How much does Etsy take per sale?

On a typical US sale Etsy takes about 10% to 11% of the order total, and up to 25% if the sale came from an Offsite Ad. A $35 item with $5 shipping costs $4.25 in fees: $0.20 listing, $2.60 transaction and $1.45 payment processing. Etsy pays out $35.75; after a $12 product cost and $5 to ship, the profit is $18.75.

Etsy's fee structure (US, 2026)

Cuota Importe Charged on
Listing fee $0.20 each listing, and each auto-renew after a sale
Transaction fee 6.5% item price + shipping + gift wrap
Payment processing 3% + $0.25 order total including sales tax
Offsite Ads 15% (12% above $10k/yr) orders from Etsy's external ads, 30-day window
Etsy Plus $10 per month optional subscription
Conversión de divisas 2.5% if your bank currency differs from your listing currency

Two details catch sellers out. The transaction fee applies to shipping, so charging $5 shipping costs you $0.33 in fees. Payment processing applies to sales tax Etsy collects, so a $3 tax line costs you another $0.09.

Etsy fee formula

Listing fee: $0.20 × listings used
+6.5% × (item price + shipping)
+3% × (item price + shipping + sales tax) + $0.25
+15% × (item price + shipping) if the sale came from an Offsite Ad

Reverse: for a target profit P, price = (P + cost + shipping cost − shipping charged + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − 0.065 − 0.03 − ads rate). The calculator's second mode solves this.

Offsite Ads: the fee you cannot opt out of above $10k

Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. If a buyer clicks one and orders within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order. The rate drops to 12% once you pass $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days, checked on the first day of each month, and stays at 12% for the life of the shop. Above that line you cannot opt out. The fee is capped at $100 per order. If the buyer's last click was an Etsy Ad instead, only the Etsy Ads cost applies.

Effective Etsy fee on a $40 order from an Offsite Ad

The same order without the ad is 10.6%. Price with the possibility of an ad sale in mind, or treat Offsite Ads as a marketing cost that lands on roughly 10% to 20% of orders for most shops.

Small and digital items: where the fixed fees bite

The $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing fee do not scale with price, so cheap items pay a far higher rate than the 10% headline.

Digital sellers feel this most. A $3 printable loses a quarter of its price to fees before the Offsite Ads fee, which charges 15% of even a $3 order. Bundles and multi-item orders dilute the fixed fees: one $15 order of five files pays $0.25 once, not five times.

Refunds, cases and chargebacks on Etsy

When you issue a full or partial refund, Etsy recalculates the transaction fee and the 3% processing fee on the reduced sale amount and credits the difference back. The $0.25 fixed fee and the listing fee stay charged. One exception: if Etsy itself covers the refund under Purchase Protection, none of the fees come back.

Buyers can open a case with Etsy, or a chargeback with their bank. Etsy's Purchase Protection covers qualifying orders up to $250 including shipping and tax. If the buyer wins a "not received", "arrived late" or "damaged" case, Etsy refunds them and you keep the payment. Damage is covered once per shop per calendar year.

To qualify, the order must ship within the stated processing time, carry valid tracking or an Etsy-purchased label, and the listing must show an estimated delivery date. An item that does not match its listing is never covered. Decisions arrive by email within one to three business days.

Chargebacks work differently. The bank, not Etsy, decides. Etsy asks you for evidence and gives you five calendar days to send it, then has 30 to 45 days to answer the card network.

A lost chargeback is debited from your Payment account, and Etsy can hold a reserve, for example 30% of your balance on a 45-day rolling basis, after repeated disputes.

  • Ship with tracking on every order; untracked orders are outside Purchase Protection
  • Add signature confirmation above $250, where Purchase Protection ends
  • Keep photos of the item before shipping for "not as described" cases
  • Reply to messages within 24 hours; most cases start as unanswered messages
  • Answer Etsy's chargeback evidence request inside the five-day window; a missed deadline is a lost case

How to keep more of each Etsy sale

  1. Price with the calculator's reverse modeEnter the profit you want and let it set the price, including fees on shipping and tax.
  2. Raise prices before raising shippingShipping is charged the 6.5% transaction fee too, and buyers see free shipping as a bigger benefit than a lower price.
  3. Use multi-quantity listingsOne $0.20 listing covers multiple units; the fee only renews after each sale.
  4. Set your bank currency to match your listing currencyAvoids the 2.5% conversion fee.
  5. Sell in person through SquareEtsy's Square integration skips the 6.5% transaction fee and Etsy processing on reader sales. Items not synced to a listing cost a $0.20 manual fee; you pay Square's rate instead.
  6. Watch the $10k Offsite Ads thresholdAbove it the rate drops to 12% but opting out is no longer possible; budget for ad sales.
  7. Track per-SKU profit, not shop revenueA $12 item with Offsite Ads can lose money after shipping.

Preguntas frecuentes

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

A $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% of the item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing. On a $40 order that is about $4.25, or 10.6%. Offsite Ad sales add 12% to 15%.

What percentage does Etsy take?

About 10% to 11% on a standard sale, and up to 25% to 26% when an Offsite Ad is involved.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% processing fee both apply to shipping charged to the buyer.

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

$9.95 on a $100 item with no shipping: $0.20 listing, $6.50 transaction and $3.25 payment processing, so Etsy pays out $90.05. Add $10 shipping and the fees rise to $10.90 on a $110 order. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add another $15, or $12 for shops over $10,000 a year.

Does Etsy take 30%?

No. Standard US fees are about 10% to 11% of the order total. The 30% figure usually comes from a sale that triggered the 15% Offsite Ads fee, where total fees reach about 25%, or from a cheap digital item where the fixed $0.45 in per-order fees is a large share of the price.

Does Etsy refund fees when I refund a buyer?

Etsy recalculates the transaction fee and the 3% processing percentage on the refunded amount and credits the difference, but keeps the $0.25 fixed processing fee and the listing fee. Refunds Etsy funds itself under Purchase Protection return no fees to the seller.

Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only if your shop made under $10,000 in the past 12 months. Above that, participation is mandatory at the 12% rate, capped at $100 per order, and the 12% rate stays with the shop permanently once earned.

What happens if a buyer files a chargeback on Etsy?

Etsy responds to the bank for you and asks for evidence within five calendar days. If the order was shipped with tracking and qualifies for Purchase Protection, Etsy covers the loss. Otherwise the amount is debited from your Payment account once the bank decides, usually within 30 to 45 days.

How do I calculate the price I need to make a profit on Etsy?

Switch the calculator to "Price for a target profit", enter the profit, your cost and shipping, and it returns the price after all Etsy fees.
