Securing Agentic Commerce: Why Payment Is Just the Beginning

En resumen:

Agentic commerce requires more than just successful payment processing. Protocol initiatives like Poppy must account for post-checkout risks, connecting agent identity, customer intent, and order rules to prevent costly mistakes, handle chargebacks, and improve resolution workflows.

The Post-Checkout Challenge in Agentic Commerce

A successful payment is too low a bar for agentic commerce.

Imagine a customer asks an agent to buy a jacket they can return. It orders a final-sale item. The retailer ships exactly what was ordered. Later, the customer disputes the charge.

The merchant needs to understand what happened. An agent mistake and a compromised account call for different responses.

Emerging Protocols and Industry Involvement

Sierra and Meta's draft Personal Agent Protocol, known as Poppy, is an encouraging step. It sets out a shared approach to recognizing agents, managing customer-approved access, and connecting activity across a business's website, APIs, and own agent.

Stripe joined the initial group developing the protocol. Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal are among the newly announced design partners. I'm glad to see our partners at the table. Their experience with payment risk and customer protection is essential to designing for what happens to a purchase after checkout.

The biggest opportunity is to use this context while a merchant still has choices. Information that helps explain a chargeback weeks later can also help catch a problem before shipping. As Poppy evolves, with payments still open for design, we need to build for that whole journey.

Connecting Intent and Fulfillment Before Shipping

That means connecting the agent's identity and granted access with the terms accepted, order changes, customer confirmations, and fulfillment records. Relevant purchase instructions add context when shared with the customer's consent.

Before fulfillment, merchants need to combine that context with account, payment, and delivery signals. A suspicious address change is a reason to verify the order. In the jacket example, a recorded request for a returnable item, paired with a final-sale order, is a reason to confirm the customer wants to proceed before the package leaves the warehouse.

During customer service, the same history gives teams a basis to explain the purchase and resolve a genuine mistake. Delivery and return records also support investigations into conflicting claims or suspected refund abuse.

If a complaint becomes an alert or a chargeback, those records help merchants decide whether to issue a timely refund or respond with relevant evidence. For a disputed order, the useful question is what the customer approved and what the merchant delivered.

Recurring mistakes show merchants and agent providers where terms or customer confirmation need to improve.

How Chargeflow Addresses Post-Payment Risk

This is the progression our products address today. Chargeflow Prevent assesses risk after payment and before fulfillment for Shopify merchants. Chargeflow Alerts helps resolve complaints before chargebacks, often through refunds. Chargeflow Automation assembles and submits dispute evidence. As agent context becomes available, it belongs in the decisions made at every stage.

For the jacket buyer, success is simple: someone catches “final sale” before the package leaves the warehouse.
