from the disputed amount, Affirm tells merchants to contact resolutions@affirm.com first. Customers do not pay while the dispute is open. Our Affirm disputes guide lists the five dispute categories and the evidence each one needs.
Sezzle: Refund From the Dispute Window
Sezzle recommends issuing the refund from the dispute window so the wrong order is not refunded. Its return guidance tells merchants to refund as though the shopper paid in full, and Sezzle adjusts the plan. Refunds cannot be changed once they start processing.
BNPL Virtual Cards: Treat It as a Card Dispute
Some shoppers pay with a BNPL virtual card. Your store sees a normal card payment, so disputes arrive as card chargebacks. Do not refund on top of an open chargeback. Stripe's refund docs warn that a refund pending when the charge is disputed can reimburse the customer twice. Stripe recommends accepting or challenging the dispute instead.
Worked Example: An $80 Return Against a $240 Dispute
Hypothetical example. No tax, shipping or discounts. Order O-910 holds a $120 jacket, $80 shoes and a $40 accessory. All $240 was captured on a pay-in-4 plan of four $60 payments. The shopper returns the shoes and opens a dispute for the full $240.
$240 Captured and disputed | $80 Returned item refunded | $160 Still contested after the refund |
The $160 is arithmetic, not a settled balance. It is the part of the case your refund did not cover. Here is how the same $80 refund plays out on each route:
| Route | What the $80 refund does | What happens to the $160 |
|---|---|---|
| Klarna (via Stripe) | Credits the shoes. The full-amount inquiry stays open. | Escalates to a chargeback after 21 days. Submit evidence that only the shoes came back and were refunded. |
| Afterpay | Cuts the 4th payment from $60 to $0 and the 3rd from $60 to $40. | Case stays open because $80 is below $240. Contest with evidence within 13 days. |
| Affirm | Lands on the final monthly bill first. | Email Affirm resolutions before sending the $80, since it differs from the $240 disputed. |
| Sezzle | Sent from the dispute window, tied to O-910. | Sezzle reviews the case. Upload the return record and delivery proof for the kept items. |
Stripe's Klarna guide uses this exact situation as its evidence example: only one item was returned and the order was already partially refunded. Build that statement into your response.

Allocate the Refund to the Right Item and Capture
A partial refund is only as strong as its link to one item and one capture. Keep these records joined before you send any credit:
| Record | Fact to keep | What goes wrong without it |
|---|---|---|
| Original purchase | Item lines, quantities and price after discounts | Later edits hide the amount the shopper actually paid |
| Capture | Amount and the items it covered | One order can have several captures |
| Return | Item received and the receipt date | A return label gets mistaken for a received return |
| Terugbetaling | Reference, amount, status and original payment | A promised refund gets mistaken for a completed one |
| Geschil | Case ID, reason, amount and stage | The case amount rarely equals the returned item amount |
| Settlement | Actual payout entries and direction | Plan changes get mistaken for cash movement |
Klarna shows why this matters. Its refund allocation rules need the refund's order line references to match the capture. The order lines must sum to the refund, and the refund cannot exceed that capture. If not, Klarna accepts the refund but cannot allocate it to the right invoice.
Discounts. Two $100 items sold with a $20 order discount total $180. If your invoice splits the discount evenly, each item is worth $90. Refund $90 for one return, not $100. Use your real invoice split. Never rebuild a more favorable one after the return.
Decide: Refund the Item, Refund the Case or Fight
Give one person ownership of each case. That person checks what has already been approved, sent and completed before any money moves.
Before you send a partial refund on an open BNPL case
- Read the case amount and reason. Is the shopper disputing one item or the whole order?
- Compare it with what came back. Match each returned item to its capture and price.
- If the amounts match, refund inside the window. On Klarna and Afterpay, a matching refund closes the case without a fight.
- If the case is larger, refund the item and contest the rest. Send evidence for the kept items before the deadline.
- Check the provider rule first. Affirm wants contact before an off-amount refund. Klarna blocks refunds after escalation.
- Save the refund reference. Then check the case and the payout as separate steps.
Rules summarized from Klarna, Stripe, Afterpay, Affirm and Sezzle merchant docs listed above.
A shopper who keeps two of three items and disputes the full order may be filing in error. Others may be testing your return process. Treat repeat patterns as possible friendly fraud or refund abuse, and keep the records that show it.

Build Evidence for the Unrefunded Balance
Lead your response with the numbers. State the items, the amount refunded, the refund status and the amount still in dispute. Then attach focused exhibits:
- The original order with item lines and prices
- The return record showing which item came back and when
- The refund confirmation with its reference and amount
- Delivery proof for the items the shopper kept
- Messages where the shopper confirmed the partial return
Do not overstate. If a second return was approved or an item went missing, say so. Our chargeback evidence source map shows which system holds each record.
Keep Plan Changes Separate From Settlement
The shopper's installment plan and your payout report track different money. If a shopper has paid only one installment, still refund the full item value. The provider adjusts the plan.
Fees follow their own rules. Afterpay keeps its merchant fee on a refund. Stripe does not return processing fees on refunds. Klarna says refunds sent after escalation, or straight to the customer, can carry a dispute fee.
Never count the same returned funds as both a refund and a recovered dispute. That mistake hides real losses and is how double refund chargebacks slip through. If a chargeback after a refund still lands, match it to the refund reference before you respond. Our chargeback reconciliation guide covers the month-end match.
Provider Policy Now Sets the Rules in the US
In May 2024, the CFPB issued an interpretive rule treating BNPL lenders like card issuers. Lenders had to investigate disputes, credit refunds for returns and pause payments during an investigation.
On May 12, 2025, the CFPB withdrew that rule. Provider merchant terms now drive how US partial refund disputes play out. That is why the provider table above matters more than any general BNPL rule. Recheck each provider's docs before you rely on a deadline.
Close Partial Refund Cases on One Ledger
Partial refund disputes are won on records, not arguments. Tie each refund to one item and one capture. Check the provider rule before money moves. Then contest only the balance your refund did not cover.
Chargeflow Automation handles BNPL inquiries and disputes end to end. It gathers order, return and refund data, builds the evidence and submits it on time, backed by a 4X ROI guarantee.

BNPL Partial Refund FAQs
Does a partial refund close a BNPL dispute?
A partial refund closes a BNPL dispute only when it matches the disputed amount. Klarna resolves an inquiry when the refund equals the disputed amount. Afterpay closes a case as refunded when the refund is equal to or greater than the dispute amount. A smaller refund leaves the rest of the dispute open.
Why does an Afterpay partial refund look smaller to the shopper?
An Afterpay partial refund is taken from the last installment first, then the one before it. A shopper with payments still due sees those payments shrink instead of cash back. Afterpay cannot override the amount the merchant refunds, so shoppers are sent back to the merchant with questions.
How does a partial refund work with Affirm?
An Affirm partial refund is applied to the final monthly bill first, and payment amounts stay the same. Affirm says refunds reach the original payment method within 3 to 10 business days. During a dispute, Affirm asks merchants to contact its resolutions team before refunding another amount. See Klarna vs Affirm for how the two plans differ.
Can a shopper still dispute a BNPL purchase after a partial refund?
Yes. A partial refund does not stop a shopper from disputing the rest of a BNPL order. Klarna allows up to three disputes per order, and the first must be opened within 180 days of capture. Keep the refund reference and return record so you can answer a second case quickly.
Who handles a BNPL refund issue, the merchant or the provider?
The merchant issues a BNPL refund, and the provider applies it to the shopper's plan. Afterpay, for example, only processes refunds on the merchant's instruction. If a shopper says a refund is missing, check your refund status and reference before the case escalates.
