En bref :
- Review stalled deliveries, unresolved returns and buyer questions daily.
- Check the actual dispute deadline and protection status for each order.
- Assign backlog owners and measure the same order cohort over time.
Holiday sales leave a pile of late orders, gift returns and refund requests. Many post-holiday chargebacks start there. This checklist shows how to prevent chargebacks on Shopify after the holidays and how to respond when one arrives.
Read it with the Shopify chargebacks guide. This page covers the weeks after a big sale, when your shipping and support teams need one shared list of open orders.

Map the Holiday Complaint to the Record You Need
Most holiday disputes come from a few common complaints. Match each one to the records you need:
| Post-holiday complaint | First records to review | Operational fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gift recipient cannot identify the purchase | Order confirmation, buyer and recipient details, statement descriptor | Make the purchase and support contact easy to recognize. |
| Delivery was missed or delayed | Checkout delivery promise, dispatch and carrier events | Identify stalled shipments and tell the buyer the actual options. |
| Return or refund remains unresolved | Return receipt, support conversation and refund status | Reconcile the return and completed refund; assign stuck cases. |
| Renewal after cancellation | Cancellation request, effective date and billing event | Correct cancellation failures and retain the event timeline. |
| Unauthorized or not as described | The actual allegation, purchase record and relevant fulfillment or authentication data | Investigate the facts; do not presume every complaint is friendly fraud. |
Read the reason shown on the actual case. Shopify chargeback codes are grouped into reason categories. They are not one fixed list of card-network codes.

Watch the Shopify Chargeback Email
Shopify alerts you when a chargeback or inquiry opens and shows the response deadline. Make sure that email reaches the person who owns disputes. Shopify lets you control who gets emailed about chargebacks and inquiries, as its chargeback process page explains.
During the holiday backlog, check the chargeback notifications every day. A missed email can mean a missed deadline.
Run a Daily Post-Holiday Prevention and Response Checklist
Good Shopify chargeback prevention starts with these daily steps. They reduce Shopify disputes before they turn into chargebacks:
- Audit open delivery promises. Compare promised dates with carrier events. Send stuck shipments to your fulfillment team and give buyers a clear update. Late shipping is one of the easiest chargeback causes to fix.
- Reconcile returns daily. Match each returned item to its order and refund. Tell support whether the refund went through, failed or is still pending.
- Keep gift orders easy to recognize. Note why buyer and recipient details differ. Give support enough detail to answer the buyer.
- Review risky orders before fulfillment. Treat Shopify fraud analysis as a signal for review. It is not proof of fraud or a promise of protection.
- Check protection separately. Look at the order’s Shopify Protect status and the chargeback reason. Protected fraud cases take a different path than other cases.
- Prepare each disputed order. Note the provider, status, deadline and claim. Collect matching Shopify chargeback evidence, review it and confirm the submission. The Shopify dispute evidence checklist lists what to send.
- Handle refund conflicts with care. If a chargeback is open, follow its response steps. Do not issue a second refund just because a customer says they withdrew the case.
For current requirements, see Shopify’s response process and its Shopify Protect route. On a protected order, Shopify says you don’t need to act on a fraud or unrecognized chargeback. Keep each uploaded response complete and save a copy. To see where that coverage ends, compare Shopify Protect vs chargeback apps.

Use Automation to Control the Backlog
Shopify chargeback automation puts case data, reminders and evidence requests in one place. Add a separate queue for missing records or refund conflicts. Decide who sends each response and how the team checks it went through.
Track the backlog by task: late customer replies, stuck deliveries, open returns and open dispute responses. Compare the same group of orders before and after a change. Do not credit every swing to automation.
To connect your store, see the Chargeflow Shopify integration. Agree on who owns each case, and how open disputes move over, before you switch tools.
Looking Ahead: AI Agents and Shopify Chargebacks
Some orders now come from AI shopping agents. Keep the order instruction, approval and confirmation records your systems capture. Check the complaint the same way you would for any other order.
The agentic commerce evidence guide covers which records to plan for. An agent-made purchase does not prove authorization. It also does not qualify for a different protection program.
Foire aux questions
Which post-holiday tasks should we prioritize?
Start with stalled shipments and unanswered customers. Then handle returns with no refund decision. Last, work on disputes close to their response deadline.
Does a high-risk flag prove a gift order is fraudulent?
No. A high-risk flag is a signal to review. A different buyer and recipient is a fact to check, not proof of fraud.
Does Shopify Protect cover every Shop Pay dispute?
No. It covers fraud and unrecognized chargebacks on protected orders. Check each order's status and the chargeback reason.
How should we measure the holiday workflow?
Track the same group of orders over time. Count delivery complaints, open returns, on-time responses and recovered funds. Note the period behind every rate.
Préparez-vous à la prochaine vague de rétrofacturations
Before the next sale, name an owner for delivery issues, returns, customer contact and disputes. A shared checklist keeps everyone working from the same facts. The BFCM payments, fraud and disputes checklist sets owners and dates from October through the March 120-day dispute windows.
For timing, read why Q1 is the real chargeback season. The same lag explains why your September chargeback problem started in July. For the refund side, see holiday return and refund fraud. The Black Friday and Cyber Monday chargeback prevention guide covers the peak-season plan.
