Shopify vs. Shopify Plus: Is It Worth Upgrading?

TL;DR:

  • Shopify Plus is an enterprise contract, not a separate commerce platform.
  • The strongest reasons to upgrade are Plus-only checkout controls, unlimited staff, expansion stores, higher integration capacity, and advanced B2B needs.
  • Do not use a universal revenue threshold. Model the incremental platform cost against fee savings, labor savings, and attributable conversion or operational gains.
  • Shopify B2B and Flow now exist on standard plans, but several advanced capabilities remain Plus-only.

Shopify vs. Shopify Plus comes down to scale. Both run on the same core platform, but Plus is the enterprise tier that adds lower transaction fees, full checkout customization, unlimited staff accounts, higher API limits, and dedicated support. Upgrade once your order volume and customization needs outgrow standard Shopify, not simply once you can afford it. The honest answer is often "not yet."

This guide covers the real differences, the signals that justify the jump, what Plus will not fix, and what the upgrade costs in 2026. For the full picture, start with our complete Shopify Plus guide. Growth pressure like this is also why some founders buy an already-scaled Shopify store instead of upgrading their own from scratch.

Shopify vs. Shopify Plus at a Glance

Both plans share the same admin, checkout, and app ecosystem. The differences are fees, control, and support at scale, compared in the table below.

Prices, card rates and third-party transaction fees below come from Shopify's official plan comparison (US, checked 2026-10-07). Plus terms are on Shopify's official Plus plan pricing.

Support levelStandard support24/7 priority support; named services depend on the contract
B2B toolsCore B2B with up to three B2B market catalogsUnlimited market catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits, partial payments, and fulfillment payment requests

The transaction-fee line is the one finance teams should model first. Any external payment service provider you route through instead of Shopify Payments pays this fee on every order, and the gap between 0.6% and 0.2% grows with every order. At low volume it is noise; at high volume it can offset a large share of the plan fee.

Comparing Plus with Basic or Grow instead of Advanced? Those plans charge 2.9% and 2.7% + 30¢ on online card sales and 2% and 1% on third-party gateways, so the fee gap to Plus widens as you move down. Grow includes 5 staff accounts and Advanced 15; Plus is unlimited.

Core B2B is included on every paid plan (up to 3 catalogs); Plus adds unlimited catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits, partial payments, and payment requests per fulfillment. For teams selling to other businesses, that alone can justify a closer look; see Shopify Plus for B2B.

What You Actually Get With Shopify Plus

Plus is not a different product. It lifts limits that standard Shopify caps and adds some tools standard plans lack. Here is what each upgrade covers.

  • Lower Transaction Fees at Volume: Plus cuts third-party gateway fees to 0.2%, which saves real money once order volume climbs.
  • Advanced Checkout Customization: Use Plus-only app placement on the information, shipping, and payment pages, the Checkout Branding API, and custom apps containing Shopify Functions.
  • Unlimited Staff Accounts: Add every team member without hitting the 15-seat cap that standard Shopify enforces.
  • Higher Integration Capacity: Shopify cites API call limits up to 500% higher than standard plans for eligible enterprise integrations. Confirm the exact API and limit that matters to your architecture.
  • Operational automation: Shopify Flow is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus, so it is not a reason to upgrade on its own. It automates order tagging, fraud flags and fulfillment rules.
  • Priority Support: Shopify advertises 24/7 priority support for Plus. Confirm named resources, response commitments and exclusions in the contract.
  • Advanced B2B Tools: Use unlimited market catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits, partial payments, and payment requests per fulfillment.

Checkout customization is the feature merchants underestimate most. Standard plans support checkout editing and eligible apps, while Plus adds app placement on the core checkout pages and advanced branding controls. For a high-traffic store, that control can move revenue more than the fee savings do.

Signs You've Outgrown Standard Shopify

Upgrade on evidence, not aspiration. These five signals show whether the jump is justified. Check each one against your store.

Evaluate needs and economics

Five inputs to the upgrade decision

Measured financial value

Your model shows that fee savings, app consolidation, labor savings, or attributable commercial gains exceed the incremental Plus cost.

Required checkout control

You need checkout control that standard plans cannot deliver, like custom fields, conditional logic, or a fully branded flow.

Advanced B2B needs

Shopify B2B limits Basic, Grow and Advanced to 3 active catalogs. Plus is most relevant when you need unlimited catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits, partial payments, or payment requests per fulfillment.

Store and market structure

You are running several storefronts or expanding into new regions and currencies at the same time (see Shopify Plus global expansion). Plus includes 9 free expansion stores beyond your primary store; standard-plan multi-store setups usually mean a second full subscription or a third-party app.

Dispute capacity

Disputes are outpacing your manual support tools, and friendly fraud is eating margin every month.

Dispute volume may justify better risk tooling on any plan. Included expansion stores must meet Shopify’s same-brand rules; a separate brand requires its own Plus plan.

If two or more of these describe you, build the business case. If only one does, look for a cheaper fix first.

The break-even model is the anchor for finance leads. Use your actual payment mix, contract quote, app costs, labor, and attributable conversion impact instead of a generic GMV threshold. Shopify's own materials point to roughly $80,000 in monthly sales as one common signal (see the box above), but other public estimates for the same decision range from six-figure monthly volume to well over $1 million a year. That spread is itself the evidence: build your own model instead of adopting someone else's cutoff. For examples of what merchants run on the platform, see real Shopify Plus stores.

The chargeback signal is the one merchants notice last. As orders rise, disputes rise with them, and manual replies stop keeping up. High-volume Shopify Plus merchants are also the ones most exposed to card-network chargeback-ratio programs like Visa's VAMP or Mastercard's ECM, and those fines apply regardless of your Shopify plan. When that happens, the fix is dedicated tooling, not a plan upgrade.

B2B and international are structural signals, not seasonal spikes. If wholesale or new markets are on the roadmap, the native tools in Plus save months of app-stitching. That kind of change is hard to reverse, so weigh it early.

How to Upgrade From Standard Shopify to Plus

Shopify's upgrade page says an existing store is moved to the Plus plan within 24 business hours of signing up, so the account switch is quick. The planning around it is not:

Before the switch date

Turn the business case into an upgrade plan

  1. Model the cost

Compare Plus with your current plan using your own payment mix and app spend.

  2. Request a quote

The quote shows whether a variable platform fee applies to your business.

  3. Choose the contract term

A 3-year term has the lowest monthly rate, and a 1-year term costs more per month with a shorter commitment.

  4. Scope the build

Scope checkout changes, B2B catalogs and integrations before the switch date.

  5. Keep dispute tools connected

Chargeback and fraud tools do not come with the plan, so keep yours running through the switch.

What Upgrading Doesn't Fix

Plus upgrades your platform, not your exposure. Three problems follow you straight across the upgrade.

Keep these workstreams in the plan

Responsibilities that continue after upgrading

Fraud prevention

Shopify offers fraud analysis and eligible Shopify Protect coverage on every plan, but neither guarantees an order or covers every chargeback, so ecommerce fraud prevention stays largely on your team.

Dispute recovery

Plus does not add dispute recovery, so chargeback losses keep growing with your order volume.

Cross-border obligations

Cross-border tax, duties, and customs complexity do not disappear when you move to Plus, and cross-border ecommerce adds its own dispute risk.

Chargebacks scale with orders, not with your plan tier. Mastercard's June 2026 analysis, based on Datos Insights research, projects that the global cost of chargebacks to merchants will rise from $36.9 billion in 2026 to $46.1 billion in 2029.

The 2026 LexisNexis True Cost of Fraud study finds US merchants incur $5.13 in cost for every $1 of direct fraud loss. Upgrading your plan does nothing to lower that multiplier. If disputes are already piling up, learn how Shopify chargebacks work before you assume a bigger plan solves them.

Managed Markets, Shopify's cross-border service, charges 3.25% on Plus (3.5% on other plans) and leaves some chargeback cases with you, per the Shopify Help Center. You still need the right tax and logistics tooling on top of Plus.

For a scaling merchant, that gap is exactly why you still need dedicated chargeback and fraud protection on Shopify Plus. The platform tier does not close it, so plan for protection separately.

Our own network tells the same story. Across 20,000+ merchants and $50 billion+ in protected transactions, we see dispute volume climb right alongside order volume, whatever your Shopify tier. Chargeflow's chargeback recovery service handles evidence and recovery after a chargeback is filed, Chargeflow Alerts deflect disputes before they become chargebacks, and Prevent screens orders after checkout, before fulfillment.

Dedicated tooling does not require Plus to work. The Chargeflow Shopify integration installs on any Shopify plan with a one-click setup, so you can protect revenue before, during, or after an upgrade.

How Much Does Upgrading Cost?

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300/mo on a 3-year term, or $2,500/mo on a 1-year term. Shopify also confirms a variable platform fee can apply for higher-volume businesses, but it does not publish the percentage or the revenue threshold. Budget for that unknown before you commit.

The plan fee is only the starting line. Add app subscriptions, theme or headless development, and migration work when you model the true cost of the Shopify vs. Shopify Plus switch. Many teams find the apps Plus replaces soften the total, but the first-year spend is still higher.

App consolidation is the offset finance leads forget. Plus can replace paid apps for checkout, B2B, and automation, trimming your monthly software bill. Count those savings against the plan fee.

Watch the contract term, too. The lowest monthly rate assumes a 3-year commitment, so a shorter term costs more per month. Match the term to how confident you are in the move.

Recalculate the plan fee, app costs, and migration spend against your own order volume before you sign. Many merchants bring in a Shopify Plus agency to handle that migration rather than run it in-house. Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between Shopify and Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, adding lower transaction fees, full checkout customization, unlimited staff accounts, higher API limits, and dedicated support. Standard Shopify runs the same platform with tighter limits.

Is Shopify Plus Worth It?

Shopify Plus is worth it when quantified value from a required Plus capability, payment-fee difference, operating savings, or commercial gain exceeds the incremental platform and implementation cost. There is no reliable universal GMV threshold.

What Is the Difference Between Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus?

Shopify Advanced costs $399/mo (monthly) or $299/mo billed annually, with a 2.5% + 30¢ US online card rate, 0.6% third-party transaction fees and 15 staff accounts, while Plus costs $2,300/mo on a 3-year term with a 2.25% + 30¢ card rate, 0.2% fees and unlimited staff. Plus also adds advanced checkout app placement, enterprise organization controls, and 24/7 priority support. Confirm current service entitlements with Shopify during contracting.

What Are the Key Differences Between Shopify Basic and Plus?

Shopify Basic costs $29/mo on annual billing with a 2.9% + 30¢ US online card rate and a 2% third-party gateway fee. Shopify Plus costs $2,300/mo on a 3-year term with a 2.25% + 30¢ card rate, a 0.2% gateway fee, unlimited staff accounts, fully customizable checkout and 24/7 priority support.

How Do I Upgrade to Shopify Plus?

Sign up for Shopify Plus through Shopify's Plus page or contact Shopify Plus sales. Shopify says it upgrades an existing store within 24 business hours of signing up, and any variable platform fee is set in your quote, so model costs and pick a 1-year or 3-year term first.

How Much Does Shopify Plus Cost?

Shopify Plus costs $2,300/mo on a 3-year term or $2,500/mo on a 1-year term, plus a possible variable platform fee for higher-volume businesses. Shopify does not publish that fee's rate.

Does Shopify Plus Stop Chargebacks or Fraud?

No. Shopify offers fraud analysis and eligible Shopify Protect coverage on every plan, but neither guarantees an order or covers every chargeback, so fraud prevention stays largely on your team, and both chargebacks and fraud tend to rise as your order volume grows. You need dedicated tooling like Chargeflow to prevent disputes and recover lost revenue.

Are Shopify and Shopify Plus the Same Platform?

Yes, in the sense that matters most: Shopify and Shopify Plus run on the same core commerce platform and share the same admin, checkout, and app ecosystem. Shopify Plus is an enterprise pricing and feature tier layered on top, not separate software, which is why the upgrade decision comes down to fees, control, and support rather than switching platforms.
