En bref :
  • Squarespace and Shopify are hosted platforms for selling online. Squarespace pairs website design and content with commerce; Shopify centers on commerce operations. Choose by the product mix you will actually run.
  • Fee categories differ by plan: Squarespace lists a monthly plan fee, a digital content and memberships fee, and card processing; Shopify lists a monthly plan fee, card processing, and a third-party gateway fee. Do not collapse them into one rate.
  • US example on annual billing, with $8,000 physical, $3,000 digital and $2,000 subscription sales across 340 online transactions per month: Squarespace Core costs $658.00 and Shopify Basic costs $508.00 (both $29 plan). Squarespace Plus costs $532.00 and Shopify Grow costs $532.00.
  • Chargeflow lists Shopify ecommerce enrichment as Available and Squarespace as Coming soon. Confirm the payment-processor connection and ecommerce enrichment separately.

Squarespace and Shopify are hosted platforms for selling online, and the cost difference depends on your product mix. Squarespace combines website design and content with commerce; Shopify centers its platform on commerce operations. Explore the ecommerce platform comparison for a broader shortlist and the general method.

Squarespace and Shopify both promise a smooth storefront, but Chargeflow merchants care about something else: whether the order, payment, fulfillment, refund, subscription, consent, and support data stays connected enough to answer a dispute when one arrives.

Where Squarespace and Shopify Diverge

Squarespace begins with website design and content, then adds commerce. Shopify begins with commerce operations, then gives merchants tools to shape the storefront and brand experience.

A portfolio-led brand, creator, restaurant, studio, or services company may value Squarespace's cohesive publishing and visual tools. A product business with growing SKU count, channels, markets, apps, fulfillment partners, or payment complexity may fit Shopify's commerce-first operating model.

Where Squarespace Fits Best

Squarespace manages hosting, security, and upgrades; your team controls design, products, policies, and connected services. Test specialized checkout, B2B, marketplace, and multi-entity requirements early because they may need extensions or a different architecture.

Where Shopify Fits Best

Shopify manages core infrastructure and upgrades; your team configures themes, apps, functions, integrations, markets, and workflows. Model app costs, payment choices, transaction fees, theme work, and any Plus-only or custom requirement at projected scale.

Evaluate the payment layer using our payment gateway comparison. For records used when a payment is challenged, consult our compelling evidence guide.

Squarespace vs Shopify Launch Validation Worksheet

Copy this manual worksheet into your planning document. Record each proposed configuration using the same scope and observation period. It does not fetch prices or rank providers.

Merchant planning worksheet: use quoted terms and your own operating data.

Approve launch when the required customer journeys pass and the team can retrieve both new and historical order records.

Example: follow an old product link to its destination, place a test order, process a test refund, and verify the related customer messages. Then retrieve a historical order separately.

A successful product import and a working new checkout answer different questions. Assign owners to historical records, payments, fulfillment, and URL mapping. Record each issue and its resolution before launch. Use the same sample journeys when evaluating a new Squarespace store or a Shopify migration.

Worksheet and customer evidence reviewed September 8, 2026.

What Shopify’s Squarespace Migration Guide Covers

Shopify’s Squarespace migration guide treats historical-order import separately from product and customer data. It also recommends testing payments, refunds, cancellations, fulfillment, and customer emails, and planning redirects for changed URLs.

Translate the documented steps into acceptance criteria for your own implementation. Confirm the selected migration method and test the records and customer journeys it produces. These are launch-planning checks, not evidence of a performance advantage for either platform.

Product-Mix Costs and Implementation Paths

Use the same country, currency, billing period and product mix before you compare platforms. This worked example is an illustration, not a quote or research result. It assumes a US merchant, USD, annual billing, native processing (Squarespace Payments or Shopify Payments), and one month of sales: $8,000 of physical goods across 160 orders, $3,000 of digital content across 100 orders, and $2,000 of subscriptions across 80 charges, so $13,000 across 340 online transactions.

A separate $4,000 of POS sales across 100 in-person sales is shown on its own line. Plan fees and online rates come from the Squarespace pricing page, the Shopify pricing page and the Shopify digital products help page, checked October 4, 2026.

We pair plans with the same annual price (Core and Basic at $29) and show the next tier for each platform.

Reading the table: the totals above exclude refunds, disputes, taxes, currency conversion, optional apps and POS processing for Squarespace. They keep three fee categories apart: the website or platform fee, the digital content fee, and card processing.

Squarespace lists the digital content and memberships fee separately from card processing, so we assume both apply to the digital portion; confirm that treatment with Squarespace for your product type. Because Squarespace charges a percentage on digital content that falls from 5% on Core to 1% on Plus, the digital share of your mix changes the answer more than the headline plan price.

Shopify lists no equivalent digital content fee, so its digital cost is the plan and processing. Shopify's POS Lite is included on every plan, while POS Pro is optional.

Apply the same online sales mix to Squarespace Core/Plus and Shopify Basic/Grow. The existing POS and implementation guidance remains separate. Plan and standard-card inputs use Squarespace’s pricing table and Shopify’s US plan comparison.

Processing = all online sales × standard-card rate + successful payments × $0.30. Monthly plan amounts with annual billing: Squarespace Core $29, Plus $49; Shopify Basic $29, Grow $79. Standard-card rates: Core/Basic 2.9% + $0.30; Plus/Grow 2.7% + $0.30. Squarespace’s qualifying content/membership fee is 5% on Core and 1% on Plus. Shopify app costs are excluded, including membership or subscription functionality chosen for your implementation. Excludes premium and international cards, currency conversion, POS, third-party gateways, taxes, refunds, disputes and labor. Prices checked October 6, 2026.

Example sales inputs. Replace them with your own figures.

Implementation Paths by Product Mix

  • Mostly physical goods: compare the plan fee and card rate first, then confirm fulfillment, tax and shipping needs for each platform.
  • Digital content or memberships: on Squarespace, model the digital content fee at your plan level; on Shopify, confirm how your selected digital products or membership app is delivered and priced.
  • Subscriptions: Squarespace lists subscription support on every plan, with no additional subscription fee listed on Core, Plus and Advanced. For Shopify, get the current subscription app terms and supported payment methods before you model the cost.
  • In-person sales: Shopify lists in-person Shopify Payments rates by plan. Squarespace documents in-person selling in its app for the US and UK with Squarespace Payments, Stripe or Square, and states that each transaction follows the fees of the provider you connect. We did not total a Squarespace in-person rate, so confirm it for your provider and country.

Then project three years across your current store, expected growth and a harder case with more international volume, refunds or disputes. Add implementation, migration, design, support and chargeback labor, which neither pricing page includes.

How Squarespace or Shopify Shapes Your Dispute Evidence Trail

The outcome of a card dispute is not up to your ecommerce platform, but the platform does control how much commercial context is available the moment a processor asks for evidence. With the right stack, the complete transaction story can be reconstructed in one pass, rather than sending multiple teams searching through disconnected systems. That evidence layer works hand in hand with a wider ecommerce fraud prevention program, which shrinks the number of disputes that ever reach this point.

Payment referenceSquarespaceBecause Squarespace can route payments through Squarespace Payments, Stripe, or PayPal depending on setup, tie each order to whichever processor's transaction ID, authentication result, and descriptor actually handled it.ShopifyShopify orders should map cleanly to their Shopify Payments transaction ID, authentication outcome, and the descriptor the cardholder sees.
FulfillmentSquarespaceWhether it's a shipped product, a scheduled service, or a membership unlock, link the fulfillment or access record back to the Squarespace order.ShopifyShipment, delivery, pickup, or service-completion data needs to stay attached to the Shopify order ID throughout the fulfillment process.
Refund and serviceSquarespaceRefunds, cancellations, and any customer correspondence should reconcile against the matching Squarespace record.ShopifyRefunds, returns, cancellations, and support conversations need to stay synchronized with the originating Shopify order.

For Squarespace, the payment layer is important because Squarespace supports Squarespace Payments and connected processors such as Stripe and PayPal, depending on country and configuration. The processor used determines important dispute procedures and fees.

For Shopify, Shopify Payments centralizes payment and dispute workflows where available. Other gateways can be used, but fees, evidence flow, and dispute handling can differ by provider. Before treating either platform as dispute-ready, check where the deadline is surfaced, who is authorized to submit evidence, which system triggers the dispute notice, and whether the final outcome data reaches finance and analytics.

Skip the generic chargeback win rate when comparing these platforms; it depends on reason code, merchant category, fraud mix, evidence quality, issuer behavior, response deadlines, and the calculation behind the figure. The workflow's reliability and speed is the fairer comparison.

Put Squarespace and Shopify to the Test With Real Orders

Before committing, run five anonymized historical orders through both Squarespace and Shopify, making sure the set includes a fraud claim, an item-not-received claim, a product-or-service complaint, a refund disagreement, and a recurring-billing case if subscriptions apply to your business.

  • Identify both the ecommerce order and its matching processor transaction.
  • Restore the precise product page, price, policy, and checkout consent captured at the moment of sale.
  • Source the authentication, device, address, and fraud-review data permitted for submission by the processor.
  • Line up the shipping, delivery, access, cancellation, and refund records for that order.
  • Round up customer communications and the associated support-case record.
  • Note the time spent, any missing information, unclear ownership points, and how the eventual outcome is captured.

Use what you learn to weigh evidence coverage, identifier quality, and manual effort against your expected dispute volume.

Which Platform Should You Choose?

Evaluate Squarespace when its design tools and integrated content, services, and commerce workflows fit your operating plan.

Evaluate Shopify when its managed platform, apps, and operational workflows match your customer experience and release plan.

Whatever you choose, capture the decision in operational terms, not just a platform name: identify who owns releases, where payment and order identifiers are kept, which systems hold fulfillment and communication evidence, how refunds stay synchronized, and how a dispute gets escalated. Those are the details that decide whether the setup is still manageable well after launch.

Adding Chargeflow on Top of Squarespace or Shopify

Chargeflow lists Shopify ecommerce enrichment as Available and Shopify Payments as an Available payment-processor connection. Chargeflow currently lists Squarespace ecommerce enrichment as Coming soon. A merchant using Squarespace should not assume direct ecommerce enrichment is already live. It can still connect an available payment processor so disputes route into Chargeflow, use the Chargeflow API where appropriate, and preserve order evidence in connected operational systems.

Chargeflow is built to work alongside the commerce platform and the payment provider rather than substitute for either: the platform continues to run the storefront and order lifecycle, the processor continues to authorize and route payments, and Chargeflow contributes a dedicated layer of automated chargeback recovery, evidence enrichment, prevention, alerts, analytics, and cross-processor visibility, matched to whichever products and connections you use.

Foire aux questions

What Should I Test When Migrating From Squarespace to Shopify?

For a Squarespace-to-Shopify migration, test catalog mapping, historical-order access, payments, refunds, fulfillment, customer messages, and changed URLs. Shopify documents these as separate migration and launch tasks. Confirm the selected transfer method for each record type.

Is a design-led storefront on Squarespace or a commerce-first setup on Shopify the better fit?

Squarespace fits teams that start from website design, content and a focused catalog. Shopify fits teams that start from commerce operations such as multiple channels, apps and POS. Evaluate both against the same catalog, payment and operating requirements.

Is Squarespace cheaper than Shopify?

It depends on your product mix. In the US USD example above, with $13,000 of online sales across 340 transactions including $3,000 of digital content, Squarespace Core costs $658.00 and Shopify Basic costs $508.00, while Squarespace Plus and Shopify Grow both cost $532.00 per month. Squarespace lists a digital content fee that changes by plan, and Shopify lists a third-party gateway fee that applies if you do not use Shopify Payments. Model your own mix with current official pricing.

For merchants who expect chargeback volume, how do Squarespace and Shopify compare?

For chargeback operations on Squarespace or Shopify, what matters is whether the processor case stays linked to the order, customer, fulfillment, refund, subscription and communication history. Both platforms can support dispute workflows when payment, order and evidence data stay connected. Chargeflow integration coverage differs by platform and payment processor and changes over time, so verify current Chargeflow and processor configuration before implementation.

Building an Evidence-Ready Commerce Stack

Let the platform choice follow your customers and your growth plan rather than the reverse. Afterward, connect payment, order, fulfillment, subscription, refund, and support data so that every legitimate sale can be reconstructed and defended when it's questioned. A Chargeflow demo is a good next step if you want to see what a specialized chargeback layer adds to whichever stack you land on.
