TL;DR:
- A reason code describes an allegation, not proven customer or merchant misconduct.
- Check the network, subtype, payment environment and applicable defense.
- Match records to the complaint and convert recurring issues into prevention tasks.
A fraud-related chargeback reason code describes the reported dispute condition. It does not establish that the merchant was negligent or that the customer is dishonest. Read the network, code, subtype and transaction context before deciding which records can answer the allegation.
Use the Full chargeback prevention framework for the wider prevention process. This guide explains how to route fraud-related cases and build a useful evidence record.
Use the Code to Route the Allegation
Keep three questions separate: did the issuer approve the payment, did the cardholder authorize or participate in it, and does a specific liability-shift or other defense apply? An approval result is not a complete answer to the other questions.
Create a case record containing the actual code and subtype, card-present or card-absent environment, authentication results, disputed amount, deadline and response route. Ask the processor to clarify an ambiguous label before selecting a defense.
Network Examples and the Questions They Raise
| Network example | Reported condition | Merchant review focus |
|---|---|---|
| Visa 10.4 | Other Fraud – Card-Absent Environment | Review the participation allegation and applicable card-absent evidence or remedy. |
| Visa 10.1 | EMV Liability Shift Counterfeit Fraud | Review the card-present acceptance environment and relevant EMV records; do not treat it as the online-fraud condition. |
| Mastercard 4837/37 | No Cardholder Authorization | Review the reported authorization or participation complaint and applicable transaction-specific rules. |
| American Express F29 | Card Not Present | Use the American Express requirements for the actual transaction and evidence route. |
These examples are not interchangeable defense templates. Other fraud and program-related conditions can apply, and regional or transaction-specific rules matter. For Discover or any unlisted code, use the current notice and processor requirements rather than inferring the defense from another network.

Prepare Evidence Without Making Unsupported Assumptions
- Read the actual allegation. Summarize the reported complaint and identify the transaction environment.
- Collect the transaction record. Preserve payment, order, account and authentication identifiers and event times.
- Review any special defense. Confirm eligibility with the processor before relying on a liability shift or qualifying prior-payment remedy.
- Explain the records. Identify what each attachment demonstrates and what it cannot establish.
- Confirm submission. Follow the current route and deadline, and retain the packet and confirmation.
Shipping evidence can establish fulfillment, while authentication and account activity answer different participation questions. AVS or CVV matches are useful signals; do not describe a match alone as proof that the cardholder authorized the purchase.
Turn Case Patterns Into Specific Prevention Tasks
Group cases by network, condition, payment environment and order cohort. Record the specific root cause found during review instead of classifying every loss as friendly fraud.
- Repeated account-access issues: investigate authentication and customer-account controls.
- Repeated delivery complaints: review fulfillment and customer communication.
- Repeated cancellation or refund conflicts: review billing and resolution processes.
- Repeated card-present acceptance issues: review device configuration and staff procedures.
Monitor the applicable Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) and processor requirements separately from recovery results. Ask the acquirer which events and denominators apply to your account.
Build a Repeatable Fraud-Dispute Review
A useful reason-code workflow connects the allegation to the right source records and the actual response route. It gives the reviewer a factual explanation and gives operations a concrete task after the case closes.
Keep evidence collection, prevention actions and financial outcomes visible as separate parts of chargeback management.
