Resumo:

  • Use Discover’s actual dispute reason and your merchant provider’s response channel.
  • Treat retrieval requests, chargebacks, and later notices as distinct tasks.
  • Use claim-specific evidence, including relevant digital-fulfillment records.
  • Confirm deadlines and available next steps rather than assuming a universal one-shot process.

A Discover chargeback is a disputed card payment handled under Discover Network’s applicable rules and the merchant’s processing arrangement. Merchants should identify the case stage, reason, and response channel before selecting evidence.

Discover has its own dispute framework. A Visa or Mastercard code table does not replace the Discover reason shown in your notice, and a cardholder help page does not establish your merchant deadline.

How Long Do You Have to Dispute a Discover Charge?

Discover cardmembers, like holders of any US credit card, have 60 days from the date of the statement showing the charge to dispute a billing error under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FTC consumer guidance). A dispute can be filed from the Discover Account Center online, in the Discover app, or by calling the number on the back of the card (Discover contact options). Contacting the merchant first often resolves the problem faster than a formal dispute.

For merchants, that 60-day clock belongs to the cardholder, not to you. Discover still opens many cases as an inquiry, a request for information, before any chargeback. An inquiry answered with evidence closes with no dispute fee; an inquiry left unanswered can turn into a chargeback you cannot contest (Stripe, how disputes work). Your deadline is the one printed on the notice from your payment provider, and the sections below cover how to meet it.

Identify the Case Stage and Merchant Account

Case itemWhat to verifyPor que isso é importante
Retrieval requestWhich transaction documents were requested and when they are due.An information request is a distinct task.
ChargebackThe specific reason, disputed amount, and response options.Determines whether and how to challenge.
Representment responseEvidence submitted and confirmation received.Submission is not the same as a favorable decision.
Later noticeThe new objection and permitted next action.Do not assume every case has no follow-up or an automatic appeal.

Discover’s published merchant dispute-system help distinguishes retrieval responses and representment requests. Its legacy interface instructions are not a substitute for the current portal and file requirements supplied by your processor.

Use Discover-Specific Reasons Without Overgeneralizing

Read both the code and the explanation. If your provider displays abbreviated labels, ask how they map to the actual network condition. Do not reuse a prior case’s evidence solely because both notices mention fraud or delivery.

  • Unauthorized use: relevant authentication, customer-account, and payment records.
  • Goods not received: purchase agreement, destination, and delivery outcome.
  • Not as described: the original product representation and a response to the specific complaint.
  • Duplicate or wrong amount: payment references and the agreed price.
  • Credit not processed: a completed refund record, including amount and date.

The guides for unauthorized transactions, nonreceipt, and billing errors help organize the facts. A delivery record does not independently prove consent, and a payment approval does not establish satisfactory fulfillment.

Distinguish Customer Reporting From Merchant Submission

Discover’s consumer dispute guide identifies unauthorized charges, billing errors, and qualifying service issues as different concerns. Those customer-facing instructions should not be converted into a universal 20-day merchant response rule.

Record your case’s due date, submission method, and owner. Build in time for missing attachments and review. The chargeback lifecycle includes investigation after the evidence cutoff, so an open case does not necessarily mean more time remains to respond.

Make Digital and Service Evidence Useful

For a digital purchase, identify the product, entitlement, delivery or activation event, and relevant usage period. Connect those records to the disputed payment. Do not claim digital goods have no meaningful dispute evidence simply because there is no carrier tracking.

For an item-not-as-described complaint, answer what differed from the promise. For canceled services, show the agreement and the cancellation timeline. Use a consistent evidence structure without treating every successful login as authorization proof.

Reconcile the Outcome and Confirm Any Next Step

Check whether a refund or reversal has already compensated the customer before taking additional action. Keep the original payment and all adjustments linked. Use refund reconciliation guidance to prevent a second credit.

If a later notice arrives, ask the acquirer to confirm the remaining response path, deadline, and costs. The statement that every Discover merchant has only one possible stage is too broad. You can organize supported case responses with Chargeflow’s automated recovery.

Perguntas frequentes

Does Discover use Visa chargeback reason codes?

Discover uses its own dispute framework. Merchants should read the Discover reason and explanation in their provider’s notice rather than substitute a Visa code.

Do Discover disputes always end after one submission?

A Discover case’s available next steps depend on the stage, network rules, and provider. Merchants should review later notices and confirm options with the acquirer.

Can digital-goods merchants respond to Discover chargebacks?

Digital-goods merchants can use relevant entitlement, delivery, account, and usage records when the case permits a response. The evidence must address the specific allegation and does not guarantee a win.
