A BNPL comparison for merchants evaluates buy now, pay later providers by payment plans, merchant fees, settlement timing, integrations, refunds, and dispute handling. Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, and Sezzle each offer ways to add payment flexibility to your checkout. Match the approved product to your customers, basket sizes, markets, and operating workflow.

BNPL Product and Responsibility Reference

This reference is the shared baseline for the Chargeflow BNPL comparisons. Each row names a product, the market the cited source covers and who can use it. Shopper-side APR and late fees are listed separately from merchant fees, because the shopper pays interest or late fees to the lender while the merchant pays a discount or processing fee.

Four Terms Used Throughout This Guide

  • Repayment default: the shopper does not repay the BNPL provider. Sezzle documents that it covers repayment risk and pays merchants upfront, and Klarna documents that it pays merchants upfront and collects repayment. Confirm the treatment for your account in your merchant agreement.
  • Merchandise dispute: the shopper contests the goods or service, for example non-delivery or not as described, with the BNPL provider. The merchant answers in the provider portal within the deadline on the case.
  • Refund: the merchant returns money for a cancellation or return. A refund reduces the plan balance and is handled in the provider dashboard or API, separately from a dispute.
  • Card-funded dispute: a chargeback raised with the card issuer when a card funds the purchase, for example a virtual card in-store or a card used for a down payment. It follows card-network rules, not the BNPL provider workflow, and a shopper can still raise one in parallel.

Provider, Product, and Market Matrix

Product availability is market-specific and depends on merchant, shopper eligibility and integration. Plans with a legacy or limited status are not assumed to be available to every merchant. Sources were reviewed October 4, 2026.

Merchant Fees, Settlement, and Dispute Response

Compare when a payment is credited, when it is sent and when it reaches your bank. These are separate events. Fees below are merchant-side costs only; the APR and late fees in the matrix above are paid by shoppers. Figures are US-sourced where the provider documents a market, and are published examples, not a speed or price ranking.

Sezzle
Merchant fees (discount and processing; separate from shopper APR)
A set percentage of each order plus a small processing fee, assigned by Sezzle approval based on factors such as products sold and time in business. Merchants under $300 in order volume in a 30-day period pay a $15 monthly minimum. Source: Sezzle pricing
Settlement
Funds are credited to the Sezzle account when the order is placed. The most common settlement period to your bank is 3 business days; your application and dashboard specify the schedule. Settlement source
Merchant dispute response
Merchandise disputes are answered in the Disputes section of the Sezzle merchant dashboard: review the request, upload documents, message the dispute team, and issue a full or partial refund if appropriate. The help article states no deadline, so use the deadline on the case. Dispute source
Affirm
Merchant fees (discount and processing; separate from shopper APR)
Not published. Set per merchant during onboarding based on plan design, product mix and expected volume. A $15 dispute fee applies if the customer prevails in a dispute. Affirm business page
Settlement
US guidance describes bank receipt within 1 to 3 business days after ACH initiation. Capture, disbursement flow and a positive settlement balance affect timing. Settlement source
Merchant dispute response
The merchant is notified by email and responds in the Merchant Portal Disputes Dashboard, typically within 15 days of notification. The case page shows the actual deadline. Dispute source
Afterpay
Merchant fees (discount and processing; separate from shopper APR)
US merchant pages do not publish a flat merchant rate. Confirm the fee, including channel-specific terms, in your merchant agreement.
Settlement
US merchant guide describes online settlement within days. In-store funds settle through the card processor or acquiring partner, in 1 to 5 business days depending on the agreement. Settlement source
Merchant dispute response
The documented non-delivery dispute flow allows 13 days for merchant evidence in the Business Hub or through the Disputes API. Customers can raise disputes from 7 to 120 days after capture. Dispute source
Klarna
Merchant fees (discount and processing; separate from shopper APR)
A fixed fee plus a percentage per capture, taken from your price plan and not published publicly. Inputs include issuing, customer and merchant country and merchant category code. Klarna pricing overview
Settlement
Klarna pays the merchant upfront and in full and collects repayment from the shopper. Record the payout schedule, capture rules and settlement delay agreed for your account and integration.
Merchant dispute response
The linked acquiring-partner V4 lifecycle uses a case-specific expires_at deadline that varies by reason. Confirm the lifecycle supported by your integration. Dispute source

These timelines cover different starting points and workflows. Use them to configure finance and support ownership, then confirm the exact process in your merchant agreement. A provider-managed customer dispute and a card-funded chargeback can follow different paths, so keep one case record per path.

Compare BNPL Merchant Fees

BNPL merchant fees depend on the provider, product, market, transaction mix, and commercial agreement. Ask each provider or payment partner to price the same order sample. Record the fee schedule for your actual integration, including whether BNPL is contracted directly or delivered through a PSP.

Compare quotes with the same method.

  1. Fix the market and named payment program

Compare only the same market and the same named BNPL product or program. Shopper APR and late fees stay separate from merchant fees.

  2. Use the same order and return sample

Give each provider or payment partner the same order sample, including your normal return mix.

  3. Apply each actual merchant quote

Record the fee schedule for your actual integration, whether BNPL is contracted directly or delivered through a PSP.

  4. Include refund, dispute, and integration costs

Add refund treatment, dispute case fees and staff time, and implementation and reconciliation costs from the table below.

  5. Compare contribution margin and workflow

Compare contribution margin and the operating workflow, keeping account credit, settlement initiation and bank arrival separate.

Inputs for a comparable BNPL merchant cost model

Transaction fees
What to Record
Percentage, fixed amount, currency, and eligible payment program.
How to Use It
Calculate fees separately for each basket-size and product segment.
Reembolsos
What to Record
Full and partial refund treatment, fee treatment, and settlement adjustments.
How to Use It
Model your normal return mix using the contract terms.
Disputa operações
What to Record
Applicable case fees, evidence handling, and outcome accounting.
How to Use It
Include both fees and staff time in the operating model.
Integration and reporting
What to Record
Implementation, platform or PSP charges, and reconciliation work.
How to Use It
Allocate setup costs across the period you are evaluating.
Incremental sales
What to Record
Completed orders, net sales after returns, and contribution margin.
How to Use It
Measure changes against a comparable baseline with the same traffic mix.

Worked Example: Translate a BNPL Quote Into Margin

Illustrative example, not a provider quote: Assume 1,000 BNPL orders per month, a $100 average order value, and an agreed fee of 4% + $0.30 per order. Transaction fees would be $4,300: ($100,000 × 4%) + (1,000 × $0.30).

If your measured reconciliation and dispute workload is ten hours at a loaded labor cost of $30 per hour, add $300. The combined amount is $4,600 before returns, other contractual fees, integration costs, and any incremental profit generated by the payment option. Apply the same calculation to each proposal and use your own figures.

Match BNPL to Your Merchant Use Case

  • Higher-value baskets: evaluate the approved monthly financing options, customer disclosures, capture timing, and return workflow. Affirm, Klarna and Sezzle describe longer-term options, and Afterpay offers Pay Monthly in the US; availability is product- and market-specific, as the matrix above shows.
  • Online and in-store retail: compare how each proposed implementation links orders, payment references, receipts, refunds, and daily settlements across channels.
  • International growth: build a country-by-country record of eligible merchant entities, shopper markets, currencies, payment programs, and settlement accounts. Keep marketing aligned with the programs actually offered in each checkout.
  • Platform-led launch: confirm the exact plugin, PSP connection, or API path. Test one completed order, partial refund, full refund, and dispute notification before rollout.

For the wider checkout architecture, use the payment gateway and PSP comparison. If you are also selecting a storefront, use the ecommerce platform comparison to map order data and integration requirements.

Build a BNPL Reporting and Evidence Workflow

A useful BNPL reconciliation record connects the ecommerce order, provider order, capture, settlement, refund, and dispute. Store those references together so finance and support can follow one purchase through its complete lifecycle.

  • Record the provider and ecommerce order IDs at checkout, then attach capture and settlement references.
  • Preserve the product description, promised delivery date, applicable policies, and customer communications.
  • Match tracking, delivery, collection, or service-completion records to the order.
  • Record every full or partial refund, including its amount, date, and provider reference.
  • Assign an owner to each case, capture the response deadline, and reconcile the final outcome to finance records.

A practical evaluation: select five anonymized historical orders covering delivery, product, cancellation, refund, and billing questions. Ask each shortlisted provider or implementation partner to demonstrate how the relevant information is retrieved. Record minutes spent, records found, manual steps, and case status visibility. This produces evidence about your own workflow without turning unrelated merchant outcomes into a provider ranking.

Route the Case Before Selecting the Deadline

BNPL case routes: records to join and response ownership

The merchant’s assigned owner supplies the requested evidence.Records and deadlineJoin provider order/capture and case IDs to storefront order, promised delivery and tracking. Partial return or refundRoute and ownerRecord the return and provider refund before assessing any related dispute. A partial return is not itself a card chargeback.Records and deadlineJoin item, order, captured amount, refund amount/date/reference and case if one exists. Reconcile the remaining principal.

Do not assume it is a direct chargeback to the merchant.Records and deadlineKeep issuer case, processor/payment reference and any provider order join. The notice recipient follows the card-case response deadline.

Assign one owner per route; link related cases without merging deadlines.
Provider-managed cases: documented response channels
Provider and scopeChannel and deadline source
Klarna, acquirer V4 integrationChannel and deadline sourceUse the integration’s dispute details and expires_at for evidence. An appeal has a separate arbitration_expires_at. Confirm V4 applies to your configuration.
Afterpay, documented online product-not-received workflowChannel and deadline sourceRespond through the Business Hub or API. The documented merchant evidence window is 13 days after notification; follow the actual case notice.
Affirm, US merchant dispute processChannel and deadline sourceFollow email instructions and the merchant case. The notice gives the response deadline; card-network processes can differ.
Sezzle, merchant dispute workflowChannel and deadline sourceUse Merchant Dashboard → Disputes → Manage Dispute. Read the requested information and timing on the case; keep refunds tied to that order.

Connect Your BNPL Workflow With Chargeflow

Chargeflow’s current integration documentation lists Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, and Sezzle as available connections. The documentation distinguishes connections that bring in disputes from ecommerce and subscription connections that enrich evidence. Confirm the supported case types, account configuration, and data flow for your implementation.

Chargeflow complements the payment flexibility these partners provide with specialized dispute operations across supported connections. Once your BNPL shortlist is ready, schedule a demo to map your providers, order data, and evidence workflow.

BNPL Questions From Merchants

Which BNPL Provider Should a Merchant Choose?

Choose a BNPL provider by matching its approved payment programs, shopper markets, merchant economics, and operating workflow to your business. Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, and Sezzle each support payment flexibility. Compare the actual configuration available to your business, then test checkout, refunds, reconciliation, and evidence access with representative orders.

How Do BNPL Merchant Fees Compare?

Compare BNPL merchant fees using the same order volume, basket sizes, markets, and return assumptions. Request the percentage and fixed transaction fees, refund treatment, dispute fees, settlement terms, and integration costs for each proposal. The fee for one product or PSP integration should not be treated as the provider’s universal price.

Does Upfront BNPL Payment Mean Same-Day Bank Settlement?

Upfront BNPL payment means the merchant can receive funds before the shopper completes the installments. Bank arrival follows the provider’s settlement process and your agreement. For example, Sezzle distinguishes immediate credit to the Sezzle account from the later settlement to your bank, which most commonly takes 3 business days. Track those events separately in your cash-flow model.

How Can Merchants Compare BNPL Reporting and Reconciliation?

Compare BNPL reporting by tracing the same order through capture, settlement, a partial refund, and a dispute. Check whether the provider order ID remains connected to the ecommerce order, payout, adjustment, and final outcome. Record the manual steps and time needed to complete each task with your actual systems.

Can a Merchant Offer Multiple BNPL Providers?

A merchant can evaluate multiple BNPL providers where the providers approve the business and the checkout supports them. Define the shopper, market, or basket segment each option serves, then measure completed orders and contribution margin alongside reconciliation and support effort. Keep the payment choices clear and track each provider separately.

Can Customers Dispute BNPL Purchases?

Customers can raise merchandise disputes through BNPL providers, and can also dispute a card-funded payment with their card issuer. The reason, response channel, evidence deadline, and resolution process depend on the provider and product. Use the case-specific instructions and keep order, delivery, policy, refund, and customer-service records connected to the payment reference.

Launch BNPL With a Clear Operating Plan

  • Match approved payment programs to customer and market needs.
  • Compare proposals with the same order mix and cost assumptions.
  • Document settlement events and case-specific response deadlines.
  • Test refunds, reporting, and evidence access before expanding the rollout.

How This Comparison Was Prepared

Chargeflow Experts reviewed the linked provider documentation on October 4, 2026. This BNPL comparison compares documented capabilities and operating models. The providers featured are Chargeflow partners. Provider descriptions explain business fit; they are not a performance ranking. Availability and commercial terms depend on your market, product, plan, and agreement.

Worked examples are illustrative calculations. The evaluation exercises are practical methods you can run with your own data; they are not claims that Chargeflow conducted a controlled test of the providers. Source links appear beside the facts they support.
