En bref :

  • Start with Shopify Payments if your store qualifies. Compare approved alternatives if your country or products are not supported.
  • PayPal and Klarna are added payment methods with regional rules. Square is not a native Shopify online gateway.
  • Compare total cost: processing, Shopify fees, refunds, disputes, FX, and gateway charges. Check reserves separately for cash-flow impact.
  • Handle Shopify Payments disputes in Shopify admin. Direct Stripe and PayPal fees do not automatically apply to that route.
  • Confirm product approval, then test checkout, refunds, and payouts before switching. Get the terms in writing.

Start with Shopify Payments if your country and products qualify. It keeps payments in Shopify and avoids its third-party transaction fee. Add PayPal or Klarna where supported. If you need another processor, check your store’s approved options first. Standalone Stripe and Square are not universal Shopify checkout choices.

This guide compares eight commonly considered options by fit, cost, payouts, and dispute handling. Prices and support were checked on November 3, 2026. US examples are labeled; your country, plan, card type, and contract can change the terms.

What Is a Payment Processor for Shopify?

A Shopify payment processor helps you take payments and receive funds. A payment service provider may bundle the processor, payment gateway, and merchant account. You still need to check which parts work with Shopify.

  • Collect payment details. The gateway sends the buyer’s details securely from checkout.
  • Request approval. The processor routes the request through the card network. The issuing bank approves or declines it.
  • Capture the sale. An approved payment can then be captured. Authorization alone does not mean you have received funds.
  • Receive the payout. Funds reach your bank after processing, fees, and any holds. The payout schedule depends on your account.

A smooth checkout matters, but so does what happens after the sale. Compare refunds, payouts, and disputes before you choose.

Critères à prendre en compte lors du choix d'un prestataire de services de paiement pour Shopify

Check these six points before comparing headline rates. A good price is useful only if the provider supports your store.

Confirm Your Shopify Integration

Open Settings > Payments in your store. Compare the options with Shopify’s country directory. Ask for the exact payment app or gateway name. An inventory sync app does not prove a provider can process your online checkout.

Keep Checkout Secure and Simple

Baymard’s checkout security research shows why trust matters at payment. Its current US cart-abandonment data reports that 17% of shoppers cited a long or complex checkout. Test checkout on mobile, including failed payments and authentication steps.

Separate Merchant Eligibility From Buyer Reach

A provider may serve buyers worldwide but accept stores from just a few countries. Check where your business is based and banks. Ask which goods you can sell and which payout currencies you can use. Follow cross border payment trends as you plan new markets.

Test the Payment Methods You Need

List your required cards, wallets, local methods, and subscription flows. Check each one in the Shopify integration. A feature on the provider’s main website may not work through its Shopify app.

Get the Full Fee Schedule

Ask for processing, gateway, monthly, refund, dispute, currency conversion, and exit fees. Add any Shopify third-party transaction fee. Compare a month of your own sales, including card mix and order size. A credit card processing fee calculator compares that month across processors.

Check Payouts and Holds

Ask when your first payout arrives and how later payouts work. Confirm weekend delays, reserve terms, and refund funding. Match each test order to the fee and payout report before you go live.

Les meilleurs prestataires de services de paiement pour Shopify

Use this shortlist to rule out poor fits first. Some options handle your core card payments. Others add ways to pay or serve a separate shop. We checked the providers’ published terms and setup guides. We did not test each service firsthand.

SquareSeparate POS Option

Do not treat Square or an inventory sync app as a native Shopify online payment gateway.

Shopify Paiements

Shopify Payments is the built-in option for eligible stores. It keeps payment records, refunds, and payouts in Shopify. Shop Pay adds a saved-checkout option for buyers.

US pricing: Standard online card rates start at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic. Grow lists 2.7% + 30¢; Advanced lists 2.5% + 30¢. Premium and international cards can cost more. Check Shopify’s current pricing and your account before comparing quotes.

  • Good fit: You qualify and want payments managed within your store.
  • Tradeoff: Country, product, and account rules still apply. You must complete setup and verification.
  • Check: Your card mix, payout schedule, refund terms, and any reserve. A Shopify subscription is still required.

Stripe

Stripe offers payment tools and APIs. You cannot add its direct account to every Shopify store. Shopify’s gateway rules say standalone Stripe is unavailable where Shopify Payments is supported. Selling goods that Shopify Payments excludes does not unlock Stripe in those regions.

If Stripe appears for your store’s country, confirm the exact integration and permitted products. Stripe’s own tools do not all become available inside Shopify checkout.

  • Good fit: Your store is eligible for a supported direct Stripe route.
  • Tradeoff: Direct Stripe pricing and dispute terms differ from Shopify Payments.
  • Check: Gateway availability, Shopify’s extra fees, payout timing, and support ownership.

Stripe’s role in Shopify’s infrastructure is documented in its Shopify Tap to Pay case study. That partnership does not mean you manage Shopify Payments through a separate Stripe account.

PayPal

PayPal can add a familiar wallet option. Its Q2 2026 earnings release reported 439 million active accounts at June 30, 2026. See our PayPal statistics guide for context. Reach alone does not prove it will improve your store’s conversion.

US stores using Shopify Payments: PayPal Wallet keeps payments, payouts, refunds, and disputes in Shopify admin. It requires the latest Shopify Checkout. Venmo is included for eligible US buyers. Elsewhere, check Shopify’s PayPal setup guidance for your region’s supported route.

PayPal reported over 100 million Venmo active accounts for 2025 on its Q4 2025 earnings call.

PayPal’s February 2023 US survey of buyers at large merchants found Pay Later purchases have a higher average order value than standard PayPal purchases. PayPal commissioned the Nielsen survey. Treat any lift for your store as a hypothesis to test.

  • Good fit: Your customers want PayPal or a supported Venmo option.
  • Tradeoff: Wallet and Express have different account and dispute workflows. Older Express orders still need the old account.
  • Check: Method-specific fees, refund limits, and how existing subscriptions move.

Braintree and PayPal Wallet use different setups. If you take recurring payments, test the full cycle before you switch. Start a plan, renew it, check a failed charge, and cancel it.

Klarna

Klarna adds buy now, pay later options. Through Shopify Payments, it is available in listed European countries. Your store’s region, the buyer’s location, and currency determine which options appear. It is an added method, not a replacement for your full payment setup.

Eligible new accounts may have Klarna enabled by default. Other stores need approval. Check Shopify’s Klarna guidance before activation. For this route, captured funds join your Shopify Payments payout; the buyer pays Klarna under their selected plan.

  • Good fit: Eligible buyers want to spread the cost of an order.
  • Tradeoff: Processing fees are not returned when you refund a Klarna payment through Shopify Payments.
  • Check: Capture settings, payment status before shipment, and dispute notices in Shopify admin. Klarna decides dispute outcomes.

Square

Square's payment solution supports its own online and in-person tools. It should not be presented as a native Shopify online gateway. Square’s own comparison says it does not offer a Shopify integration.

A third-party app may sync stock or orders. That is different from routing Shopify checkout payments through Square. If you already use Square in a shop, confirm how separate sales, refunds, and stock will be reconciled.

  • Good fit: You want to assess a separate retail POS setup. Square’s Free plan pricing applies to its own service.
  • Tradeoff: A separate POS creates another payment and refund record.
  • Check: The exact sync app, support owner, and reporting workflow. Do not assume it adds Square to Shopify checkout.

Données sur les lignes de paiement

Payline Data serves stores that sell online and in person. Ask for a quote and proof of how it works with Shopify. Its public product page does not show a current Shopify checkout route for every store.

  • Good fit: You want a merchant-services quote and help confirming a supported gateway.
  • Tradeoff: A sales quote needs more detail than a headline markup.
  • Check: Ask for the exact Shopify gateway, underwriting approval, all monthly fees, and exit terms.

If quoted interchange-plus pricing, separate card-network costs from the provider’s markup. Ask about gateway, refund, and dispute charges too. Compare the full quote with your own card mix; an old published rate is not your contract.

Maverick Payments

Maverick Payments offers payment tools through its platform and partners. If you work in high-risk verticals, ask whether it accepts your goods and sales model. It must approve your own store.

  • Good fit: You need a provider to assess your business and propose a supported route.
  • Tradeoff: We could not verify a universal Shopify integration or fee schedule from its public materials.
  • Check: Obtain the gateway name, processing agreement, dispute fee, reserve terms, and cancellation costs in writing.

Do not sign based on a promise that “Shopify works.” Ask the provider to show the payment app and a test order. Confirm who handles checkout faults, payouts, and disputes.

Worldpay

Worldpay publishes a Shopify payment app guide. Confirm which Worldpay product and plugin your contract uses. The Access Worldpay guide lists limits on digital wallets and saved cards. Those limits matter if your buyers rely on them.

Worldpay says its online service can accept payments in 170+ countries. That is where buyers can pay from. It does not mean stores in all those countries can sign up. Check where your business can be based and which currencies you can receive.

  • Good fit: You have a confirmed Worldpay account and Shopify app that meet your needs.
  • Tradeoff: Pricing, payout terms, and features depend on the product and agreement.
  • Check: Wallet support, card storage, payment capture, refunds, and early-exit terms.

Check the entity named in your contract. FIS sold a majority stake to GTCR in February 2024. Global Payments completed its acquisition of Worldpay on January 12, 2026. Do not apply an old contract’s fees to a new quote.

Compare the Full Cost of Shopify Payment Processing

Use one month of sales to price each eligible option. Include payment fees, Shopify fees, refunds, currency conversion, and disputes. Compare reserves separately: held funds affect cash flow, but are not automatically a fee or permanent loss.

Worked Example · US Basic Plan

Assume $50,000 in sales across 1,000 standard domestic online card orders. Each route charges an assumed 2.9% + 30¢ processing rate.

Shopify Paiements

$1,750

$1,450 percentage fees + $300 per-order fees.

Third-Party Card Provider

$2,750

The same $1,750 + an assumed 2% Shopify fee ($1,000).

Hypothetical comparison, not a provider quote. It excludes subscriptions, premium and international cards, FX, refunds, disputes, and gateway charges. It assumes Shopify’s third-party fee applies to every order.

The example uses Shopify’s published US Basic rates. Other plans and contracts differ. Shopify lists fee exemptions, including PayPal when Shopify Payments is your primary provider. Apply the correct rule to each payment method.

What Happens When a Shopify Payments Dispute Is Filed?

A chargeback starts through the buyer’s bank. For Shopify Payments card disputes, work in Shopify admin, not a direct Stripe dashboard. Read the reason, meet the shown deadline, and submit evidence tied to the claim. The bank decides the outcome. See Shopify’s chargeback process.

Keep these fees separate. The table shows published US examples checked November 3, 2026. Direct Stripe and PayPal fees are not Shopify Payments fees; contracts and other countries can differ.

US dispute-fee examples. On small screens, scroll the table sideways; keyboard users can focus it and use arrow keys.

Payment RoutePublished FeeWhat to Check
Shopify Payments cards$15Returned if you win.
Direct Stripe$15 received + $15 if manually counteredOnly the countered fee is returned on a win.

PayPal-managed disputes$15 standard / $30 high-volumeSeparate from card chargebacks; exceptions apply.

The Shopify Payments terms allow funds to be held in reserve. They also let Shopify enroll high-risk accounts in programs that change who can fight a dispute. Read the terms for your country and any account notice. These steps do not apply to every store.

Review your chargeback and fraud thresholds and keep proof of shipping, returns, and plan terms. Use chargeback prevention alerts to help resolve cases they cover before a chargeback. Check the scope and fees for your setup. An alert may require a refund.

Choose a Processor for CBD, Supplements, or Dropshipping

Shopify Payments eligibility rules list goods and business types you cannot use it for. The lists vary by country. Check Shopify's acceptable business practices too. They cover risk, shipping, refunds, and buyer complaints. A legal product may still fall outside the rules.

  • Hemp, CBD, and THC: Shopify Payments does not support these products. You need a compatible third-party provider that approves them. Review Shopify’s hemp payment rules; approval is not guaranteed.
  • Supplements: Check the ingredients, product claims, and local rules with the provider. Do not assume all supplements are accepted or banned.
  • Dropshipping: Check your products and supply chain. Provide accurate shipping times, tracking, and clear returns. Do not assume the business model alone proves eligibility or ineligibility.

Ask for approval before launch. Get reserve percentage, release timing, and review triggers in writing. Keep enough cash for refunds and delayed payouts, based on the terms you actually receive.

Can You Accept Crypto With Shopify Payments?

You can accept USDC through Shopify Payments if your store meets the current USDC requirements. Check your region and your account representative’s home address. Your region also controls whether you can receive funds in USDC or your chosen payout currency. Buyers cannot use USDC for subscription products.

The Shopify stablecoin payments announcement describes the launch. Use the current help guide to check what you can turn on today. Taking USDC does not change the rules for the goods you sell.

Review your refund process and avoid common Shopify chargeback mistakes across your card sales. Crypto and card payments have different dispute rules; plan for both.

Shopify Foire aux questions sur les prestataires de services de paiement

What Payment Processor Does Shopify Use by Default?

Shopify Payments is the built-in service for eligible stores. You must set it up and complete required checks before taking payments. If your country or products do not qualify, choose a supported third-party provider.

Is Shopify Itself a Payment Processor?

Shopify runs your online store. Shopify Payments is its built-in payment service, which works with processing partners. You manage your store and its payment tools in Shopify admin.

What Is the Best Payment Gateway for Shopify?

Start with Shopify Payments if you qualify and want one place to manage payments. Add supported methods your buyers need. If you need another gateway, compare only options approved for your store’s country and products.

How Much Are Shopify Payments Processing Fees?

US standard online card rates start at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. Premium cards, international payments, other countries, and contracts can differ. Check your account’s current rates.

What Should I Look for in a Payment Processor for Shopify?

Check Shopify compatibility, product approval, total fees, payout timing, and support first. Then test your required cards, wallets, subscriptions, and refunds. Ask who owns each part of the dispute process.

Can I Use PayPal and Stripe Together on Shopify?

Only if both payment routes are supported for your store. Standalone Stripe is unavailable where Shopify Payments is supported. US stores using Shopify Payments can add PayPal Wallet within that service. Check your country’s current setup before choosing.

Which Shopify Payment Processor Has the Lowest Fees?

There is no lowest-cost provider for every store. Compare your card mix, sales volume, plan, refunds, and dispute costs. Shopify Payments avoids Shopify’s third-party transaction fee on its transactions. A third-party quote must include any extra Shopify and gateway fees.

What Is the Difference Between a Payment Gateway and a Payment Processor on Shopify?

The gateway passes payment details securely from checkout. The processor helps the banks approve the sale and move funds. Many services do both jobs. That is why people often use the terms in the same way.

For a broader best payment gateway comparison, check each provider’s specific Shopify route first. If you are considering Shopify Plus, compare the full plan cost as well as payment rates.

Test Your Payment Setup Before You Switch

Run this short acceptance test with the provider. Use test mode where supported, then confirm the first real payout before moving more volume.

  1. Approve the route. Record the app name, supported products, country, and account owner.
  2. Test the sale. Check mobile checkout, each required method, capture, and failed-payment messages.
  3. Test refunds. Run full and partial refunds. Confirm which fees return and where funds come from.
  4. Match the payout. Reconcile the order, processing fee, Shopify fee, and bank deposit.
  5. Prepare for disputes. Name the person or service that receives alerts, gathers evidence, and meets deadlines.

Also ask about data access and incident response. The 2024 Evolve Bank breach is a reminder to assess third parties. See Evolve’s incident notice and our 2024 chargebacks report for historical context, not a current fraud forecast.

Protect the Revenue Your Shopify Store Earns

Once your payment route is set, connect your dispute tools. Chargeflow’s Shopify integration gathers proof and sends responses for disputes it supports. Its shopify chargeback app also offers tools to help prevent disputes. Check which products and payment connections fit your store.

Use our Shopify chargebacks guide when optimizing your checkout flow. Then see how Chargeflow can help you prevent chargebacks and manage dispute responses.
