Stripe Smart Disputes is an automated evidence service for eligible card disputes. Chargeflow complements your payment operations by connecting dispute management with evidence from the systems you use to sell, fulfill orders, and support customers.

For merchants using Stripe, the practical question is how to make sure each case has an owner, the relevant records, and a timely response. A clear workflow helps your team use available automation while resolving the exceptions that need attention.

How Smart Disputes Eligibility Works

Stripe’s Smart Disputes documentation describes case-level eligibility based on factors including reason code, payment method, available evidence, relevance, and cost. Check eligibility for each dispute, including cases involving fulfillment or subscription records.

Read the status of the actual case before planning its response. A merchant’s product category alone does not tell you which evidence is ready or what further action is needed.

Bring Fulfillment and Customer Records Into the Response

Stripe’s setup guidance explains that merchants can enhance evidence packets. Supplying a tracking ID can enable retrieval of fulfillment information; recommended evidence can also make some cases eligible. This gives merchants a way to strengthen responses with shipping and customer-supplied records.

Build an evidence map for your own business. The point is to know where each fact is recorded and who can retrieve it, before a dispute arrives.

  • Physical goods: connect the disputed order to carrier tracking, fulfillment records, and relevant support conversations.
  • Subscriptions: retain the offer accepted at signup, cancellation history, billing events, and product usage relevant to the claim.
  • Services: record the agreed scope, delivery milestones, acceptance, and communication about any unresolved work.
  • Refunds: reconcile the original payment, the refund record, and communications about the promised credit.

Use the same map when reviewing compelling evidence. A large attachment bundle is less useful than a concise explanation connecting the claim to the relevant transaction records.

Where Chargeflow Adds Operational Value

Chargeflow’s AI Chargeback Platform brings prevention, recovery, analytics, and connectivity into a broader dispute operation. Its automated chargeback recovery workflow helps collect and organize evidence from connected systems for submission.

That is particularly useful when staff would otherwise need to move between order management, support, billing, and payment records. Treat onboarding as an evidence-readiness exercise: confirm which stores and accounts are connected, whether records match the payment, and who investigates missing information.

Keep pre-dispute alerts in a separate workflow from recovery. Alerts can support early resolution for supported services; responding to an already-filed dispute serves a different purpose. The chargeback alerts guide explains that earlier intervention point.

Assign Submission Ownership Before the Deadline

Before using multiple tools in one account, confirm how submission responsibility is configured. Document the settings agreed during onboarding and give your team a clear route for exceptions.

  1. Identify the case. Record its dispute ID, order ID, reason, amount, and current status.
  2. Check evidence readiness. Identify missing records and assign someone to retrieve them.
  3. Confirm the submission route. Establish which configured workflow will submit the response and how manual interventions are handled.
  4. Check the receipt. Verify that the response was submitted, rather than merely saved as a draft.
  5. Track the result. Record the decision and any operational change needed to prevent the same issue recurring.

Stripe’s response guidance directs merchants to the deadline shown for the case. Build your internal review cutoff earlier than that deadline so a missing document does not become a last-minute scramble. Our chargeback time limits guide provides broader context.

Measure Coverage, Recovery, and Cost Separately

A useful review asks whether fewer eligible cases went unanswered, whether evidence was complete, and how much revenue remained after fees. Do not infer that using two services has no additional cost merely because both offer success-based pricing. Check the applicable account terms and the charges for the services actually used.

Use dispute analytics to review outcomes alongside case volume. Keep a simple monthly record of unanswered cases, missing-evidence causes, submitted cases, recovered value, and service fees. Review the chargeback ratio separately; winning a case is not the same as preventing its original filing.

Perguntas frequentes

Does Smart Disputes Only Handle Fraud and Duplicate Charges?

Smart Disputes eligibility is determined per case. Check its current status instead of assigning coverage solely from the dispute category.

Can Merchants Add Shipping Evidence?

Merchants can add recommended fulfillment details and other supporting evidence to Smart Disputes. The setup documentation describes how this can improve the packet or eligibility.

How Does Chargeflow Complement the Workflow?

Chargeflow connects evidence collection and dispute management with broader prevention and analytics workflows. Confirm supported connections and submission settings during onboarding.

Does Automation Guarantee a Win?

Automation does not guarantee a dispute win. Evidence must address the claim, and the issuer determines the outcome.

What Should a Merchant Check Before Using Both?

A merchant should verify submission ownership, connected data sources, exception handling, and applicable fees before relying on an automated workflow.

Build a Repeatable Evidence Workflow

Start with a recent disputed order and trace the records needed to explain it. Close the missing connections, assign an exception owner, and verify submission status. That turns automation into a process your payments, finance, and support teams can operate consistently.
