En resumen:

  • Verify P2P payments in the provider account before fulfillment or refunds.
  • Separate account takeover, scam-induced transfers, fake notices, and commercial purchase disputes.
  • Recovery rights depend on the payment rail and jurisdiction; avoid universal irreversibility claims.
  • Report promptly, preserve references, and use supported refund or dispute channels.

P2P fraud is deception or unauthorized activity involving peer-to-peer payments, such as account takeover, impersonation, fake payment notices, or fraudulent refund requests. Recovery options depend on the payment rail, who initiated the transfer, the provider’s rules, and the jurisdiction.

For merchants and marketplace sellers, the immediate priority is verifying payment independently before releasing goods or sending money back. A payment screenshot or email is not the same as a confirmed transaction in your account.

Identify What Actually Happened

EscenarioKey distinctionFirst action
Someone accessed an account and sent moneyPotential unauthorized transfer.Report the activity and secure the account.
The user sent money after deceptionPotential authorized push-payment scam.Report the scam and request the available recovery process.
A buyer sends a fake payment noticeThere may be no incoming payment at all.Check the provider account directly before fulfillment.
A buyer asks for an overpayment refundThe original payment may be absent, stolen, or subject to reversal.Use the provider’s investigation and refund process.
A commercial purchase is disputedPurchase or card protections may apply.Check the payment type and transaction eligibility.

The FTC’s online-selling scam guidance describes fake payment notifications and bogus refund requests. Verify the account entry rather than trusting a message supplied by the buyer.

Verify Payment and Recipient Details Independently

  • Open the payment app or business dashboard through your usual route.
  • Match the amount, transaction reference, and recipient account to the order.
  • Check the actual status rather than assuming “pending” means completed.
  • Confirm unexpected changes to payment or refund instructions through an established contact channel.
  • Do not share passwords or one-time verification codes to receive payment.

Use approved commercial payment features when selling goods or services. For example, Venmo purchase-dispute guidance explains why a business or eligible purchase transaction differs from a personal transfer. Do not ask customers to mislabel purchases to avoid the applicable process.

Separate U.S. Unauthorized Transfers From Scam-Induced Payments

The CFPB’s electronic-transfer FAQs explain that a transfer initiated by a fraudster using credentials obtained through deception can qualify as unauthorized under Regulation E. That is different from automatically classifying every payment personally initiated by a deceived user as unauthorized.

Describe who initiated the transfer and how access was obtained. Do not assume voluntary disclosure of credentials eliminates every protection, or promise that all scams will be reimbursed. The unauthorized-transactions guide helps distinguish consent and account access.

Avoid Blanket Claims That P2P Payments Cannot Be Recovered

Payment systems have different recovery mechanisms. A card-funded transaction may involve card-dispute rights; a bank transfer may have a recall, error-resolution, or reimbursement route. These are not interchangeable forms of chargeback.

In the UK, the Payment Systems Regulator established mandatory reimbursement requirements for eligible Faster Payments APP scam claims, with a maximum of £85,000 per claim. Eligibility and exceptions matter. See the PSR’s reimbursement policy. This does not create worldwide coverage for every payment app or commercial dispute.

Report Quickly and Preserve the Payment Trail

The FTC’s mobile-payment advice recommends contacting the payment service when a scam occurs. Report the transaction promptly through official channels and ask what steps can stop, reverse, or investigate it.

Retain transaction references, recipient details, messages, and timestamps. For a seller, also keep the order and fulfillment status. A transaction-state assessment helps prevent a second payment from being sent as an attempted fix.

Use refund reconciliation before issuing any credit. Incorporate lessons into payment fraud prevention and order-review controls. For eligible card disputes, you can organize supported evidence through Chargeflow’s automated recovery.

Preguntas frecuentes

Are all P2P payments irreversible?

Not all P2P payments have the same recovery options. The payment rail, authorization facts, provider rules, and jurisdiction determine whether a reversal, dispute, or reimbursement process is available.

Should a seller trust a P2P payment screenshot?

A seller should verify the payment directly in the provider account. A screenshot or notification can be fabricated and does not establish that funds were received.

Is sharing credentials the same as authorizing every transfer?

Sharing credentials does not automatically mean every later transfer was authorized. The facts of who initiated the transfer and the applicable legal framework must be assessed by the provider or financial institution.
