TL;DR:
- A Sezzle merchant dispute is a Sezzle-mediated case answered in the Disputes tab of the merchant dashboard, not a card chargeback.
- Shoppers have 90 days from purchase to file, and Sezzle reviews new cases in about 2-3 business days.
- Sezzle most often asks for tracking that shows movement, an RMA number or a refund; a label-created status does not count.
- Refund from the dispute window as if the shopper paid in full, since Sezzle adjusts the installments and cannot reverse a processing refund.
- A funded Refund Reserve avoids card-on-file refund fees and the account freeze that follows a negative balance.
A Sezzle merchant dispute is a case Sezzle opens when a shopper reports an order problem, like a missing package or the wrong item. Sezzle mediates the case, and you answer Sezzle in the Disputes tab of your merchant dashboard.
- Where it lives: Disputes, then Manage Dispute, then View Conversation.
- What Sezzle asks for most: tracking that shows movement, an RMA number or a refund.
- Shopper filing window: 90 days from purchase.
- Your goal: answer the exact request with records from the exact order.
A generic card chargeback letter misses the question Sezzle asked. This guide shows you how to read the case, match it to the order, send the right records and settle refunds without paying twice.

How Sezzle Merchant Disputes Work
Three conversations run at once in a Sezzle order. Keep them apart, because only one of them answers the dispute.
| Conversation | Who talks | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Shopper and merchant | Your customer and your support team | Product questions, returns, exchanges and order fixes |
| Merchant and Sezzle case | Your dispute owner and Sezzle's disputes team | The shopper's complaint, Sezzle's request and your response |
| Shopper and Sezzle | Your customer and Sezzle support | Installments, payment dates and account questions |
Sezzle's merchant dispute instructions (updated April 1, 2026) say the case shows the shopper's reason in their own words. The conversation view shows what Sezzle needs. Your replies in that portal go to Sezzle's disputes team, and Sezzle may ask for more information.
A support email to the shopper does not reach the Sezzle reviewer. If you settle the issue with the customer, record it in the case too.
Sezzle Dispute Timeline and Rules
Sezzle publishes its dispute rules in two places: the merchant help center and the shopper help center. Read both, because the shopper side sets the clock.
90 days Shopper window to file a dispute after purchase | 2-3 business days Sezzle's first review of a new shopper dispute |
Up to 10 business days For a refund to reach the shopper after Sezzle confirms it | More than 13% Share of BNPL transactions with a return or dispute (CFPB) |
Sources: Sezzle's How do disputes work? and refund timing articles, and the CFPB's May 2024 BNPL release. The CFPB figure comes from 2021 data, when shoppers returned or disputed $1.8 billion at the five lenders it surveyed. See more BNPL statistics for current market data.
| Rule | What Sezzle says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Shopper contacts you first | Sezzle asks shoppers to work with the merchant before filing. | Fast, logged support replies stop many cases before they open. |
| What shoppers can dispute | Wrong item, no shipment past the processing window, or shipping to a different address than checkout. | Your evidence must answer one of these claims. |
| What shoppers cannot dispute | Changed mind, a package stolen from the doorstep, or a needed address change. | Delivered tracking matters, since doorstep theft is outside Sezzle's dispute scope. |
| Merchant response deadline | No fixed number of days is published in Sezzle's merchant help center. | Reply as soon as the case opens and watch for follow-up requests. |
| Dispute fee | Sezzle's merchant fee page lists no dispute or chargeback fee. | Your cost is the refund, any card-on-file refund fee and staff time. |
Why Sezzle Closes a Dispute
Sezzle's shopper help center lists four reasons a dispute closes. Each one points to a record you control.
| Close reason | Your action |
|---|---|
| No evidence you sent the wrong item or failed to ship | Send tracking that shows movement and the itemized order. |
| You issued a full or partial refund | Refund from the case window so Sezzle ties it to the right order. |
| The shopper filed inside your posted turnaround time | Publish clear processing times on your site and keep them current. |
| The shopper filed 90 or more days after the order | Note the order date in your reply when the case is late. |
The turnaround rule rewards clear policies. If your site says "ships in 5 business days," a case filed on day 3 can close without a fight.
Respond to a Sezzle Dispute Step by Step
Follow the same order every time. It keeps your reply tied to the live request.
- Open the case. Log in to the Sezzle merchant dashboard and select Disputes.
- Read the claim. Select Manage Dispute to see the shopper's reason.
- Read the request. Select View Conversation to see what Sezzle needs.
- Match the order. Link the case to the store order, items, shipments and refunds.
- Reply in the portal. Answer the request and upload supporting files there.
- Refund from the case if you agree. Use the full or partial refund option in the dispute window.
- Watch for follow-ups. Assign one owner to check the case until it closes.
Use Chargeflow's evidence source map to assign order, warehouse, support and payment records to named owners before a case arrives.
Match the Sezzle Case to the Store Order
Connect the case to the store order, the captured amount, the affected items, each shipment and any refund. A name or email match can pick the wrong order when a shopper buys from you more than once.
Build a short working index before you collect screenshots. The labels below describe business records, not Sezzle API fields.
| Working field | Record to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Case and request | The dispute conversation and status | Shows the claim and what Sezzle asked for |
| Store order | Itemized order and original confirmation | Shows which products and prices are in the case |
| Sezzle reference | The Sezzle order linked to your store order | Keeps evidence from another order out of the file |
| Fulfillment or return | Shipment, parcel contents, receipt or RMA | Ties the affected items to physical events |
| Refund | Refund status in Sezzle, not only in your store | Separates a promise from a completed refund |
| Submission history | Replies, files and later requests | Shows what the reviewer actually received |
If two systems disagree, name the gap. "Fulfilled" in your store can mean a label was printed, a parcel was handed to a carrier or a parcel was delivered. Describe only the event your records prove.
Evidence Sezzle Asks For, by Claim Type
Sezzle's merchant guide names three common requests: tracking that shows the parcel moved, an RMA number and a refund. Sezzle states that label-created or pre-shipment status is not enough.
| Shopper claim | What Sezzle usually needs | Records that answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Order not received | Tracking with carrier movement | Carrier scans, delivery confirmation, parcel contents for split shipments |
| Wrong or different item | Proof of what shipped, or a fix | Pick list, packing photo, SKU on the invoice, exchange or refund record |
| Return not credited | RMA number and return status | RMA, return tracking, warehouse receipt, refund record in Sezzle |
| Shipped to the wrong address | Address match | Checkout address, label address and carrier delivery address |
The proof standard is close to a card item not received chargeback, but the reviewer is Sezzle, not an issuing bank. Strong delivery confirmation wins both. For quality claims, the evidence logic from an item not as described case still applies.
For split shipments, list what each parcel held. A delivered accessory does not prove the coat arrived.
Worked Example: Label Created, Shipment Not Verified
Hypothetical example. Order SZ-810 holds a $90 coat. The shopper opens a Sezzle dispute for nonreceipt. Your store shows "fulfilled," but the carrier shows only "label created." The warehouse cannot find a handoff scan.
- Store says fulfilled. Find out which event set that status.
- Carrier says label created. Sezzle does not accept this as proof of shipment.
- Handoff scan missing. Ask the warehouse for the record and keep the gap in your notes.
- Reply with facts. Tell Sezzle what you know, what you are checking and what you will do.
A sample reply: "This case concerns the $90 coat on SZ-810. Our system marked the order fulfilled when the label printed. The carrier has no movement scan yet. We are checking the warehouse handoff and have attached the order and our customer messages."
If the warehouse finds the scan, upload it through the case. If it does not, refund from the dispute window or ship a replacement. Never present a label as proof of delivery.

Refunds During a Sezzle Dispute
Refunding from the dispute window ties the money to the right order. Sezzle's return and change guide sets three rules for every Sezzle refund:
- Refund as if the shopper paid in full. Sezzle adjusts the installment plan. Do not base the amount on how many installments the shopper has paid.
- Refund only through Sezzle. Never refund in cash, PayPal or Venmo, since you lose the record.
- Check before you click. Sezzle cannot reverse or change a refund once it starts processing.
Sezzle pulls the refund from your funds in a fixed order, per its refund handling article:
- Refund Reserves (no fee)
- Interest Account
- Payouts
- Card on file (a fee applies)
- Bank account, only if the card fails or for some cross-border cases
A Refund Reserve is money held back from your payouts to cover refunds and disputes. Sezzle suggests a reserve equal to about 3 days of Sezzle volume. Without one, refunds hit your card on file and carry a fee.
Two refunds for one problem are a common loss. Check the Sezzle refund status before support sends a second payment, and read how a double refund happens. If a shopper also opens a bank dispute later, see what to do with a chargeback after a refund.
Hypothetical example. A $200 order holds a $60 returned item and $140 of kept goods. You refund $60 from the case. Sezzle, not your store, recalculates the shopper's remaining installments.
Sezzle Dispute vs Card Chargeback
A Sezzle dispute is not a card chargeback. Sezzle cases follow Sezzle's own process. A card chargeback runs through the shopper's bank and the card network. Start with the chargeback meaning if your team is new to card disputes.
| Route | Who reviews it | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Sezzle order dispute | Sezzle's disputes team | Disputes tab in your Sezzle merchant dashboard |
| Shopper's bank chargeback on a Sezzle installment | The shopper's bank, against the Sezzle installment charge | Marked Chargeback on that installment in the shopper's Sezzle account |
| Sezzle virtual card order at a store without a Sezzle integration | Your card processor's dispute process | Your processor's dispute queue, not a Sezzle merchant case |
Sezzle's shopper help center explains that a shopper can charge back an installment with their bank. That process can take weeks to months, and the shopper cannot place new Sezzle orders until it resolves. Keep your order evidence ready, because the complaint behind it is usually the same.
Virtual card orders are different. Sezzle tells shoppers to give the merchant the last 4 digits of the virtual card, because your system has no record of the Sezzle order number. Treat those orders like any other card payment.
Federal rules do not set Sezzle's merchant process. The CFPB's 2024 interpretive rule treated BNPL lenders like card issuers for billing disputes, including a payment pause during an investigation. The CFPB withdrew that rule in May 2025, so Sezzle's own terms and help center remain your guide.
Some "not received" claims come from shoppers who did get the parcel. Flag repeat patterns as possible friendly fraud and keep the evidence for the next case.
Reconcile the Outcome and Protect Your Payouts
Match the closed case to the money. Check the refund in Sezzle's Refunds tab, the payout it came from and the final case status. Keep the purchase amount, refunds and fees in separate lines.
Watch your balance. Sezzle's payout guide says it freezes a merchant account with a negative balance, which can happen when a refund runs while your reserve is empty. Its fee page also lists a $15 monthly fee for merchants under $300 in Sezzle volume in 30 days.
Chargeflow's guide to chargeback reconciliation gives the general matching framework. Do not copy another provider's settlement rules to Sezzle. Provider reports follow different formats.
Prevent Repeat Sezzle Disputes
Most Sezzle cases trace back to a missing record. Fix the record, and the next case gets shorter.
- Post processing times. Sezzle closes disputes filed inside your posted turnaround time. Put the time on product and policy pages.
- Mark orders shipped only on a carrier scan. A printed label is not a shipment.
- Issue RMA numbers for every return. Sezzle asks for them by name.
- Tighten your returns page. These steps help you improve your return policy.
- Track repeat claimants. Repeat "not received" or "wrong item" claims can signal refund abuse or BNPL fraud.
Measure on-time replies, cases missing an order reference and time spent waiting on warehouse records. Segment by claim type, since one overall rate hides weak spots.
Run Sezzle and card disputes in one place. Chargeflow's Sezzle integration puts Sezzle cases next to your card chargebacks, gathers order, shipping and support records and tracks every response deadline. Still choosing a provider? Compare dispute handling in Sezzle vs Klarna and Sezzle vs Affirm.

Sezzle Dispute FAQs
Can a shopper dispute a Sezzle payment?
Yes. A Sezzle shopper can open a dispute within 90 days of purchase if the merchant sent the wrong item, did not ship past its processing window or shipped to a different address. Sezzle asks the shopper to contact the merchant first, then mediates with the merchant through the merchant dashboard.
How long do Sezzle disputes take?
Sezzle reviews a new shopper dispute in about 2-3 business days, then updates the shopper on next steps. The full case takes longer if Sezzle needs more information from the merchant. Sezzle's merchant help center publishes no fixed response deadline, so merchants should reply as soon as the case opens.
How long does Sezzle take to refund a shopper?
A Sezzle refund can take up to 10 business days to reach the shopper after Sezzle sends its refund confirmation email. Sezzle keeps collecting installments until it receives the merchant's funds. Shopper fees are non-refundable, and a refund cannot be changed once it starts processing.
Does Sezzle charge merchants a dispute fee?
Sezzle's merchant fee page lists no dispute or chargeback fee. Merchants pay a percentage of each order plus a processing fee, a $15 monthly fee below $300 in 30-day volume and a fee on refunds charged to the card on file. A funded Refund Reserve avoids that refund fee.
Is a Sezzle dispute the same as a chargeback?
No. A Sezzle dispute is reviewed by Sezzle's disputes team and answered in the Sezzle merchant dashboard. A chargeback runs through the shopper's bank and card network. A shopper can still charge back a Sezzle installment with their bank, which blocks new Sezzle orders until it resolves.
Sources checked October 25, 2026, against Sezzle's merchant and shopper help centers. The order numbers and amounts in the examples are hypothetical.
