En resumen:
  • WooCommerce is open-source commerce software on WordPress with merchant-selected hosting, extensions and payments. BigCommerce is a managed SaaS platform sold in Core, Growth, Scale and Performance plans. Name the plan or stack before you compare.
  • BigCommerce assigns its own order ID and does not let you set it. Its docs provide an M-MIG external source code that keeps migrated historical orders out of the GMV and order count used for pricing. Keep every legacy order, payment and refund identifier in a crosswalk.
  • WooCommerce core is free, and its product migration guide covers products only. Hosting, extensions, maintenance and subscription migration are separate budget lines, so cost both platforms against one forecast.
  • Chargeflow ecommerce enrichment is listed as New for WooCommerce and Coming soon for BigCommerce. Confirm the payment-processor connection separately.

WooCommerce vs BigCommerce compares open-source commerce software you host yourself with a managed SaaS platform. WooCommerce core is free on WordPress, and you choose and pay for hosting, extensions and payments. BigCommerce manages the platform and hosting and charges by plan, with GMV-linked terms.

This page covers two decisions that surface once you have narrowed the shortlist: how historical orders, refunds, subscriptions and payment references stay traceable when the platform changes, and what the three-year cost looks like for each model on the same forecast. For the wider shortlist and the edition and plan reference, use the ecommerce platform comparison.

The Core Difference

WooCommerce gives merchants an open WordPress-based stack, while BigCommerce provides a managed SaaS commerce platform. The decision is largely about who should own hosting, upgrades, extension compatibility, and platform reliability.

WooCommerce fits teams that value code and data ownership, content integration, and payment freedom. BigCommerce fits merchants that want commerce depth and APIs without operating the core hosting and upgrade lifecycle themselves.

Where WooCommerce Fits Best

Your team or agency manages the WordPress and WooCommerce environment, including hosting, security, backups, updates, extension compatibility, and performance. Assign clear ownership and a release process that fits your business.

Where BigCommerce Fits Best

BigCommerce manages the platform and hosting; your team configures storefronts, apps, APIs, integrations, and operations. Model GMV-linked plan thresholds, storefront count, apps, implementation, provider fees, and custom development against the growth plan.

Historical Orders: Map IDs, Refunds, Subscriptions and Payment References

This map works in either direction between the two platforms. The cited documentation does not state that a historical order, its payment reference, its refunds and its subscription will import with every link intact. WooCommerce’s product migration guide covers products only and does not address orders, customers or subscriptions. Treat each row below as a test you run in a staging store before you migrate. Checked October 4, 2026.

Run one worked trace per platform. Take one illustrative completed order that was partially refunded and, if you sell subscriptions, one active subscription. Start only from the processor transaction ID and confirm you can reach the legacy order number, the new order ID, the purchased SKU, the refund and the next renewal.

Confirm the import sent no fulfillment or customer message. Then reconcile order counts, paid amounts and refund amounts for the same date range and currency. If any step needs someone to remember an old ID, add that column to the crosswalk.

Keep the legacy database export, the processor dashboard history and the crosswalk until your dispute window for the oldest imported order has closed. Card networks and processors set that window, so check it with your processor. This worked trace is an implementation check, not a measured result for either platform.

Three-Year Costs: WooCommerce Hosting and Maintenance vs BigCommerce Plan and GMV

Both stacks use the same forecast as the ecommerce platform comparison: $500,000 of first-year sales growing 10% a year, which is $500,000, $550,000 and $605,000. Every figure below is an illustrative input for one hypothetical store. It is not a quote or a benchmark for either platform, so replace each number with your own quoted terms.

Published reference points, checked October 4, 2026: WooCommerce pricing lists the core platform as free with no monthly subscription, hosting at $25 to $350 a month for most stores, extensions at $29 to $299 a year each and WooPayments at about 2.50% to 2.90% plus 30¢ per transaction, without a stated country or currency. BigCommerce pricing shows Core, Growth, Scale and Performance in US dollars, with Scale at $299 a month billed annually and an Open Payment Provider fee of 0.6% on Scale. Embedded Payment Providers carry no BigCommerce fee.

Adjust three inputs to see the three-year cost and BigCommerce plan changes. The starting example retains the existing store budget. Optional settings let you replace the cost allowances and billing terms.

BigCommerce: three years$118,165

Planning estimate in USD.

Optional costs and plan settings

WooCommerce’s $700 monthly example combines $150 hosting, $150 extensions and $400 maintenance. BigCommerce’s $300 combines $150 apps and $150 integration upkeep; its platform fee is calculated separately. These are editable hypothetical allowances, not provider quotes.

If Performance is required, enter each affected year’s all-in annual platform quote, including any overage and provider fees. A blank quote stays unresolved.

Year-by-year costs and assumptions
Annual run-rate scenarios; not a forecast of actual invoice timing
AñoGross ordersInclusive GMV / planBigCommerce platform feesWooCommerce totalBigCommerce total

Each forecast year is treated as a steady annual run rate with orders spread evenly across 12 months. Actual auto-upgrades use trailing-12-month GMV evaluated monthly; seasonal peaks can increase Scale overage. This model does not reconstruct invoice dates, proration or a store’s rolling GMV history. Higher feature requirements may require a higher plan.

The operating and setup allowances are hypothetical. Processing is the same editable percentage allowance for both stacks, with no per-transaction fee; replace it with a blended effective rate. Unentered refunds, disputes, international surcharges, additional storefronts and other contract costs are excluded. A Performance quote must include all platform charges for the relevant forecast year.

BigCommerce self-service Inclusive GMV is gross order value less 10%. Core and Growth use $30,000 and $100,000 trailing-12-month caps. Scale has 0.9% overage above $33,333 in a month; this model requests Performance pricing at $2 million annual Inclusive GMV. Annual-billing monthly equivalents are $29/$79/$299; monthly billing is $39/$105/$399. Open Payment Provider fees are 2%/1%/0.6% of attributed GMV. Embedded providers have no BigCommerce provider fee; processor charges remain separate.

Sources: BigCommerce US pricing and Embedded Provider list and BigCommerce 2026 GMV and plan mechanics. Checked October 6, 2026. Use dashboard GMV and your current agreement to reconcile the actual bill.

The default inputs reproduce the original hypothetical budget: $500,000, $550,000 and $605,000 of gross orders, with matching operating, implementation, migration and labor allowances. The calculator uses even monthly order volume and full-year run-rate plan selection. Replace the allowances with your quotes and compare the cost lines before choosing a platform.

Use the Open Payment Provider share to test the extra platform fee independently of processor charges. Keep historical migrated orders classified correctly, as described in the migration map above. Model subscription apps, additional storefronts and custom development in the operating allowance, then validate rolling GMV and seasonal overage against your actual account.

Connect Platform Records to Dispute Responses

A card dispute isn't decided by which ecommerce platform you run, but the platform does set the ceiling on how much commercial context you can hand the processor when evidence is due. Stacks that keep order, payment, and fulfillment data connected can assemble the full transaction story in minutes instead of routing a request across several disconnected teams, and that is exactly why a solid ecommerce fraud prevention foundation earns its keep.

Refund and serviceWooCommerceKeep WooCommerce's own refund, cancellation, and support-ticket trail current for every disputed order.BigCommerceKeep BigCommerce's refund, cancellation, and multi-channel support history current for every disputed order.

Four questions decide how well this works in practice. Where does the dispute notice originate? How visible is the deadline? Who holds evidence-submission rights? Does the resolved outcome reach finance and analytics reporting? With WooPayments, the merchant submits evidence from the dashboard and gets one submission. With BigCommerce, the selected payment provider determines the workflow.

A generic win-rate figure is not a useful comparison point, because reason code, merchant category, fraud mix, evidence quality, issuer behavior and calculation method all sit underneath it. Compare how reliably and quickly the operating workflow runs, using the worked trace in the historical-orders section above.

Which Platform Should You Choose?

Choose WooCommerce if WordPress is strategic, hosting and extension freedom matter, and your team or agency can own security, performance, updates, and compatibility.

Evaluate BigCommerce when managed commerce, APIs, storefront capabilities, and payment options support your roadmap. Include the applicable plan and commercial terms in the operating budget.

After you settle on a platform, capture the operational details behind that choice: release ownership, where payment and order identifiers are stored, which systems house fulfillment and communication evidence, refund synchronization, and dispute escalation paths. Getting these specifics on paper is what keeps the setup manageable once it is live.

Adding Chargeflow's Dispute Layer to WooCommerce or BigCommerce

WooCommerce ecommerce enrichment currently carries a New status at Chargeflow, alongside a New connection for WooPayments as a payment processor. BigCommerce enrichment, by contrast, is listed as Coming soon, meaning merchants should not assume it is already active. A BigCommerce merchant can still connect a supported payment processor now, routing disputes into Chargeflow, calling the Chargeflow API where relevant, and keeping order evidence intact in connected systems.

Chargeflow is designed to sit alongside the commerce platform and the payment provider, not to replace them. The storefront and order lifecycle remain the job of the commerce platform, while the processor handles authorization and routing. On top of that, Chargeflow can add a specialized layer covering automated chargeback recovery, evidence enrichment, prevention, alerts, analytics, and cross-processor visibility, depending on which products and connections are active.

Preguntas frecuentes

How Should I Migrate Historical Orders From WooCommerce to BigCommerce?

Plan product migration and historical-order migration separately. WooCommerce’s product migration guide covers products only. BigCommerce assigns order IDs itself and documents M-MIG as the external_source value that keeps migrated orders out of the GMV and order count used for pricing. Keep the legacy order number, processor transaction ID and refund references in a crosswalk, and test one refunded order and one subscription before a bulk import.

Does WooCommerce or BigCommerce suit a growing catalog better?

It depends on who should own the work. WooCommerce gives a growing catalog the freedom to choose hosting, extensions and payments, with your team or agency responsible for performance and updates. BigCommerce manages the platform and hosting, and growth is priced through plan and GMV terms. Demonstrate the same catalog, channel, payment and support requirements on both.

Is WooCommerce cheaper than BigCommerce?

It depends on the forecast and the stack. WooCommerce core is free, but hosting, extensions and maintenance are separate lines. BigCommerce Scale is $299 a month billed annually, plus a 0.9% overage on GMV above $33,333 a month. In the illustrative three-year table above, the two totals differ by about $1,030 on identical sales, so your own quotes and maintenance assumptions decide the result.

For chargeback handling, how do WooCommerce and BigCommerce compare?

Chargeback handling depends on keeping the processor case linked to the order, customer, fulfillment, refund, subscription and communication history on either platform. Chargeflow lists WooCommerce ecommerce enrichment as New and WooPayments as a New payment-processor connection, while BigCommerce ecommerce enrichment is Coming soon. Verify the exact Chargeflow and processor configuration before implementation.

Building a Stack That Holds Up Under Disputes

Whether WooCommerce or BigCommerce fits better depends on your customers and your growth plan, and that should drive the decision, not the other way around. After choosing, prioritize connecting payment, order, fulfillment, subscription, refund, and customer-service systems so legitimate transactions can be traced and defended end to end. Book a Chargeflow demo to review your payment processor connection and the order records your WooCommerce or BigCommerce store holds.
