The Core Difference: Who Owns the Commerce Responsibilities?

Document the merchant of record before comparing feature lists. That role determines the formal seller for the supported transaction and who carries indirect tax liability and the dispute response. With Paddle and Stripe Managed Payments, the merchant of record handles tax compliance and disputes for supported transactions. With Stripe Payments, Stripe is the payment processor and your business remains the seller: you carry tax compliance and the dispute response, using Stripe tools if you choose. Payment processing, subscription administration, customer service and refunds still need to be mapped to the selected product and agreement.

Paddle’s integrated approach can suit software teams seeking a coordinated merchant-of-record service. Stripe’s product options let teams evaluate either a configurable merchant-owned stack or a supported merchant-of-record arrangement. Both approaches can support growth when the responsibility map is clear.

Stripe Managed Payments vs Paddle

Stripe Managed Payments is a merchant-of-record offering for eligible digital products, including software and SaaS. Its documentation describes tax compliance, fraud prevention, dispute management, and transaction-level customer support. This makes it a distinct comparison with Paddle, rather than treating every Stripe implementation as a conventional processor arrangement.

Check the supported checkout flows and subscription configuration before choosing. Stripe documents these eligibility conditions: a direct integration (Connect platforms, Express accounts and platform-controlled accounts are excluded), a business in a supported location, fully automated digital products with an eligible tax code, Checkout Sessions or Payment Links rather than embedded Elements flows, and a low historical dispute rate. Existing subscriptions cannot be moved: Managed Payments applies to new subscriptions bought through a Managed Payments Checkout Session. Sources: Managed Payments overview and eligibility requirements.

Paddle vs Stripe Pricing: Match the Included Services

Paddle’s published pay-as-you-go rate is 5% + $0.50 per Checkout transaction, with custom pricing available. Per Paddle, it includes checkout, subscription management, tax compliance, fraud protection, chargeback and refund handling, and customer billing support. Stripe Payments publishes a US standard domestic-card rate of 2.9% + $0.30 online. Stripe Billing adds 0.7% of Billing volume on pay-as-you-go, and Stripe Managed Payments adds 3.5% per successful Managed Payments transaction on top of Payments fees. These rates cover different service scopes. Add the selected billing, tax, merchant-of-record, and other charges before comparing complete proposals. Sources: Paddle pricing and Stripe pricing.

For a $100 US domestic card transaction, the base formulas produce $5.50 for Paddle, $3.20 for Stripe Payments and $6.70 for Stripe Payments plus Managed Payments (2.9% + 3.5% + $0.30). This illustrative arithmetic excludes Billing, tax and disputes, so it does not compare equivalent bundles or establish total cost. The subscription example below adds them. Model both options against the same product, country, subscription, tax, refund, and support requirements.

Stripe Tax vs. o tratamento integrado de impostos do Paddle

Stripe Tax is a tax product; it does not by itself make Stripe the merchant of record. Evaluate the calculation, collection, registration, and filing services included in the chosen Tax plan. Stripe Managed Payments is the separate merchant-of-record route. Paddle includes tax services within its merchant-of-record model for supported sales.

Use Stripe Tax pricing and the provider proposals to document which services are included, which are separately charged, and which responsibilities remain with your team. This is more useful than comparing a tax percentage with an all-inclusive transaction rate.

Software Subscription Cost and Responsibility

This is an illustrative example, not a quote. Scope: a US-based software business selling a $50 monthly subscription (price before tax) to 1,000 US customers who pay with domestic cards, so $50,000 in monthly volume across 1,000 transactions. Assume 5 chargebacks in the month, all contested, with 2 won. Fees use US list prices from Paddle pricing, Stripe pricing and Stripe Tax pricing, checked October 4, 2026. Your negotiated rates, card mix and country will change the result.

Modeled monthly fees$3,100 (6.20% of volume)$2,470 (4.94% of volume)$3,925 (7.85% of volume)

The Stripe Payments total is lower on fees alone because it leaves work with your business that the other two arrangements take on: registering for and filing indirect taxes across jurisdictions, responding to disputes, and answering customer transaction questions. Price that work before comparing totals: record the owner and monthly hours for each task, multiply by your loaded hourly cost, and add it to the Stripe Payments column. Fee totals also exclude the disputed amounts themselves, refunded principal, and any tax Stripe Tax Complete or a registration service would add. The Managed Payments column assumes Billing at the listed rate; confirm that with Stripe for your account.

Eligibility and migration decide whether a column applies at all. Paddle needs a payment-method transfer and import for existing subscribers. Stripe Managed Payments covers new subscriptions only, so existing subscribers stay on Stripe Payments unless they re-subscribe through a Managed Payments Checkout Session.

Customer Example: Including Finance Work in the Business Case

Paddle’s Paired customer story describes a relationship app expanding into web subscriptions and adopting Paddle’s merchant-of-record service. The story reports 30 hours per month saved on tax and compliance work. That is a customer-reported operating result for Paired’s implementation.

Use this example to identify which finance tasks belong in your own business case. Compare Paddle with the actual Stripe configuration under consideration, including the distinction between Stripe Payments with selected services and Stripe Managed Payments. Paired’s historical implementation does not establish the capability or cost of every current Stripe configuration. No Paddle-plus-Chargeflow integration or recovery result is implied.

Como o Paddle e o Stripe tratam o disputas de maneiras diferentes

Fluxo de trabalho do Paddle Disputa

Paddle documents automated chargeback handling and the adjustments shown in the seller balance. Paddle gathers the evidence, and its documentation states that additional seller evidence is not required or accepted. The guidance lists a chargeback fee of 20 USD/GBP/EUR or 40 CAD/AUD, depending on transaction currency, and says the fee is not refunded when a dispute is won. It also asks sellers to keep chargebacks below 0.65% of monthly transaction volume. Follow the workflow for your Paddle product. Source: Paddle chargeback documentation.

Stripe Disputa Fluxo de trabalho

With Stripe Payments, your business is the merchant of record and responds through the Dashboard or API. In the US, Stripe lists $15 per dispute received and $15 per dispute countered; the countered fee is returned if you win. With Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe reviews each dispute, submits evidence on your behalf when it counters, and may accept disputes it expects to lose. The dispute received fee still applies to your account. Avoid assigning the same evidence-preparation responsibility to both arrangements. Sources: Stripe dispute response guidance and Managed Payments.

For each arrangement, identify the records that establish product delivery or service access, the response owner, and the reporting events your finance team receives. Our chargeback guide explains the underlying dispute lifecycle.

Verifique o Paddle e o Stripe comparando-os com um teste de prontidão do Disputa- primeiro

Follow a single transaction past authorization: where the order record ends up, how the payment ID connects back to the customer, when access is logged, how refunds stay reconciled, and who gets the dispute notification when one lands.

This surfaces costs pricing pages do not show: hours spent tracking down evidence, refund records that do not match, missed deadlines, or reporting spread across too many places.

As a hands-on test, take five anonymized disputes from your own history. Walk each provider through rebuilding the evidence packet, flag the response deadline, time how much manual effort it takes, and note where the outcome gets recorded.

Paddle ou Stripe: qual deles se encaixa melhor no seu modelo de negócios?

A software business can evaluate Paddle and Stripe using the same product eligibility, checkout, subscription, tax, support, and reporting requirements. Include representative plan changes, cancellations, refunds, and disputes in the demonstration. Match the operating model to the responsibilities your team wants to manage.

The current Chargeflow integration reference documents available connections; discuss the exact arrangement during implementation.

Paddle x Stripe: Perguntas frequentes

Is Paddle a Merchant of Record?

Paddle acts as merchant of record for supported transactions, providing payment, billing, tax, and chargeback services within the applicable product and agreement. Confirm the eligibility of your products and markets during onboarding.

Can Stripe Be a Merchant of Record?

Stripe can act as merchant of record through Stripe Managed Payments for supported transactions. With Stripe Payments and other conventional Stripe product arrangements, your business generally remains merchant of record. The selected product determines the responsibility map.

Is Paddle Cheaper Than Stripe?

It depends on service scope. In the US example above (1,000 domestic card subscriptions at $50, 5 chargebacks), modeled fees are $3,100 for Paddle, $2,470 for Stripe Payments with Billing and Tax Basic, and $3,925 for Stripe Managed Payments with Billing. Stripe Payments leaves tax filing, dispute response and support with your team. Compare complete arrangements, not base rates.

Who Is Eligible for Stripe Managed Payments?

Stripe decides access through an eligibility review. Your business must be in a supported location, use a direct integration (not Connect, Express or platform-controlled accounts), and sell fully automated digital products such as software or SaaS with an eligible tax code. Physical goods, professional services and live in-person events are not supported, and Checkout or Payment Links flows are required.

Can Existing Stripe Subscriptions Move to Managed Payments?

No. Stripe documents that Managed Payments applies to new subscriptions bought through a Managed Payments Checkout Session, and existing subscriptions are not eligible. Existing subscribers stay on your current Stripe arrangement unless they subscribe again.

How Do Subscriptions Migrate From Stripe to Paddle?

Paddle describes three parts: Stripe transfers customer payment details to Paddle's vault (typically about 2 weeks), you export subscriber data to a CSV, and Paddle imports and matches subscriptions on import day. Paddle reports a median migration of 12 days. The process starts after you integrate Paddle and send new customers to Paddle checkout.

Who Handles Chargeback Evidence?

Paddle gathers evidence for chargebacks itself and does not accept additional seller evidence. With Stripe Payments, your business responds through the Dashboard or API. With Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe counters on your behalf for eligible transactions. Confirm the actions requested for your product and case.

Does Stripe Tax Make Stripe the Merchant of Record?

No. Stripe Tax supports tax calculation and collection while your business remains the merchant of record and carries filing responsibility under Stripe Payments. Stripe Managed Payments is the separate merchant-of-record offering.

Choose the Commerce Responsibilities That Fit Your Team

Document who owns checkout, billing, tax, refunds, support, and dispute response. Then test those responsibilities against your own product and order history. Schedule a demo to map Chargeflow’s supported role within your selected payment arrangement.
