Resumo:

  • Stripe chargebacks involve issuer review; Stripe supplies the merchant response workflow.
  • Use the case deadline and account-specific fee schedule rather than a universal time limit or price.
  • Match evidence to the dispute reason and review it before final submission.
  • Reconcile recovered funds separately from dispute-rate monitoring.

This guide covers Stripe chargeback balance reconciliation: disputed principal, fee entries, outcome credits, and remaining loss. For reviewing a claim and submitting merchant evidence, use the Stripe dispute evidence guide.

A Stripe chargeback is a card payment dispute that can reverse a merchant’s payment while the card issuer reviews the cardholder’s claim. Stripe provides the case workflow and forwards evidence; the issuer determines the dispute outcome.

Manage each case as both an evidence task and a financial event. A submitted response, a favorable decision, and money returned to your balance are separate milestones. For the wider workflow, see Stripe dispute management.

Separate the Case Status From the Financial Outcome

Case stateOperational actionFinancial check
Inquiry or warningRead the request and respond if required; do not assume a formal chargeback exists.Check whether funds were actually debited.
Open chargebackRecord the reason, response deadline, owner, and available response options.Match the disputed amount and any fee to the balance transaction.
Evidence submittedRetain the submission confirmation and monitor the case.Do not book a recovery just because evidence was accepted.
Won or lostRecord the decision and review recurring causes.Reconcile returned funds and applicable fee adjustments.

The chargeback process differs from a merchant refund. Use the case’s displayed status instead of inferring an outcome from an email or a customer’s promise to withdraw.

Use the Dashboard Deadline and Your Account’s Pricing

Stripe describes a typical merchant response window of 7–21 days and issuer review of 60–75 days, with the overall process commonly taking 2–3 months. These are planning ranges, not a deadline for every case. The due date shown on your dispute controls your response. See the official dispute lifecycle.

Do not budget a universal chargeback fee across countries or contracts. Distinguish the dispute received fee from any dispute countered fee, then confirm the applicable pricing and refund treatment for your account. Stripe’s published pricing and your agreement are the sources for the actual amount.

Maintain separate ledger fields for disputed principal, fees, product cost, fulfillment cost, and recovered funds. That makes the economics of accepting or challenging a case visible without counting the disputed principal twice.

Build Evidence Around the Actual Claim

  • Unauthorized payment: connect the payment to the customer using relevant authentication, account, and transaction records.
  • Nonreceipt: show the agreed delivery date, destination, and fulfillment evidence.
  • Not as described: preserve the listing at purchase and address the specific discrepancy.
  • Credit not processed: provide the refund amount, processing date, and reference.

Use the Stripe evidence panel to match records to the requested fields. A large attachment does not replace a clear explanation. For downloadable products or software, follow digital-goods evidence guidance rather than relying on a shipping template.

Stripe’s standard response cannot be amended after final submission. Review the case before submitting, and follow any special instructions for prefilled qualifying evidence. A customer withdrawal does not remove the need to respond as instructed. See Stripe’s response instructions.

Improve Account Health Beyond Recovery

Winning a dispute does not remove it from Stripe’s dispute-rate calculations. Stripe also distinguishes dispute activity by dispute date from dispute rate by charge date. Use the metric definitions before comparing periods or processor dashboards.

Investigate descriptors, delayed fulfillment, cancellation failures, and repeat payment attempts. Pair chargeback prevention with case review; submitting evidence alone does not prevent the next dispute. If a claim is valid, record the cause and correct the underlying process.

Connect Evidence and Reconciliation

You can complement your payment workflow with Chargeflow’s automated chargeback recovery to organize evidence and manage responses across supported integrations.

A hypothetical Stripe chargeback reconciliation ledger

This page owns balance reconciliation; the Stripe evidence guide owns case review and submission. The following invented numbers illustrate the ledger and are not Stripe pricing.

EntryIllustrative amountInterpretation
Disputed amount debited−$200Payment amount under dispute.
Received fee recorded−$15Illustrative account fee, recorded separately.
Countering fee recorded−$10Illustrative incremental fee; verify actual account terms.
Favorable-outcome credit+$200The actual payment recovery entry.
Countering-fee credit if applicable+$10Only record a credit confirmed in the account.
Net movement in this example−$15Recovered principal does not mean every cost was recovered.

If the case is lost and no fee credit occurs in this example, the net movement remains −$225. Use actual balance-transaction references and currency, and verify the fee rules for the account’s country and contract in Stripe’s fee documentation. Measure dispute filings separately from recovered amounts.

Perguntas frequentes

How long do Stripe chargebacks take?

Stripe chargebacks commonly take 2–3 months, but timing varies by case and network. Use the response due date in the Dashboard rather than the overall review estimate.

Does winning a Stripe chargeback erase it from my dispute rate?

Winning a Stripe chargeback does not remove the filed dispute from Stripe’s dispute-rate calculation. Track recovery separately from prevention and account monitoring.

Should I refund an open Stripe chargeback?

For an open Stripe chargeback, follow the dispute workflow and check the payment’s refund status before taking action. A separate reimbursement can create duplicate compensation.
