En resumen:

  • Chargeback fraud involves deliberate misuse; a disputed payment alone does not establish intent.
  • Separate genuine unauthorized payments and service failures from suspected first-party misuse.
  • Use claim-specific evidence and avoid treating delivery or authentication signals as conclusive proof.
  • Challenge supported cases, handle valid complaints fairly, and prevent duplicate credits.

Chargeback fraud is the deliberate misuse of a card dispute to reverse a payment the cardholder knows is valid. It differs from an honest payment-recognition mistake, a genuine service complaint, or a dispute over stolen-card use.

Intent is often difficult to establish from merchant records alone. Treat suspected misuse as a case to investigate, and write the response around verifiable facts rather than an accusation.

Distinguish Deliberate Misuse From Other Disputes

The term friendly fraud is used broadly in payments and can include mistakes as well as intentional abuse. Stripe’s fraud-type guidance distinguishes stolen-card activity from misuse involving a legitimate purchase. Do not assume every disputed transaction belongs in the same category.

Investigate the Claim Before Choosing a Response

  • Read the actual reason and the customer’s stated allegation.
  • Match the disputed payment to the order and any prior refund.
  • Check whether your business made a delivery, description, billing, or cancellation error.
  • Identify records that support or contradict the specific claim.
  • Confirm that the case permits a response and note the deadline.

An item-not-received claim needs delivery evidence. An item-not-as-described claim needs purchase-time product information and an answer to the alleged discrepancy. An unauthorized transaction requires an authorization-focused assessment, not just proof that goods left the warehouse.

Use Evidence Without Claiming More Than It Proves

A shared IP address is not conclusive identity proof. Successful address or security-code checks do not establish intent. Delivery confirmation does not independently prove the cardholder authorized the payment. Present these records in context and explain how they relate to the allegation.

Use a short chronology and labeled exhibits. Include only relevant account activity, customer messages, fulfillment, consent, cancellation, and refund records. The issuer’s evidence review concerns the applicable dispute conditions, not whether your team believes the buyer behaved unfairly.

Stripe’s dispute evidence guidance emphasizes relevant, readable submissions. Use standard evidence categories to find the right records without sending an identical packet for every claim.

Prevent Avoidable Claims and Review Repeated Abuse

Clear descriptors, accurate product information, delivery updates, and accessible support can reduce confusion before a complaint escalates. Stripe’s prevention guidance supports these customer communication practices. They also make it easier to distinguish a service failure from an inconsistent allegation.

Repeated disputes can justify closer review, but they do not prove every future order is abusive. Use a documented policy for account restrictions, review relevant circumstances, and provide a way to resolve errors. Avoid rules based solely on apartment addresses, age assumptions, or shopping at unusual hours.

Pair chargeback prevention with fair refund handling. Do not issue a separate credit on an open case without checking whether the payment has already been reversed. Preserve legitimate customer recourse while addressing evidence-backed misuse.

Challenge Supported Cases and Learn From Valid Claims

Use representment when the case is challengeable and the evidence supports your position. Accepting a valid dispute can be the correct outcome. Track the cause, recovered funds, and operational fix separately so a team’s goal is not simply to contest every case.

You can organize supported evidence and response workflows with Chargeflow’s automated chargeback recovery.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is every chargeback fraud?

Not every chargeback is fraud. Cardholders can have valid complaints about unauthorized payments, delivery, product quality, billing, or refunds, and some disputes arise from honest confusion.

Does delivery tracking prove chargeback fraud?

Delivery tracking can help answer a nonreceipt claim, but it does not by itself prove deliberate chargeback fraud. Merchants should investigate delivery details and avoid inferring intent from a single record.

Should merchants challenge every suspected fraudulent chargeback?

Merchants should assess whether a suspected fraudulent chargeback is challengeable and supported by relevant evidence. Valid claims should be resolved appropriately, and unsupported accusations should not replace a factual response.
